OfficersbLogWFPC Officers' Column

Wednesday was Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the U.S. Congress - at the urging of veterans' service organizations - amended the act by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

On this 62nd annual National Veterans Day observance, we honored and remembered all veterans who served and continue to serve in the United States military.

Who did you remember? I remembered my father, Lt. Col. Dale Smith, who served 28 years in the U.S. Army all over the world, but would never talk about anything he did; my husband's cousin, O'Neal Williams, who flew Apache helicopters in Iraq and Afghanistan; and my husband's uncle, Herbert Whitley, who wielded a flame thrower during several horrendous battles in the South Pacific during World War II and never recovered from the horror...

Thank you to all our veterans, and thank you to God for this wonderful country where we have the freedom to live, work and worship as we choose, and for Wake Forest Presbyterian Church, our church home.

Peace and blessings,

Kathy Drake

Elder for Mission and Outreach

pkthankyouThank You
The Fellowship and Events Deacons, along with the rest of the Holy Hay Day planning team, would like to thank everyone who made our fall festival such a success! Your participation helped to make this a wonderful day, whether you cooked a pig, decorated a car trunk, played great music or simply contributed to the feeling of fellowship by being part of the crowd. And what's better than having a great time? It's the knowledge that the day's proceeds totaled almost $1,900, all of which will be applied to our Debt Elimination fund! Thanks again to everyone who took part in this endeavor!
decorateTime to Decorate!!!
It's time to clothe our church in the joyous colors and glorious symbols of Advent and Christmas! Come join the decorating team on Sunday, November 22, following the 11:15 service. We will assemble and decorate trees, hang the greens, and place the season's banners throughout our church home. Make it a family activity; make it a family tradition. People of all ages can have a hand in rolling out a holly, jolly Christmas. We will start it all with a delicious light lunch. So we can be sure to have plenty of food, please let us know if you will join us by emailing Kathy Dudley at [email protected] or Kim Newton at [email protected].
As part of our commitment to reach out to others, members and friends of WFPC participate yearly in Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan's Purse, an international Christian relief organization. Boxes are filled with small gifts for a boy or girl and then shipped to a processing center in NC to be checked and packed for shipment. The boxes are presented as Christmas gifts to children in many countries around the world through the Samaritan's Purse organization. These children may be refugees, survivors of a natural disaster or victims of poverty. This ministry highlights for us the importance of nurturing our children.

  • Boxes are now available in the narthex and CLC
  • Final day to drop off filled boxes is Sunday, November 22 by 12:30 PM
  • Each box must have a "boy/girl" label indicating the age range
  • Include a $7 check to cover shipping and handling, payable to "Samaritan's Purse," not WFPC
DailyWalkDaily Walk Adult Sunday School
From Sunday, November 8, through the end of the year, the Daily Walk Adult Sunday School Class is studying Andy Stanley's "In the Meantime." Andy Stanley is one of the favorite authors of the Daily Walk, and his material is always thought-provoking and life changing. For more background, see meantimeseries.org. This is a study about dealing with very difficult situations, and though that sounds ominous, everyone can benefit from these lessons. Please join us in Modular 3 Room 3 Sunday mornings at 10 AM, and feel free to contact Marv Baker at [email protected] for more information.
Christmas Angel
ChristmasAngelChristmas Angel Program
It is November, and it is time to start gearing up for our Christmas Angel Program. This year we are collecting small stuffed animals, word search books, pens and homemade Christmas cards to distribute during our program at Hillside Nursing Home at 10:30 AM on Saturday, December 19. Please plan to come sing carols and help hand out the gifts with other church members that morning. Older adults LOVE to see the children, so it is a great way your family can make lonely people very happy!

Also, please donate financially for the Christmas Angel Program to get gifts for families in need in our area, as well as at the Battered Women's Shelter.  Please make sure you write "Christmas Angel Program" on the memo line of your check, or use one of the special envelopes you'll find in your bulletin on November 15 or 22. If you have any questions, contact Dana Wills at [email protected]
Friday, 12/4 from 6 to 9 PM
Saturday, 12/5 from 6 to 9 PM
Sunday, 12/6 from 5 to 8 PM

The set is looking good, but we still have a few more things to do at the next WTB work day, which will be on Saturday, November 21. Some of us will start at 8:30 AM, but come whenever you are able. You will be finished by noon. Our main focus will be putting up the black felt, hanging the breezeway panels, and touch-up painting. If you can, bring gloves, cordless screwdrivers, ladders and, of course, a sunny smile.

The WTB Ministry Team needs you! We need people to fill our last few speaking parts and support roles.

The Wake Forest CROP Hunger Walk is set for Sunday, November 15, beginning and ending at a NEW LOCATION, the Wake Forest Historical Museum at 414 North Main Street. Sign-in starts at 2 PM and the step-off is at 2:30. The route is approximately 1.5 miles on sidewalks that include a view of beautiful historic homes in Wake Forest and also part of the seminary's campus. Volunteers will provide water.

Join or financially support the WFPC team at www.cropwalkonline.org/wakeforestnc. Walkers should bring comfortable walking shoes, any cash donations received, and non-perishable foods for the Tri-Area Ministry Food Pantry. They should also bring stationery/cards/envelopes to write notes of encouragement to deployed soldiers through our Mission to the Military and to people in local households who will receive a grocery bag filled with the collected food.

Help us to "End Hunger One Step at a Time." Twenty-five percent of the funds raised on the Wake Forest walk will go to Tri-Area Ministry. Other funds will provide programs in the U.S. and around the world to end hunger and poverty and to provide disaster relief.

For information or a cash donation envelope, contact Sandy Christos at [email protected] or 919-217-6147.
ParishNurseParish Nurse November News: Alzheimer's Disease Part 2
You suspect that someone you love has Alzheimer's Disease (AD) or some other form of dementia. Now what? Your first step should be a complete physical examination by the person's primary healthcare provider. Be sure to mention all your concerns. If at all possible, you should discuss your concerns with your loved one before the provider visit, so that you are free to talk with the provider during the exam. Click here for a brief video on how to prepare best for a primary care provider visit. Although the video is not specific to AD, it provides you with steps to consider before and during the visit. What happens next, if a primary care provider agrees that there is a reason for concern? Click here for information on who can best make the diagnosis and how it is made.
