He lives!

He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me and talks with me
along life's narrow way.
He lives, He lives, Salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know He lives?
He lives within my heart.

This Alfred H. Ackley hymn "I Serve A Risen Savior" is one of my favorites to sing. Hearing or singing it transforms me back to when I stood with my family on Easter morning so many years ago. It fills me with joy. First, the tempo is lively and makes me happy. More so, the words give me hope.

The commercialization of Easter invokes images of colorful eggs, chocolate bunnies, baskets filled with "grass," and baby chicks. In fact a quick Google search of "Easter images" turned up within the first 125+ images only four that were in any way Christian. And only two of the four included a cross.

I'm not a curmudgeon, far from it. I love watching small children filled with excitement searching for Easter eggs. One of the most sweet and funny scenes is a toddler reaching down to pick up an Easter egg just to spill out those she already has in her basket.

It's unrealistic to think big-box stores aren't going take advantage of cute Easter bunnies and colorful plastic eggs in order to make money. There's little "commercial" value in the true image of Easter - the empty cross. The cross is hard to explain; it evokes suffering; it reminds us that Jesus' death was very painful; and it reminds us, we all are sinners. But that's the point of it isn't it? Rather than running toward candy filled plastic Easter eggs, we should be running toward the cross; running toward the empty cross. It proves that "He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today!"

Heavenly Father
Help us remember to run toward the empty cross. Keep it in the forefront of our worship of you. It is the cross where all wounds of sin are healed and through which we have a way to you. Thank you for this gift of life with you now and forever more. He lives! Amen.

paperlessWe're Going Paperless This Sunday!
This Sunday we will recognize Earth Day throughout our worship service. As an Earth Care Congregation, we are always looking for ways to be better stewards of God's creation. So, this Sunday we will NOT have paper bulletins at either service. The entire service will be projected and will give you all the information that you need. If you would be willing to test an epub version of our bulletin on your tablet or smartphone, click here to learn how to do that!
 galaAuction and Dinner Theater
Looking for great entertainment? An exciting auction with fantastic items, places, and services to bid on? A wonderfully worthy way to support the youth of the church? LOOK NO FURTHER! Sunday, May 21, is the Annual Youth Gala: Auction and Dinner Theater!

Doors open at 5:00 for a preview and opening bids and raffles on themed baskets, babysitting services, houses in vacation locations and more!

At 5:30, be seated and served an incredible dinner that will transport you to an exotic locale, including empanadas, saffron rice, beans, perfectly seasoned chicken, and more, all designed and crafted by Mandy's loving and skilled hands!! Our youth will provide for your every need with top-notch service and a smile!

The top-notch show to follow will include talents from all over WFPC, with many youth faces you know and love keeping you entertained as you enjoy your dessert and bid on that "can't miss it" item!

Our goal in all of this...to fully support our youth in their efforts to expand their faith through mission opportunities and faith formation conferences. These are often some of the most foundational experiences of church for youth, and are sadly also quite often cost prohibitive to many families! The funds raised through this gala will offset the cost for our youth, and open the doors for them to experience even more faith-building moments!

We want to aim for the stars- so help us make this year's event a huge success and bring in at least $8,000!!! Invite your neighbors, invite your family, invite folks you chat with in the grocery. This event is one not to be missed!!

Mark your calendars now, and keep reading in the coming weeks for auction specifics, RSVP information, and more excitement!

Relay for Life
Each year our church participates in the local Relay For Life, which is an annual event that raises funds for the battle against all types of cancer, remembers those who lost their lives to cancer, and celebrates the lives of all cancer survivors. We do this because Christ commands us to, and because we are all touched, in one way or another, by this terrible disease. We are seeking participants for this year's Relay. To volunteer or to get more information, please contact Bernie Hardy at 919-665-8130.

Wanted: Boys' Action Figure Costumes
Family Promise is hosting families experiencing homelessness at our church during the week of June 11. In January, a bag full of girls' princess and Disney costumes was donated to our Family Promise program. Just the words, "We have a bag of princess dresses" made one apprehensive little girl come running through the doors of the CLC on New Year's Day. Now we are hoping to acquire action figure costumes so the boys can dress up, too. Please leave costumes in the donations closet in the main building. We are also hoping to acquire a mirror so the children can see themselves all dressed up. Please call Millie Seiler if you have one to donate: 585-202-4442.
