CARING & SHARING SUPPORT GROUP  *  6:30 p.m.

ALL ARE WELCOME !

Paul Komarek talks about what happens if we move the "medical" part of mental illness to the background, and let family life, friendship, community values and a person's core strengths and aspirations move to the center of the "picture."

Paul Komarek is the author of Defying Mental Illness. His book is a plain-language guide to recovery from mental illness. Its strengths-based approach makes mental health disorders and treatment understandable. Areas covered include: schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, autism, suicide prevention, childhood mental illness and more. It is suitable for community outreach work and as a basic textbook.

Paul Komarek is an author and consultant with a comeback story. After bipolar disorder wiped out his legal career, Paul rebuilt his life around his strengths as a writer, teacher and policy expert. He works on tough social issues, including criminal justice reform, education of children with disabilities, violence prevention, addiction treatment, health care for the poor, prisoner reentry, and the criminalization of people with mental illness. He is an adjunct faculty member at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. He served as president of NAMI Hamilton County and a board member of NAMI Ohio. He developed NAMI Ohio's training for jail and court personnel, worked on its Guardianship Initiative, and wrote You Are Not Alone, a guide for people with mental illness and their family members. Paul helped develop NAMI Clermont County's first website.
