Canyon Middle School Presentation & Recognitions 

Matthew Steinecke, Principal of Canyon Middle School,  

along with staff;  Assistant Principals, Doris De La Torre, April Wong, Jason Whiteman, and students, Ria Panjwani, Alyana Chinn, and Kylie Rojas described the purpose of the presentation as "To show Canyon's programs that are above and beyond the general program. Safety Organization Achieving Goals Respect."

Assistant Principal, Doris De La Torre presented the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program. Assistant Principal, April Wong updated the board on Technology. and Assistant Principal, Jason Whiteman presented after school tutoring and Saturday school.


Ria Panjwani, Alayna Chinn, and Kylie Rojas talked about AVID, Puente Club, Castro Valley Outreach, Parade of Lights, We Day, and EL Field Trips.




Alayna Chinn was recognized as an outstanding student for displaying strong organizational skills, enthusiasm, creativity, hard work, and positivity. Read the full recognition here.

Linda and Chris Jones were recognized as outstanding volunteers for their contributions to the students, parents, and staff of Canyon Middle School.  Read the entire recognition here. 
 
 
Second Interim Budget Report 2014-2015
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Candi Clark presented the Second Interim Budget Report 2014-2015.  The district legally presents its budget in December (First Interim Budget), March (Second Interim Budget) and June (Final Budget).  Dr. Clark reviewed the key aspects of the budget and the board certified that it can meet its financial obligations for the current and two subsequent years.  For the full 2014-2015 Second Interim Report click here.

Eden Area Regional Occupational Program (ROP) 

Linda Granger, Superintendent of the Eden Area ROP, reviewed the 2013-2014 data with the board including the following; enrollment by pathway, support for work based learning, support for career pathways, and the funding model for ROP.   Ms. Granger mentioned that currently a high school diploma is not enough for graduating students and the ROP programs give students their start each year in exciting and rewarding careers through secondary Career-Technical Education (CTE) courses.  Castro Valley high school students are enrolled in ROP programs-both on the high school campuses as well as at the ROP Center.  

 
Selection Process for the Next Superintendent
The board discussed the process to select a superintendent to replace Jim Negri, who will retire June 30, 2015.  The board solicited proposals from firms that conduct superintendent searches.  A subcommittee of President John Barbieri and Vice President Jo Loss screen eight proposal on February 25 and narrowed the pool of firms to interview to three that will be interviewed on March 4.  Once a firm is selected, there will be opportunity for public input.  Once the details of the process are finalized, they will be communicated to the public. Board Actions
At the meeting, the board took the following actions:
  • approved the Financial Condition/Second Interim Report for 2014-2015;
  • adopted a resolution to Declaring April 2015 to be Public Schools Month; and
  • approved the Consent Agenda, which included the following:
    • approval of the Purchase Order Report, the Position Control Report, the Personnel Report, the Out of State Conference Request, and the upcoming District-Sponsored overnight Trip;
    • acepted donations to the district,
    • adopted a resolution for Disposal of Obsolete and/or Surplus Property and an authorization to Solicit Bids for the Removal and Replacement of the Roofs at the Castro Valley High School, Wing 800 and the District Office;
    • approved the Special Education Compromise and Release Agreement for OAH Case No. XXXXXX0726 and Case No. XXXXXX0728
    • adopted the Board Meeting minutes from the Board Meetings of February 26, 2015 and March 4, 2015.
