Art Therapy: What is it and does it really help

Art therapy is led by a qualified therapist, and does not require the participant to have previous experience or artistic talent. The aim is to help people express themselves, and to develop self-awareness and insight. The underlying assumption is that creative processes encourage self-expression, promote self-awareness and increase insight, thereby enhancing a person's psychological well-being.

In an art therapy session, patients are encouraged to use a range of art materials to make images and the focus is on the relation between the image, the creator and the therapist. Art therapy encourages creativity. A therapist will encourage the person to express themselves by creating something and will help make sense of what has been created in relation to the patient's experience and state of mind.

Learn more about Art Therapy and create your own unique work of art. Discover how this unique therapy can help maintain mental wellness.

Janet Kempf, ATR-BC is a nationally Registered Board Certified Art Therapist who has been practicing in the field since 2001.  Early in her career,  worked with children and adolescents with mental illness in residential, day treatment and after school settings.  Presently, Janet is working at Good Samaritan Hospital on the Adult Behavioral Unit where she runs over 15 groups a week.  She also is employed part time at Marjorie P. Lee Retirement Community where she holds group and individual art experiences with the elderly residents.  Last year, Janet testified at the Capitol in Columbus to advocate for Art Therapy Licensure in the State of Ohio.

Meera Rastogi is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Cincinnati Clermont College. She earned her Ph.D. from Ohio State University's Counseling Psychology Program in 2001 and is currently working on a second master's degree, in art therapy, at Saint Mary of the Woods College.  Her specialties include psychopathology, multicultural psychology, and the intersections among art and psychology.  Dr. Rastogi previously received tenure and the 2006 Faculty Advisor of the Year Award from Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin.  In addition to teaching and advising, Dr. Rastogi hopes to one day open a small practice.
