Looking Ahead

Within the next several months, The YCS Alliance of Services - a partnership between Our House and YCS - will open four new Sawtelle homes for young adults with challenging developmental disabilities.  The homes will give these young men and women an opportunity to be part of their communities and develop their independent living skills.

November 2013

NFL NY/NJ Super Bowl Committee and NFL Foundation
announce their support for renovation projects
on the anniversary of superstorm Sandy

YCS awarded $160,000 in grants for gym restoration,
a new computer lab and fitness center

Governor Chris Christie, Janet Sharma, Executive Director of the Bergen Volunteer Center, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, New York Jets owner Robert W. Johnson IV and NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee President and CEO Alfred F. Kelly Jr. gather outside The Bergen Long Term Recovery Center in Moonachie to announce a series of capital improvement projects, including the YCS George Washington School gymnasium, to be completed by the Host Committee's Snowflake Youth Foundation.

The Snowflake Youth Foundation awarded YCS a second grant
to convert a large garage on the Kilbarchan campus into a Fitness Center for the children, and a modular Computer Lab at George Washington School which can be used for both school-based and after-school & weekend programming.

"The children in our care must rely on YCS to provide after-school and weekend activities as well as enriching educational opportunities," says Richard Mingoia, YCS President and CEO. "Thanks to these grants, YCS will have three new, safe and supervised facilities for the children to play, learn, and be healthy."

Texas Hold 'Em Benefit
Players at the final table wish each other well

This year's poker benefit, held for the first time at the beautiful Glen Ridge Country Club, was organized by the YCS Central Region Advisory Council.  The event raised funds for mini grants for YCS educational, residential and community-based programs in the Essex County area.
The Laurie Foundation continues its commitment
to support a YCS group home

At the end of October, YCS received a generous grant from the Laurie Foundation to replace all the wood floors at the Laurie Haven group home in Edison. The mid-term,  psychiatric children's home for 10 boys and girls, ages 6 to 13, was named in honor of  Blanche and Irving Laurie and the Laurie Foundation, in 1998, for their commitment to support services for the children in YCS' care.

Cheers for Kilbarchan Flag Football Team for winning the Special Olympics Gold Medal for the fifth straight year.

Under the leadership of YCS coaches James Magazine, Luis Mangual and Andre Hernandez the young men on the KB football team showed true grit and determination as they made their way to the final two games of the Flag Football Special Olympics games in Lawrenceville, N.J. The boys dominated both games scoring a
 total of 80 points.

YCS Congratulates Hakeem Huggins
on joining the New York Jets

This summer NFL running back Kareem Huggins inspired 100 youth participating at the YCS Quest for the Cup sports tournament, by sharing his struggles and determination to return to the NFL after being side lined for 3 years with a serious injury. We look forward to welcoming Huggins back to the Quest next summer.
What Our Children Would Like You to Know

"This poem was written near the end of my recovery from a severe depression. I had finally reached a point in my life where I could differentiate between pessimism and optimism. Up until then my poetry tended to be very dark, and emotionally troubling. So I guess you can say that this poem was very well needed. It actually helped bring my depression to a close."

Who's To Say

Who's to say I got what I deserved,

Or that my prayers were or were not heard,

Who's to say I will never make it,

Or my generation will never fit,

Who's to say god is definitely a man,

Or someone should always take a stand,

Who's to say my life only has a beginning and an end,

Or determine I can have only one best friend,

Who's to say in troubled times I cannot smile,

Or say I cannot make it the whole mile,

Who's to say my happiness can not last,

Or my future is always determined by my past,

Who's to say my heartbreak will always end in pain,

Or the rainbow can only appear after the rain,

Who's to say my laughter has to come with a reason,

Or say work and responsibility can not be fun,

Who's to say my family is only tied with blood,

Or goodbye can not ever end in good,

Who's to say society is always right,

Or seeing can only come with having sight,

Who's to say my beauty is confined to what you see,

Who's to say this poem questions anyone else but ME.
