Should your legacy include your church?
|
|
Our church is an important part of our lives. Our church provides a helping hand for those in need both down the street and across the globe. Its choirs and ministers create special times for us to hear God's word. Most of us can recall a Sunday School teacher, or perhaps have been one. Our church has been a voice of justice and witness in a changing world. You can make sure that continues by including your church in your will or trust.
The Foundation Board works with individuals and churches to enable your legacy to include your favorite ministry.

St. John's United Church of Christ carries on a rich tradition of rural church life and ministry in its south central Douglas County Kansas location. Most of the current members of the congregation are fourth and fifth generation descendants of the founding families, homesteaders in 1868 under the leadership of Rev. Christian Haas.
The life of the congregation is nurtured in several ways. Sunday School meets every Sunday at 10:00 a.m. followed by worship at 11:00. There is an adult class and a class for children. Sunday School offerings are used to support both community and wider church needs, such as the community emergency fund and Every Child's Hope [formerly the Evangelical Children's Home]. The adult class also sponsors an annual Christmas caroling event to visit homebound members and friends and those in care settings. St. John's supports the local Baldwin City food bank. Cash donations are made regularly. Currently a four-month food drive is under way providing food items, infant and child items and personal care items to the pantry. The congregation responded to nearby tornado disasters (town of Reading, KS) with gifts of cash and goods taken directly to the site. St. John's is a Five For Five congregation. St. John's takes part in K-O Conference meetings and ecumenical activities with nearby churches. There is an annual Easter sunrise service followed by breakfast that St. John's hosted this year. There is also an annual Thanksgiving service held at the various churches on a rotating basis. These churches also share a Vacation Bible School program. St. John's is preparing to host an ecumenical summer picnic on July 21. Our two sister UCC congregations, St. Paul's in Eudora and Community UCC in Carbondale, will attend as well as members from our ecumenical neighbors. St. John's is strong in active faith and community service. We invite you to visit us and experience our truly "family of faith" spirit!

| Dates for Churches to be Featured in the KO e-NEWS |
| |
In the three months that I have been with you, I have heard that we need to find ways to increase communication and our sense of being in ministry together. I can extend the invitation, but it will require all of us to actually increase our sharing and communication. This is one simple step we can take in that direction. So,please take a few minutes to find the date assigned to you and mark your calendars to remind you to participate at the assigned time.
Share the good news and ministry of your church with sister congregations! Churches have been assigned a date; so send in a paragraph or two about your congregation's ministry. You may feature a special event, a particular mission, anything that your church is doing well and you want to share. Your stories will encourage and inspire others; so share the good news!
The first date below is the date your church has been assigned and will be featured; the 2nd date the information needs to be submitted; send it early if you like! Send your information to kofocus@yahoo.com
