Our Turn to Speak at Last:

Stories of Living with Schizophrenia

Presenter:   Tracy McDonough, PhD, Associate Professor

 and Lynda Crane, PhD, Professor

College of Mount St. Joseph

Monday, November 18, 2013  *  7:30 PM

Union Township Civic Center

Queen City Room A (Lower Level)

4350 Aicholtz Road

Cincinnati, OH 45245

Historically, there is no group more stigmatized and unheard than persons living with schizophrenia. Most of the literature concerning schizophrenia is written about-and not by-those with the condition.   In this talk, we will present digital audio excerpts in which narrators with Schizophrenia discuss their own insight into their condition, and their very creative and often effective strategies for managing their symptoms. For our narrators (diagnosed with schizophrenia, but currently stable) these interviews marked the first time they had been asked to talk about their lives, and they expressed an often profound and emotional relief at being able to speak out loud. These excerpts will be accompanied by pictures narrators chose as representative of something important in their lives.

In addition, over the last year, we have presented excerpts from narrators' stories to community mental health agencies and advocacy groups, and recorded their reactions. At the conclusion of the presentation, we will be asking audience members to contribute to this dialogue by sharing their reactions to the presentation and messages to our narrators as well.

Tracy McDonough, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist and Associate Professor at the College of Mount St. Joseph. She got her Bachelor's degree at Miami University in Oxford and her Master's and Doctorate degrees at Bowling Green State University. In 2006, Dr. McDonough won the Clifford Award for Excellence in Teaching as well as Ohio Magazine's Excellence in Education Award. Dr. McDonough's current passion involves collecting life histories (with Dr. Crane) of individuals with schizophrenia and sharing those stories to promote public understanding.

Lynda Crane, PhD is a Professor of Psychology at the College of Mount St. Joseph. She earned her PhD from the University of Maryland and was a post-doctoral Fellow at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, in Baltimore, MD. She has held research positions at the Wright State University School of Medicine (Fels Institute) and at the National Institute of Mental Health, under Dr. Stanley Greenspan.

Reality Therapy:

Using the WDEP System

Presenter:   Robert Wubbolding Ed D

Monday, December 16, 2013  *  7:30 PM

Union Township Civic Center

Queen City Room A (Lower Level)

4350 Aicholtz Road

Cincinnati, OH 45245

Robert Wubbolding will describe the WDEP system of reality therapy.  Reality therapy helps clients learn to be more aware of their choices and how these choices may be inefficient in achieving their goals. Reality therapy is structured around the WDEP system (wants, doing, evaluation, and planning). He will describe and illustrate the art of asking questions. This skill is an alternative to the use of less effective but conventional ways of handling human choices. He will offer ways to change your behavior and show how these skills can be used by families, parents, siblings and children.

The goals for this presentation include: (1) gain practical ideas immediately useful, (2) help family members and others evaluate their own behavior, (3) assist others to make specific, attainable plans, (4) learn five human motivators for all behaviors.

Robert E. Wubbolding, EdD

Author of 11 books including Reality Therapy for the 21st Century and Reality Therapy: Theories of Psychotherapy Series (APA). Director of the Center for Reality Therapy in Cincinnati, Ohio; Director of Training for The William Glasser Institute (1988 - 2011), professor of counseling emeritus at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Wubbolding has served as consultant to the drug and alcohol abuse programs for the US Army and Air Force. He was a group counselor at a halfway house for women and has been an elementary and secondary school counselor, a high school teacher, as well as a teacher of adult basic education.
