Too Many Tools?

By Andy Dolich

Although I wasn't around in 1921, the love affair between sports and commerce began when Major League Baseball authorized the sale of World Series radio rights for $3,000. Yes, $3,000!

In 2009 that check was about even with what the New York Yankees charged for a single ticket behind home plate when they opened the new Yankee Stadium. As sports listenership increased, so did the interests of corporate sponsors. In 1935, Gillette, along with other cutting-edge companies, started sponsoring sports events.

Radio sponsorship grew into TV advertising. Cable jumped to 24/7 coverage of sports. The Los Angeles Dodgers' introduction of the first stadium video board in 1980 gave advertisers another canvas of commerce. The ongoing wave of sponsorship interest added licensing, giveaway promotions, stadium signage, branded concessions, premium seating, marketing programs and branded philanthropy, along with many other sponsor-driven programs.

Today we are in the midst of a deluge of digital tools to analyze, metricize, synthesize and monetize the ever-growing need to maximize sponsor-sport fan synergy. Remember that 3,000 bucks in 1921? The latest MLB TV deal with Fox and Turner, which runs through 2021, is a tidy $6.8 billion.

Having been a team marketer and now a consultant to corporate entities that are looking to maximize revenue through sports properties, I start with a simple question: "Is your sports business plan a long-term strategy?"

The answer is usually, "Of course it is." Upon further review it turns out that in many cases the sports strategy is just a string of disconnected tactics. Corporate sponsors might be jumping on a popular player or a team's bandwagon, pushing a venue giveaway promotion, sponsoring a community event or buying ads on various forms of team media.

Today's marketplace for sponsor-team synergy is teeming with fan-engagement tools. Social, mobile, video, home theaters -- and personalized ads like the kind in the movie Minority Report. There are more apps, programs, digital, mobile magnets, gamification, fantasy and virtual reality to come that provide opportunities for more one-on-one relationship customization. Analytics and metrics provide greater insight in consumer behavior.

There is a marketing battle between Millennials and the over-40 "Perennials." We have a tug of war going on with the looking-up vs. the looking-down generations -- the nanosecond posse vs. the I-can-actually-wait-a-minute mob.

I'm proud to be a Perennial, while at the same time understanding that information is consumed by Millennials in different ways from in the past. I am reminded of an early computer age warning: GIGO -- garbage in, garbage out.

Multiple tools of multitasking marketing are fantastic, but if they aren't being used for the development of a long-term, systemic business model between the fan, sponsor, team, league and broadcasters, what good are they?
*  Are they creating an enhanced service experience for all fans and
    customers?
*  Are they creating new revenue that doesn't cannibalize pre-existing
    dollars?
*  Are they talking the same marketing language as their fan profiles?
*  Are they playing to the DNA of their market?
*  Are they easy to comprehend and use?

Sports are one of the last examples of our shrinking town squares. Stadiums and ballparks serve as rallying points for increasingly diverse and financially fragmented communities. These massive meeting places are the front porch of days gone by.

As the skyboxification and the slicing and dicing of our favorite stadiums and arenas fall into the hands of the sports revenue pivot table metric analyzers, we are losing the glue of unity that binds us together as fans. That glue is people actually talking to each other. The rule of thumb to communicate should not come from the interaction of a thumb with a mobile device or a computer.

Andy Dolich has worked as an executive in all four major sports leagues, including the Oakland A's, Golden State Warriors and San Francisco 49ers. He is the managing director and head of U.S. sports practice for Odgers Berndstson, the UK's leading executive search firm, and director of career development for the University of San Francisco's online master's program in the business of
collegiate athletics.
Odds to win Super Bowl 50
The Carolina Panthers, lead by quarterback Cam Newton, are favored by as many as 5.5-points over the Denver Broncos, led by quarterback Peyton Manning, on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 7. Kickoff is set for 3:25 p.m. on CBS.
