Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network
Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network (WIHN) - WFPC will host homeless families at our church three times in 2014, providing food, shelter, transportation and hospitality to 4 - 5 families. WIHN provides professional case management for these families as they work to restore their independence. A network of churches houses and feeds the families and transports them back and forth to the WIHN center in Raleigh where they are provided with day care or transportation to school for their children, transitional housing and job placement assistance, and counseling, as needed. Many volunteers are needed each time we host to set up the facilities, prepare food, provide fellowship and transportation and spend the night at the church. The next hosting dates are Sunday, January 25, 2015 through Sunday, February 1,2015.

You can sign up online here, or contact Sharon Kucyk at [email protected] or Kathy Drake at [email protected]
or 919-570-1100 for more information.

Wrestling with Resolutions

January finds the Fuller family most weekends - and many weeknights - sitting in gym bleachers across the state of NC cheering on the North Raleigh Christian Academy (NRCA) Knights Wrestling Team as they challenge competitors from local and faraway schools in nail-biting matches.   Jack, now a sophomore 120 lb weight class wrestler, is proudly wrestling for his fourth year at NRCA as part of the squad.

While Fred, himself, was a high school championship wrestler, it was a sport that for which for many years I had no interest.   The competitiveness and athleticism of the sport completely escaped me.   The artistry of well-orchestrated competitive moves was mistaken for sloppy grappling.  The required endurance to outlast a competitor for 6 long minutes was lost on me.  And the drive that is required to take on a personal competitor in front of a huge audience - fans and foes alike - in spite of fears or misgivings, was a complete underestimation of the power of the human spirit.  Especially, when it is the spirit of a teenager putting his all on the line on the mat each week.  However, when our own son chose to go down the path of wrestling, of course, I had to learn. And learn I did (though I still jab Fred during matches to understand the ref's call or to ask why points were not given).

As with many things in life, I believe that God puts in our path things, thought while they may not be fully understood, teach us a lot.  Including wrestling.... I have learned: We are Better Together. While ultimately a 1:1 competition, the camaraderie of the wrestling squad took me completely by surprise.   I have witnessed more gracious sportsmanship on the wrestling mat that I have seen in other sports.  The respect these guys have for their competitors and for each other is truly amazing.  And knowing that others 'have your back,' can inspire the win or offer consolation during a hard-fought loss.   Perseverance Builds Character. Just as the body is transformed through exercise that stresses and re-trains the muscles, your personal character is shaped by challenges.  Easy, comfortable situations don't prepare us to deal with the tangles that will no doubt come our way.  Knowing that you have the ability to endure without giving in or giving up, is a gift.  Wrestling is a Commitment.  Daily - not just commitment to proper exercise and nutrition, but also to making intentional decisions on and off the mat to improve your performance.  And at the start of the new year, when my own freshly minted resolutions and good intentions are threatened by lack of time, effort or energy, wrestling serves as a reminder that every day is a chance to improve and live up to the commitment that I've created.

So, with this new year of new beginnings just dawning, I invite you to consider the commitments and intentions that you've made:  restoring your spirit, reinvigorating your body, strengthening your family, engaging your community, and living your God-given call.  Wake Forest Presbyterian Church is a community of believers that will join you on your journey, cheer your efforts, stand by you in your disappointment, and help you take the next step forward.  I encourage you to find your place, join a class, volunteer, lead, teach learn - to build the community and to join in service of our Lord.  We will all be strengthened by your resolution!

Blessings, Krista Fuller, Elder of Membership, Evangelism & Growth

P.S. - And many, many thanks to the NRCA wrestling family and friends, who share God's life, love and laughter with me each week.

Bereavement Care

As God's people, we are called to help each other in time of need.  Whether there is a birth, illness or a death, we at WFPC are aware of the increasing need to reach out with Christian love and concern to our families.

Did you know that through the Bereavement Care Team WFPC provides to all members a funeral service and reception at no cost?  Wake Forest Presbyterian is a caring community of faith that seeks this opportunity to support our church family in times of a loss.

If you are interested in helping with the Bereavement Care Team please contact, Sandie Buda, [email protected].

The purpose of the team is to allow the Pastor and the church office to continue with the day to day work of the Church while members of the Bereavement Care Team follow the guidelines and move the funeral process forward in an orderly manner.
