RAAM - 3-21-16
A rainy RAAM ride -- Even though the Race Across America (RAAM) begins in mid-June (solos start June 14, teams start June 18), chances are that most RAAM solos and teams will encounter rain somewhere along their journey so having rain gear in the follow car is essential. Above is Christoph Strasser on a wet Missouri night in RAAM 2013. Strasser later recalled he actually enjoyed that rainy night, saying it was cooler and far more comfortable than the stifling heat and humidity he'd endured in that same section the year before. March Madness - 2016
The source of broken hearts and dreams.

Andy Dolich -- 2015

Ode to March
Madness!

By Andy Dolich

Talk about making a racket in the bracket.
I thought my insight would cracket
Ok, I admit I can't hack it.
The picks that I trusted are mostly busted
'Cause the major programs can't be trusted.
And now my chances are totally dusted.
Millions are enthused by March Madness
The next two weeks for me, filled with Sadness.

Andy Dolich has worked as an executive in all four major sports leagues, including the Oakland A's, Golden State Warriors and San Francisco 49ers. He is the managing director and head of U.S. sports practice for Odgers Berndstson, the UK's leading executive search firm, and director of career development for the University of San Francisco's online master's program in the business of collegiate athletics.

Dave Newhouse - 2015
Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall Of Fame Dinner,
March 26

By Dave Newhouse

There are so many awards dinners that you wonder if there are enough honorees. Of course, that's a tongue-in-cheek jab at America's addiction of bestowing trophies on its masses.

But these awards functions do run to excess. How many Hollywood best movie events do we really need? Poor Oscar has all these wannabes. The same thing is true of sports awards dinners. After the Heisman Trophy ceremony, everything pales in comparison. ESPN's Espys are the height of snobbery. Who really cares about a television station that's into preening?

However, there is a unique sports dinner that takes place annually not only in the Bay Area, but all over the world. And it's not some corporation fawning all over itself, but a one-man, fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants promoter, honoring folks who normally might not be honored otherwise.

The promoter's name is Arif Khatib, and for 16 years he has been putting on the Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall Of Fame dinner, locally and internationally. He has inducted countless athletes whose names you know or might not know, for Khatib thinks in eclectic ways.

His 16th dinner is scheduled for Saturday, March 26 at the Doubletree Hotel
in Fremont. This might be Khatib's most eclectic event yet for he has chosen to celebrate Bay Area professional football. That's right, honoring the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers together.

It's a wonderful, novel idea, well-overdue. The 49ers are down-spiraling from their Super Bowl ways, and the Raiders are talking more about moving than winning. But, hey, we have two NFL teams in the same major market, while other major markets across the country have none.

That's reason to celebrate right there, which is Khatib's approach. And so he has assembled former 49ers Dana Stubblefield, Willie Harper, Ray Wersching, Ted Kwalick and Alan Kennedy to break bread with former Raiders John Vella, George Buehler, Robert Jenkins and Mervyn Fernandez. And Kwalick is a former 49er AND Raider. John Madden also will be honored, but his recovery from heart surgery might prevent his attending.

Khatib thinks beyond the playing field with his awards dinners, and so he will present Distinguished Services Awards to community promoter Carolyn Hoskins, Eason Ransom, Dr. Jamie Williams, and Dr. Ramesh Jopra. Ransom and Williams, like Kwalick, were 49ers tight ends.

And why stop with one master of ceremony? Khatib has recruited two: Radio personality and San Francisco Giants public address announcer Renel Brooks-Moon and onetime San Jose State mile-record-holder Ben Tucker.

Khatib always thinks outside the box. And so he also will present Legacy Awards to sports agent Leigh Steinberg, former Raider Clem Daniels, and Bill Walsh in memoriam.

Also present were Michelle Hall (left); Olympian and presenter Dick Fosbury (center); Sharon Chin, mistress of ceremonies (second from right); and Arif Khatib, Hall of Fame founder and president (right). Photo by Rich Yee Photography.

"I do it because of a passion," Khatib said of his dinners, "making a difference in people's lives. Not just the athletes, but I have mentoring programs for young people. I can't think of anything I'd rather be doing than these dinners, though I've never had a sponsor."

Khatib is such a different promoter, he's out there selling tickets to his own event.

"It's not a corporation event," he said. "But it makes me feel good to honor these people, to see them become emotional on the stage in accepting their awards. People have asked me how I do these dinners by myself. It's the spirit of God, leaving something on this Earth that's better.

"The 49ers were the Bay Area's first major-league sports franchise (in 1946). The 49ers and Raiders both have had Super Bowl success. The dinner theme is about professional football, and celebrating what we have, two teams nine miles apart across the bridge. We're very fortunate."

Khatib noticed in attending other sports award dinners the absence of color. So he began his Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame -- originally the Afro Sports Hall of Fame -- with the intention of honoring strictly African Americans. Then in 2009, he changed to a rainbow color.

"Many of our inductees show up and have a good time," he said. "They played in the Super Bowl or the World Series, but they told me if it wasn't for my dinner, they wouldn't be in any hall of fame."

Khatib, an "upper senior," has no plans to discontinue his unique dinners, here and abroad. He was in Nova Scotia last year, and he will be in Toronto this year. He has also been to Kenya, Ethiopia, Puerto Rico five times, and the Virgin Islands.

"I still have more work to do," he said.

Tickets remain available for this Saturday's event, which will run from 6 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. -- Khatib is a stickler for timeliness -- and costs $125 in advance and $150 at the door. Tables and community partnerships are available. For ticket information, phone 510-629-2895 or go on the web at
