So far - you have an extra hour in the day, to either sleep, cook, or shop! Here are some time saving tips you could do the next time you grocery shop!
- Keep inventory: When you run out of something, don't leave it to your memory. Jot it down immediately for your next grocery trip.
- Always go with a list and stick to your list: Prepare a list of everything you need and check to make sure you don't have it in your pantry, fridge or freezer. Then stick to that list so you can avoid impulse buys. Even if it's just a couple dollars, they will add up each trip.
- Plan out a weekly menu: This is the best way to ensure that your list is complete so, you are not at the grocery store wondering what you need to buy for the week just to cook.
- Cut back on your "one-item" trips and plan one big trip a month for bulk staples: One-item trips waste gas and time. If you plan ahead, make a weekly menu, and shop with a list, this should drastically reduce the number of trips you make for a small number of items. Be sure to stock up on the things you frequently go out for in order to avoid buying impulse items.
- Prepare your grocery list by aisle: In your regular grocery store, ask customer service for an aisle map so you can easily find and check off items as you walk down the aisle. This saves you time from constantly running back and forth in the store.
- Go for organic and natural foods!: Junk food costs a lot of money for about zero nutrition. So, look for things in their least processed form. You should be avoiding items with trans fat, hydrogenated oils, high amounts of sugar, saturated fat, lots of sodium and cholesterol. Instead, opt to buy items with fiber, good fats, protein, vitamins, and calcium.
- Shop during slow times: Shop during working hours or other non-peak times, it will make shopping much faster with less people in the store. So, be sure to avoid going to the grocery store right after 5 p.m., on paydays, and near major holidays.

Daylight Savings Time
To those that observe Daylight Savings Time, it is time to rewind those clocks! Did you know that the United States did not start observing DST until March 31, 1918? Germany and all around Europe incorporated DST to conserve fuel during World War I. After World War I, United States began to use DST to conserve their fuel as well. But even then, DST was not mandated throughout the United States until 1967 when the transportation industry pushed for federal regulation. This push created the Uniform Time Act of 1966 causing standard time to be mandated with the established times zones. So clocks would be advanced one hour beginning at 2:00 a.m. on the last Sunday in April and turned back one hour at 2:00 a.m. on the last Sunday in October. It was not until the Energy Policy Act of 2005 that DST was extended. So from 2007 until now, DST begins on the second Sunday of March and ends the first Sunday of November. This is why clocks "Spring" forward in the spring and "Fall" back in the fall!
