I'm going to start giving him some of my responsibilities -- the guy has handled everything else," Shaw said. "I think when you have a great player, the last thing you want to do is pump the brakes. You want to push the accelerator."  Stanford's season begins in just three weeks with a home opener at Stanford Stadium on Friday, September 2 against the Kansas State Wildcats. © 2016 Kenny Karst Photography.

After a serious training accident, with subsequent shoulder surgery last year, the Race Around Austria (RAA) was a come-back event for Strasser (above) who opted to sit out this year's Race Across America, a decision he made in January when it was evident he would not be up to his desired condition for RAAM. But that extra time to heal and train worked for RAA. "The injuries are completely healed and I am 100 percent fit," Strasser said prior to the start of  RAA, in which he finished first.

Andy Dolich -- 2015

BillyBall or Beaneball?

By Andy Dolich

On Aug. 6 the Oakland A's, donning throwback uniforms for their day game with the Cubs at the Coliseum, celebrated the 1981 "BillyBall" playoff team, a salute to fiery manager Billy Martin. Martin, with no major changes to personnel, took a team that two years earlier had lost 108 games and made the A's a winner in that bizarre strike-torn season.

As part of the promotion, Oakland gave away BillyBall retro T-shirts to the first 15,000 fans in attendance, showed BillyBall commercials and introduced a number of players from that unique time in A's history.

Earlier this month the A's highlighted their giveaway policy by sending quality players Josh Reddick and Rich Hill to the Los Angeles Dodgers for pitchers Jharel Cotton, Frankie Montas and Grant Holmes.

Last season the Big Bye Bye was Josh Donaldson, who went on to win the 2015 American League MVP for the Toronto Blue Jays. Add to the list of Arrivederci A's Ben Zobrist, Yoenis Cespedes, Brandon Moss, Derek Norris, Addison Russell, Jeff Samardzija, Jon Lester, Scott Kazmir -- and more players to be named later.

Here's an idea for a promotion that would be an A's fan favorite: Spend as much money as you can afford and field a winner, which is the goal of most franchises in professional sports.

Oakland A's ownership has won the revenue-sharing world series for the past several seasons, with $30-plus million per year of redistributed revenue ending up in their bulging bank account. More important, the owners have seen a significant increase in team value from the purchase price of $180 million in March 2005 to $850 million or more today.

The A's have continually cited their inability to be a keeper or buyer of talent due to the lack of revenue generated from Roto Rooter Stadium, although majority owner John Fisher is listed 288th on the Forbes list of 400 richest Americans in 2015 with a $2.4 billion net worth. A line of prospective new owners would put their money down to buy the team before the next Hello Kitty Bobblehead Night. If you owned the A's, would you have any interest in selling this cash elephant?

Here's a basic overview of how Oakland A's ownership is gaming the revenue-sharing system. Major-league teams participate in a system that redistributes income from the richest franchises to their less profitable partners in an attempt to improve competitive balance. Under the 2012-16 collective bargaining agreement, each team contributes 34 percent of its net local revenue into a pool that gets divided equally among every team. Higher-earning clubs put in more than they get back, while lower-earning clubs receive more than they put in.

A's ownership has been uncharacteristically quiet on the Raiders' relocation merry-go-round and their specific plans to build a new stadium on Coliseum property. No matter how hard Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf pushes to gain some traction for a new A's ballpark, the team will bide its time, since it has a guaranteed yearly profit whether the A's win the World Series or finish last. The estimated revenue-sharing check that the A's deposited from their brethren in MLB was somewhere around $34 million last season. Since 2012, according to published reports, the A's have received $114 million to support a club that is always swimming with the bottom feeders in payroll spending.

Over the past four years the Marlins, Rays, Royals, Padres and A's received a combined $642 million. The franchises that keep on giving are the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants. The mountain of cash deposited since 2012 is a staggering $1.15 billion.

Remember when NBA Commissioner David Stern vetoed the trade of New Orleans guard Chris Paul to the L.A. Lakers in December 2011? If your institutional sports memory is functional, there was a former major-league baseball commissioner, Bowie Kuhn, who vetoed trades by A's owner Charles O. Finley in 1976. Finley wanted to move Vida Blue to the Yankees for $1.5 million, and Joe Rudi and Rollie Fingers to the Red Sox for $1 million each. Kuhn struck down the player sales as "not in the best interests of baseball." Finley had traded slugger Reggie Jackson and Ken Holtzman to the Orioles earlier in the season. Finley called Kuhn a "village idiot." and the legal battle was on. Ultimately the courts ruled against Finley and upheld the commissioner's power. In 1977 the A's won 63 games, ushering in a 10-year stretch with only one winning season -- that insane 1981 campaign.

Note to Commissioner Rob Manfred, who has been publicly supportive of Oakland keeping its baseball team: The fans of this storied franchise are beyond patient in watching their talent traded away. It might be worthwhile for Manfred to look at the best-interests-of-baseball clause and make sure that the A's keep some of the most talented young players in baseball.

Financial victory defined by making mountains of money from a sports franchise is fine. The pursuit of victory on the field is even better.
