Media members will again fill our minds with football inanities

Andy Dolich -- 2015

Tick Off at Kickoff,
Part II

By Andy Dolich

With footballs flying through the air, from Pop Warner to the NFL, it's time to review what we will be hearing when players, coaches, broadcasters, athletic directors, general managers, owners and the media start searching for the best way to answer the inane questions asked time after time throughout the season. Here are some phrases we will hear over and over again, subject to translation.

He is a young freshman/rookie. And only 45 years from becoming a card carrying member of AARP.

He really works at his craft. You should see his home-made furniture and paintings.

He needs to take it to the next level. Parking on the first three floors of the team's facility is full.

He has to let the game come to him. Elk, buffalo, deer and an occasional wild turkey visit his house with regularity.

Big players make big plays in big games. He's a little guy at 5'9" and now the coaches are totally confused about what to call him after his 105-yard, kickoff return.

We need to execute. Our firing squad is always on alert.

This is a statement game. We will be checking our deposits and withdrawals with our bank to make sure they balance.

We are going to play the full 60 minutes. It's our favorite Sunday night TV news magazine show.

He has a high football IQ. In his spare time he is figuring out how the New Hadron Collider can be improved and whether the team can draft Higgs boson.

He's a road grader. He gave 280 an A, 101 received a C- and 880 an F.

This game will be won in the trenches. Gotta hand it to the guys who install giant sewage pipes, especially near the Oakland Coliseum.

They are going to load the box. With what?

He always brings athleticism and physicality to the game. Shocking since every NFL player is at the top of the superman food chain in athleticism and physicality. He left his 4.5 forty and 35-inch vertical at home.

He is great in space. NASA called us right after we released him.

Talk about. Challenged sideline reporters who can't phrase an intelligent question on the fly.

He can move the chains. Always impressed at the post-game press conference that his neck can handle that load of gold.

He is a north-south runner. He still believes that Richmond is the capital of the U.S. and the CSA won.

He's our bell cow. Grounds crew is sick and tired of cleaning up his flops.

It's a trap game. We found mice, rats, Dungeness crabs, raccoons and an overweight possum.

If you give him enough time, he'll pick you apart. Turkeys are in complete fear if his team isn't playing on Thanksgiving.

The National Football League. We aren't morons. We know what sport it is. We know the name of the league. We don't need announcers saying it 231 times during the broadcast.

ENJOY THE SEASON!

OWS
One Warm Shirt

By Andy Dolich

Today's world challenges all of us in allocating our philanthropy to those who are having a rough go of it. We are lucky to have built careers, families and friendships that bring us great joy. Occasionally we might take for granted what we have.

I have a very simple request: I Want The Shirt Off Your Back!

Over the past four years I have worked with CSN Bay Area and the St. Anthony Foundation to create a simple program that will warm up the recipients and it's called One Warm Shirt (OWS). Please join me again this year in growing this positive program.

It's a bit early but I heard from many of you last year that if you had more time to save up your swag, the OWS donation could have been larger.

We are collecting as many sweatshirts, hoodies, long sleeve tees and shirts as possible to assist the thousands that St. Anthony's wraps its caring arms around every day in every way. My friends at CSN Bay Area are lending a huge hand in the effort to help top last year's fantastic total. The shirts will be distributed at a special lunch event at St. Anthony's in mid-January of 2017.

Please send what new or lightly-used items you have:
  • from the bottom drawer
  • in your storeroom
  • an irregular pile
  • misprinted logo bin
  • sizes too large or small
  • too ugly
  • inventory of traded player shirts
  • outdated marketing slogans
  • colors that no longer match your eyes.
Send your shirts to:
St. Anthony Foundation
One Warm Shirt (OWS)
Care of: Jenna Fiore
150 Golden Gate Avenue
San Francisco, CA 94102

Please send or deliver your donation by December 27, 2016.

Thank you in advance for your caring and generosity from St. Anthony Foundation, CSN Bay Area and me in supporting One Warm Shirt.

Rivas

Raiders super fan -- 9-19-16 - Ed Jay

Endy Rivas, a.k.a. Storm Raider

I moved to the Los Angeles area when I was about 5 years old, with my mother and my older brother. I wasn't introduced to football until I was around 10 years old, when my step father took us to watch games from time to time. I want to say I was hooked from the start but being a child, I was mostly interested in playing outside with my friends. I didn't go to many games but the ones I did go, to left an impact. I didn't know names but I remembered numbers: 34, 75, 76, 32, and 81.

"Storm Raider" made his debut at an event hosted by the Knights of the Shield in Fresno a few years back. The idea of Storm Raider was mainly to make the game day experience for everyone more enjoyable. I remember how much I enjoyed game days with the super fans. I've had the pleasure of meeting Violator, Gorilla Rilla, Senor Raider, Pin Head, and the list goes on and on. All that changed when I met a good friend known to most as Oaktown Pirate. I will forever cherish his words and his guidance. Miss you brother, R. I. P.

Storm Raider has given me the opportunity to get involved in various charities as well as the ones I am asked to assist with. I've had the honor to meet some absolutely awesome people I've grown to call family. (You know who you are.) I absolutely enjoy the game day experience. The love I get from the RAIDER NATION still leaves me speechless. What I enjoy most, above all, are the smiles on all the children's faces asking to take a picture with me. I guess it takes me back to the days when I was that little kid asking for a picture.

Today am pleased to say I am the president of the Knights of the Shield, Chapter 209, and keeping with tradition, we help our community whichever way possible. From blood drives, Christmas drives, Thanksgiving feasts, monthly feedings for the less fortunate, and so on. We are a family-based organization which shares the same passion.

I am absolutely humbled to be considered a super fan and am completely overwhelmed with the amount of love I've received from the entire Raider Nation! If you see me stomping around, please say hello. See you at the muthaland...RRRAAAIIIIDDEERRRSSSS.
