ABC News reports new Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant admitted Wednesday that his relationship with former Oklahoma City Thunder teammate Russell Westbrook likely "won't ever be the same again" and that he'll just have to get used to being the villain. "I just told him. I let him know how I felt," Durant said of his conversation with Westbrook. "Obviously our relationship won't ever be the same again. But it's something I wanted to do, and I expressed that to him. Hopefully he respected it." To view a photo album, visit our Facebook page and be sure to LIKE us. Photo by Ed Jay.

The "K"s running along the right field wall (top) at AT&T Park tell the dramatic story of Sunday night, July 10. Starting San Francisco Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner (right) is seen deep into the final innings of a brilliantly pitched game, giving up just one hit and striking out 14 Arizona Diamondbacks batters. Each strikeout is symbolized by a "K" and 14 was the final total. The backwards "K?" The batter was called out and did not swing at his last pitch. Final score: Giants 4, Diamondbacks 0.

Ironman 70.3 Vineman is staged in and around the Sonoma County communities of Guerneville, Windsor and Healdsburg. The split transition race begins at Johnson's Beach, nestled in the redwoods of the town of Guerneville. The 1.2 mile swim out-and-back takes place in the calm, misty Russian River. Athletes transition to their bikes, setting out on the 56-mile course that winds through vineyards and quaint towns. The town of Windsor hosts transition Two, where athletes begin a challenging half-marathon with the finish line at Windsor High School. The course is a tour of Sonoma County's beautiful wine country, passing through four different grape growing regions: Russian River Valley Region, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Chalk Hill. When 57-year-old Seana Hogan (USA) left Oceanside, California she was Race Across America's (RAAM) only 6-time winner. When she arrived 3,069 miles away in Annapolis, Maryland, 12 days, 13 hours, 25 minutes later, she succeeded in breaking the women's 50-59-age category average speed record of 9.83 mph previously held by Kathy Roche-Wallace (USA). Hogan is also now the oldest woman to finish solo RAAM and now the event's only 7-time winner (1992, '93, '94, '95, '97 '98 and 2016) and having a 16-year span between wins is another record. Hogan, who won RAAM 6 times in her 20's and 30's, shared the motivation behind her desire to go for the 50-59 record, "A lot of people, when they get older, realize they can't do something as well as they could when they were younger and then they just don't do it. I don't want to live my life that way. I want to be able to feel free, to do what I want to do and not be swayed by other people and what they think."

Shop Around: Growing Up With Motown in a Sinatra Household
By Bruce Jenkins
Reviewed by Dave Newhouse
|
Bruce Jenkins' writing style sets him apart from other Bay Area sports journalists, in that he merges the past with the present better than other local scribes in offering a historic picture of progress in the sporting arena.
Roger Federer is great, but is he better than Rod Laver? Serena Williams is fabulous, but is she any more fabulous than Helen Wills Moody? Clayton Kershaw is a lockdown pitcher, but is he Sandy Koufax? And couldn't Wilt Chamberlain score 100 against any of today's NBA centers?
These are made-up examples of the manner in which Jenkins educates his loyal column readers in the San Francisco Chronicle. But there's another side of Jenkins' diversified, and earthy, writing skill that once again has surfaced: the world of music.
He was born into one world -- music -- and evolved into another -- sports. His father was the famous orchestra leader-arranger-songwriter Gordon Jenkins, while his mother, Beverly Mahr, was quite the singer back in the golden days of radio. Music or sports, Bruce writes in perfect tune.
Bruce, at 10, gave a piano recital at Nat King Cole's house; then he sat in on Frank Sinatra's recording sessions, conducted by Bruce's father; and he later interviewed Sinatra for his 2005 book Goodbye: In Search of Gordon Jenkins, a tribute to his father, who died in 1984.
Now Bruce is back with his latest book on music: Shop Around: Growing Up With Motown in a Sinatra Household (Wellstone Books). He has shown once again, in encyclopedic style, that he is equally astute in discussing Smokey Robinson or Smoky Joe Wood.
Bruce believes that Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' recording of "Shop Around" is the music end-all, hence the title of the book. If you love music as well as sports, Bruce is your conductor. His detailed account of the revolutionary Motown sound -- a "new kind of soul music" -- makes the reader feel that Bruce could be as accomplished a music critic as he is a sports critic. A book on pitcher Smoky Joe Wood, a 34-game winner with the Boston Red Sox in 1912, awaits.
I've got a decade in age on Bruce, so my music interests began in the 1950s, when rhythm and blues merged with rock 'n' roll to knock such banal ballads as "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window" off the record charts and off the disc jockeys' record stacks. Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and the Platters dominated my world, and I felt about "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On" (Jerry Lee Lewis) the same way that Bruce feels about "Shop Around." Those were my end-alls.
But I learned a great deal, regardless, about music from Bruce's newest book, including how Johnny Cash stole from Gordon Jenkins, turning the latter's "Crescent City Blues" into "Folsom Prison Blues," nearly word for word. Jenkins, the father, received $175,000 for such larceny.
Make no mistake, this is a music book, not a sports book. Bruce makes only a brief commentary on sports, which leads to my only negative comment, not of the writing, but the mindset. Everyone knows Barry Bonds cheated in inflating his home run statistics into record status. But, in Bruce's words, "it never stopped me ... from casting Hall of Fame votes for [Bonds] and rigorously defending that stance against the crowd of self-righteous moralists."
I guess he's talking about me, but in my mind someone who cheats the game is a cheater, no matter if it's Shoeless Joe Jackson or Pete Rose or Barry Bonds. Look at all the home run leaders, league MVPs, and Cy Young Award winners who sullied their careers with accusations of steroid use. None of them belong in Cooperstown.
But don't let that stop you from reading Bruce's book. There's no need to shop around if you like terrific writing, whether it's about layups or lyrics. Bruce is your man, top of the charts.
