Parish Nurses
Summer Health

Been hot recently? If you answer that question with a "no", please make an appointment with your care provider immediately! With temperatures in the 90's and the heat index in triple digits, the risk of heat-related illnesses increases dramatically. Infants and young children, adults over 65, individuals with some chronic illnesses and those who take some medications are at higher risk for heat-related problems than the general population. But so are adolescents and individuals who work outside! Check out this article Click here
for several pages that contain an overview of heat-related illnesses, symptoms of various heat-related illnesses, treatments and prevention. The second article Click here provides information about heat exhaustion, risk factors for heat exhaustion and appropriate treatments. Taking extra care of yourself and children on hot days is important and well worth the time and energy

Greetings!

Christmas in July! I have always loved the idea. Summer is wonderful. Picnics, water sports, beaches, fireworks, outdoor concerts, good books, sunshine and vacations are on all our schedules. Time even seems to slow down a bit. On the church calendar we are into that delightful season known as "ordinary time".

Summer is a time for rest and renewal, not just physical but spiritual as well. The Christmas in July idea encourages us to spend a little time during the lazy days of summer reflecting on the story of Jesus' birth. We wonder again about the wise men, the camels, Herod, the shepherds, Mary, Joseph and the manger but most of all about the baby whose birth that night in a stable in Bethlehem changed the world forever.

The Christmas season can be a hectic one and the real reason for the season can tend to get lost in the crush. WFPC has a very active Christmas ministry including Walk Through Bethlehem, Operation Christmas Child and the Christmas Angel program and our WFPC congregation has always been generous in its support of these ministries. You can read more about each area on the church website and you will hear more about each in generosity spotlights in the next few weeks. These ministries impact many lives in our local area and around the world.

Please take a few minutes this summer to reconnect with the story of Jesus' birth and reflect on what it means to you. And please pray for our Christmas ministries and the many lives they touch.

Youth Announcements
Please be in prayer for our Middle School Youth and advisers as they return from the Massanetta Middle School Conference #2 on Sunday July 12 (Orange "As you go ..." wristband). These 11 representatives of Wake Forest Presbyterian Church have been learning and exploring how to "Wear Love" in a sometimes-discouraging world. Pray that God reveals ways that they can change attitudes, relationships and communities with love and grace.
Is God nudging you to work with the Youth in His kingdom?
If so, schedule a phone call or a coffee date with Director of Youth Ministries Amy Donahoo. Together, we can talk through different opportunities to teach Sunday School, lead small-group discussions or supervise mission outings in the fall. Listen for God's calling and then dial up Amy at   (919) 608-0439 or email at  [email protected].

Hands and Feet in action...The kids of WFPC have been putting their hands and feet to their FAITH!

  • On Sunday, July 5th, His Kids Sunday school packed TWENTY-TWO (a church record) boxes to send to our troops that are stationed in the USA and overseas. These boxes were packed by our kids and their parents as a family mission project. They were filled with personal hygiene items, food products, socks, and a card made by the loving hands of one of our kids. The items used were those donated by our kids during the week of VBS. They experienced the joy of giving, preparing, and sending all in His name!
  • This week, a donation of $501.00 was made to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance in order to help the families of Nepal begin to rebuild from the devastating earthquakes that hit that area this Spring. Our kids collected the money during VBS.
  • ...and EVEREST VBS continues in Belize! God has a mighty way of using us...and our gifts. Who knew that our High school youth and chaperones were going to be called to teach VBS in Belize? God did! We were able to share our curriculum and ideas with the Belize team so that they would be equipped with needed items in order to share a "Mountain Top" experience with the children in Belize while learning about God's mighty power.
And may all God's children say..."Amen"!

Ministry To Military

During VBS, the youth collected enough items to fill 22 care packages!  On Sunday, July 5th some of us met and packed those boxes!  Not only did they collect the items, but they organized the items for packing, made cards for each package, filled the boxes and then loaded them up!  They were able to not only collect the items but to use their own hands to make a difference in the lives of those serving.  We have received the name of a man that is not receiving mail and we will be sending some of these to him.  Thank you so much VBS, Lisa Baker and Angie Perry!  Y'all ROCk like that big Mt. Everest rock!

If you would like to help make a difference, M2M is in need of canned items such as tuna, chicken, protein bars, crackers, nuts, drink packets, tube socks, etc.  You can drop off these items in the M2M box in the Narthex.  Cards or letters made out to "any soldier" can also be placed there.

Thanks,
Deidra

WE ARE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE A CONGREGATION-WIDE EVENT

Truth Be Told: Art, Ice Cream and Missions co-sponsored by Youth Ministries and Women's Ministry.  On July 30 at 6:30 PM everyone is invited to turn blank canvas into wall art that reminds us of God's presence and promises. The painting is done with templates, so even the most self-conscious artists will create something they love. You choose the colors and the Bible verse. During painting breaks, the Women's Ministry Team will provide an Ice Cream Sundae Bar to enjoy! The cost is $30 per person. A portion of all payments goes to ministry community paint parties and financial contributions to various organizations. You can paint and eat and cool off this summer AND help others at the same time! To get a peek at the artwork, go to truthbetoldart.com.  We'll gather in the CLC multipurpose room.  For more information or to volunteer for this event, contact Director of Youth Ministries Amy Donahoo at [email protected] or the Women's Ministry Team at  [email protected]. You can register by clicking here.
