Spring forward Saturday night - Daylight Saving Time begins!

The Presbyterian Church recognizes two sacraments - Baptism and the Lord's Supper. One definition of a sacrament is "a visible sign of inward grace, especially one of the solemn Christian rites considered to have been instituted by Jesus Christ to symbolize or confer grace."

"...water, bread, and wine express promises, not that we make to God but that God makes to us, to which we may respond in obedient faith. They are signs of mercy to us and of God's immediate presence in our midst. We are cleansed through water and fed through bread. We are brought into community by baptism and sustained in the community by communion." -
Thomas C. Olden, Methodist Minister

This past Sunday, we celebrated the Lord's Supper and the week before, a baptism of one of the high school youth, both at the 9 AM service. Two Sundays, two sacraments, and what struck me was not only the presence of God at each, but a feeling of community as well.

Cleansed through water, fed through bread. Not a bad way to experience God!

pkersSpring Church-Wide Work Day March 12
Our big church-wide work day is Saturday, March 12, from 8 AM until late afternoon. This is an "all hands on deck" work day. We are asking Sunday school classes, Scouts, J.O.Y. and Koinonia Groups, families, regular visitors, and our usual crew to come help with our spring cleaning and Easter spruce-up efforts. There are many tasks that all ages and skills can contribute to. We will gather in the CLC at 8:00 to enjoy a breakfast prepared by the world-famous PK culinary team before heading out to work.

 joyJ.O.Y. Group
"Just Older Youth" Group will meet tonight in the CLC between 6 and 6:30 PM, and enjoy our covered dish dinner at 6:30. The Crawfords and Franks are coordinating our St. Patrick's Day dinner, so bring your favorite Irish dish.

Dr. George Braswell, Senior Professor of World Religions at Campbell Divinity School and Director of the World Religions and Global Cultures Center, will discuss the Islam religion in our country and abroad. Dr. Braswell has been with us before, and always presents interesting information that gets us thinking.

usherThe Usher Team Needs YOU!
We are in need of ushers for both services  - join our team! Ushering is an easy way to get involved, to serve fellow WFPC worshipers, and to build our faith family. Ushers serve on a rotating basis; sign up for the Sundays that work best for you. Training will be provided. For the 9:00 service, please contact Mike Slayton at [email protected]. For the 11:15 service, please contact Mindy Wilkie at [email protected]
koinoniaKoinonia Suppers
Registration for the spring dinner groups, officially called our "Koinonia Suppers," is starting. Koinonia (Koi-no-ni-a) suppers are simply a time for fellowship with other Christians. What could be more fun? This is a great opportunity to get to know members of the congregation and to share good food and good conversation. A group is typically 8 people and meets in a host's home. Most groups enjoy meeting again over the next several months. If you are interested and/or would like more information, please contact Lucy Deeprose at [email protected]. Groups will begin meeting in April or May.
fprwardPray It Forward!
Ladies, please join us for a moving and meaningful morning of prayer on Saturday, April 9, 9:30 - 12:30 in the CLC. The women of WFPC will come together to spend quiet time in prayer focused on building up the body of Christ here at WFPC, in our community, and in our world. We will also spend some time reflecting on our prayer lives and engaging in a variety of prayer strategies. We will finish up our time together sharing a box lunch from the Village Deli. You will be refreshed and renewed both spiritually and physically so that you can head out and "Pray It Forward!" Please invite a friend! Cost will be $10 each, made payable to WFPC, "Pray It Forward" in the memo line. Please RSVP as soon as possible so we can be in contact with you to plan for lunch and materials! Please contact Leslie Olmo at [email protected] to RSVP and for more information and questions.

I said, "Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest." (Psalms 55:6 NIV)

Do you ever feel that way? Of course you do! Last time I checked, we were all human! According to the online version of the Merriam Webster dictionary, rest is "a bodily state characterized by minimal functional and metabolic activities; freedom from activity; a state of motionlessness or inactivity; the repose of death." (Let's forget that last one for now although you will see during this series that lack of rest is indeed highly associated with death!)

One of the primary ways we rest is through sleep. Until the 1950s, scientists and others viewed sleep as a passive activity during which very little happened, a view that is consistent with Webster's first part of the rest definition above. With the advent of modern technology that allows us to map brain functions and tease out neurochemicals, we have learned that our brains are extremely active during sleep. We have also learned that sleep affects our daily functioning and our physical and mental health in many ways that we are just beginning to understand. In the last Leaflets, we talked about sleep needs for women. This month, we'll spend some time looking more generally at sleep -- what it is, why we need it, how much we need and what happens if sleep is not actually restful. Click here to begin the process with general information on sleep. If you would like to take a quiz to see how much you know about sleep, click here.
