Raiders - 9-12-16 - Ed Jay
Oakland Raiders coach Jack Del Rio has much to smile about, as his Oakland Raiders defeated the New Orleans Saints at the Superdome, 35-34, to start their 2016 season. Down by one point late in the closing minutes, Del Rio rolled the dice and went for a two-point conversion, rather than face overtime in a hostile environment. The gamble paid off and the Raiders had their first opening-game win since 2011. Photo by Ed Jay.

RACE - 9-12-16
Alberto Blanco is a sentimental favorite of many Race Across America (RAAM) fans, the man who in 2011 (seen above) developed a severe case of the dreaded Shermer's Neck Affliction*. Nonetheless, he completed the 3,000 miles from Oceanside to Annapolis through sheer will, stubbornness and a head support made from bike parts and duct tape to take fourth place and Rookie of the Year honors. He came back for another RAAM last year and despite having life issues that prevented him from training as well as he'd hoped, he declared at the start, "This is going to be war, man, and it's going to come down to who can hurt and who can push themselves, you know?" Unfortunately he withdrew in Salome, Arizona, less than 24 hours into the race when it became apparent he had neither the speed nor condition to contend. Displeased with his 2015 RAAM, Blanco wants redemption and has begun a rigorous training schedule and has just registered for RAAM 2017. (*Named for an early RAAM racer, Michael Shermer, it is a condition of extreme fatigue of the neck muscles that makes it impossible for a rider to hold up his/her head.
The malady is virtually unheard of outside of ultra-cycling.)

The great thing about baseball is that there's a crisis every day.

Media members will again fill our minds with football inanities

Andy Dolich -- 2015

Tick Off at Kickoff

By Andy Dolich

With footballs flying through the air, from Pop Warner to the NFL, it's time to review what we will be hearing when players, coaches, broadcasters, athletic directors, general managers, owners and the media start searching for the best way to answer the inane questions asked time after time throughout the season. Here are some phrases we will hear over and over again, subject to translation.

We really competed. That's nice. What were you supposed to do, take a nap?

He is a high motor guy. We have to change his oil at halftime.

It's a groin. Thank you for that in-depth medical insight.

OTAs are optional. If a player opts to pass on the option, his paycheck will become optional and his activity with the franchise may be optioned out.

He is an amazing downhill runner. Too bad all the fields played on are flat.

Games are decided by turnovers. Betty Crocker just joined our football operations staff.

He took that one to the house. We would have preferred the end zone.

This team won't accept losing. The actual league standings mean nothing to us.

That was a great football play. That usually happens in a freaking football game.

We beat ourselves. It's a bit kinky but it works for us.

He plays within himself. It's amazing. You can see the little guy on his CT scan.

You can't measure heart. Actually you can with an EKG, ECG and angiograms.

This could be his breakout season. His acne is totally out of control.

His mechanics are screwed up. That what happens when you have 11 high-performance imported cars sitting in your garage.

He tweaked something. We have team rules about that and he may be fined.

He has a gun/rocket/bazooka/machine gun/RPG/ for an arm. We always get hassled by the TSA on road trips.

He's a shutdown corner. It's the rest of the neighborhood that he has trouble with.

He's like another coach on the field. We like him on the bench, where he belongs.

It's like a chess match between these two coaches. Unfortunately our coach only plays checkers.

You have to take care of the football. It's so deflating when we don't!

On Draft Day, we never thought he would still be there. At the Bunny Ranch in Elko, Nevada?

He's a great locker room guy. His towel snaps are the best in the league.

He's a lunch pail guy. Teammates are always stealing his PBJs, bananas, carrot sticks and juice boxes.

He's the complete package. Some of our guys are concerned about the bow he wears in his hair.

Big third down. One time, just one time, can an analyst say this third down is completely unimportant?

These first games can set the tone for the entire season. At least until the second game.

ENJOY THE SEASON!

2017 Drive,
Chip and Putt Championship at the Olympic Club

By John Abendroth

On Saturday, September 10, 80 juniors from the west coast competed in the Regional Qualifying for the 2017 Drive, Chip and Putt Championship at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, with an opportunity for the eight winners of each of the age groups to advance to Augusta National, in April of 2017.

The juniors and their families found a foggy San Francisco day but as the five hours of competition played out, the emotions and the excitement of the winners advancing to Augusta seemed to win out over the weather. Many of the competitors had brothers or sisters who had tried to qualify, and it was fun to see the support each of the players received from their families.

The age brackets include juniors from 7 years old to 15 years old and they are given points for their results for driving distance and accuracy, chipping and putting.

Howard Shu from Saratoga started his golf career by watching the Hot-Shot golf video game, progressed to mini-golf and now will be on the grounds of Augusta National as a 10-year-old. Jordan Spieth is his favorite player and he may meet Spieth next year.

For Malia Schroeder, winner of the Girls 12-13 division, it may seem like "old-hat" as she has tried four times to make it to Augusta and, in fact, this will be her second trip. Last year she finished fifth at Augusta but she feels she can learn from her previous competition and is ready to win in 2017.

The Drive Pitch and Putt Championship is an effort by Augusta National, the Masters Tournament, the USGA and The PGA of America. For more information, visit:

Here are results for the eight juniors who will advance to Augusta National for 2017.
