2014 Hoffmann Award winners announced by SCCSBA
The Santa Clara County School Boards Association (SCCSBA) has announced the 2014 winners of its prestigious Glenn W. Hoffmann Awards. This year marks the 30th year of the awards ceremony, which celebrates school programs that significantly affect student success in the region.
Entries are scored based on their impact on students, innovation, creativity and whether the program is replicable and sustainable. The Hoffmann Awards not only provide an opportunity to honor these exemplary programs, but they also provide a venue for other Santa Clara County schools to learn from, and potentially implement, similar programs that can benefit the students in our community.
Here are the winning programs, which will be honored during an awards ceremony on April 30th:
- San Jose Unified School District: Washington Elementary School's Madre-a-Madre program
- Campbell Union Elementary School District: District-wide, Positive Discipline for Latino Parents
- Sunnyvale Elementary School District: Columbia Middle School's FLEX for Intervention and Enrichment

The awards honor Glenn W. Hoffmann, who served as the Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools from 1967 to 1984, and believed that leadership was a key factor in educational reform.
A committee of school administrators and board members scored the school and district entries, and awards were given to the three programs which received the highest scores from the judging pane.
Videos highlighting the philosophy behind each program, along with their respective accomplishments, will be shown during the program.

Showcase focuses on English Learner achievement
The Multilingual Educational Services team, part of the SCCOE's Curriculum & Instruction department, will host the annual A Look at Learning Showcase on Tuesday, April 29 from 3 to 6 p.m.
Superintendents, administrators, board members, teachers, parents and community partners will all convene at the showcase to hear directly from district and school leaders on the implementation of a systems approach for English Learner (EL) achievement tied to the new Common Core (CCSS) and English Language Development Standards (ELD).
Educators will share best practices for supporting EL student achievement and celebrate the success of effective implementation teams who have applied research-based methods and practices in classrooms throughout the county. The showcase will also focus on building county, district and site capacity to implement practices that support ELs in accessing the CCSS and ELD standards.
Registration is now open for the showcase, which will feature collaborator presentations, a gallery walk and storyboard exhibitions.

Arts education celebrated in March
March is National Arts Education Month and the SCCOE's Visual & Performing Arts (VAPA) staff and Artspiration team has been encouraging schools to celebrate the positive impact of the arts on students!
The Visual & Performing Arts team received proclamations in honor of Arts Education Month from both the City of San Jose and Congressman Mike Honda. A new, dynamic logo for Artispiration was also launched this month, while bookmarks and other materials highlighting the importance of arts education were distributed by staff to the county's school districts and through the San Jose Public Library system. Earlier this month the SCCOE hosted an exhibition of artwork by students from Los Altos High School. These pieces were installed on the second floor South building landing at Ridder Park. Freestyle Academy, of the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District, will have an exhibition up for the remainder of March and into April. If you find yourself at the SCCOE offices, please take the time to stop by and enjoy this incredible exhibit. These selections of artwork are just the first in a new series of semi-permanent installations that will be presented here at the County Office of Education in the coming months to highlight the art programs of our county schools.
