Castro Valley Unified School District
 Budget Update

Dear (Contact First Name),

The 2015-2016 California budget season is already under way even though Governor Brown will not release his Proposed 2015-2016 budget until January 9, 2015.  Budget Update is published on an as needed basis to keep the community informed about the California budget and the district budget.

As the California Budget Project (CBP) notes, "While the January-to-June period gets most the attention, the ongoing process of crafting the budget is an ongoing enterprise, giving Californians ample opportunity to stay engaged and involved year-round."  CBP has produced an excellent Infographic on the state budget process illustrating the year-round process.

One of the first significant events in the budget process is when the Legislative Analyst Office (LAO) releases the 2015-2016 Fiscal Outlook Report, which occurred on November 19, 2014.  The outlook for education begins on page 21.  For a quick overview of the budget, go to the Infographic.

The district has already started the budget process when the Board of Education certified the First Interim Report at the board meeting on December 11, 2014.  The report states that the district can meet its fiscal obligations for the current year and two subsequent years; however, the district is currently in negotiations with the Castro Valley Teachers Association (CVTA).

The next major event will be the release of the Governor's Proposed 2015-2016 Budget on January 9.  Once the proposed budget is released, there will be updates.

Sincerely,

Jim Negri
