Raiders - 8-30-15 - Al Golub
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer is sacked by Raiders defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. (97) and Oakland Raiders outside linebacker Khalil Mack (52) on Sunday at O.co Coliseum. The Raiders rallied to tie the game in the fourth quarter but fell 30-23 on a late drive by the Cardinals. Photo by Al Golub--Golub Photography.

Raiderettes - 8-20-15 - Ed Jay
Oakland Raiderettes at a sneak preview of the 2015-16 16-month calendar last Wednesday. On Sunday, at the Raiders-Cardinals game, the calendar was introduced to the public. To purchase a calendar, click here. Photo by Ed Jay.

Jen Welter - 8-30-15 - Ed Jay
History was made this year in the NFL when the Arizona Cardinals hired the first female coach. Jen Welter is a preseason intern coaching inside linebackers. Welter has a rich background in football, having played herself. She holds a master's degree in sports psychology and a Ph.D. in psychology. Photo by Ed Jay.

49ers - 8-29-15 - Zagaris
49ers QB Blaine Gabbert finds himself running from pressure. A leaky offensive line contributed to a Denver Broncos victory, 19-12, at Mile High Stadium on Saturday night. Next up for the 49ers: the San Diego Chargers at Levi's Stadium on Thursday night at 7 p.m.

Giants - 8-29-15 - Kenny Karst
The San Francisco Giants' newly acquired right fielder, Marlon Byrd, had a great day at the plate on his birthday Sunday, hitting two doubles and a triple against the St. Louis Cardinals. After dropping two of three to the Cards, the Giants now head to Los Angeles for a pivotal three-game series versus the Dodgers starting Monday. Posey - 8-25-15 - Ed Jay
The Giants' Buster Posey is brushed back by Chicago Cubs ace and strong Cy Young contender Jake Arrieta last Tuesday night. The Giants fell 8-5 but rebounded to win the next two games and take the series. To view a photo album, visit our Facebook page and be sure to LIKE us. Photo by Ed Jay.

Jake Arrieta - 8-25-15 - Ed Jay
Cubs ace Jake Arrieta, who spun a no-hitter against the Dodgers Sunday night, went six innings against the Giants last Tuesday, giving up four hits and one run. Chicago won the game 8-5. To view a photo album, visit our Facebook page and be sure to LIKE us.

A's - 8-19-15 - Z man
A's pitchers congratulate Jesse Chavez as he completes the eighth inning, having held the Dodgers to two hits in the game. The A's would emerge victorious 5-2 and sweep the two-game series.

Rich Yee - Giant race - 8-23-15
The sixth annual Giant Race Half Marathon, 10K and 5K took place on Sunday with the finish line ending in center field of AT&T Park. The event was one of four events hosted by the Giants this year, including races in San Jose, Sacramento and Scottsdale, Ariz. Photo by Rich Yee.

Defunct Franchises

by Andy Dolich

Ask the investors in the WFL, USFL, XFL, UFL, WUSA, ABL and the dearly departed San Francisco Bulls. How are you going to succeed when you can't even name your teams properly? Hunter Thompson on 'shrooms couldn't have selected a more inane mess of monikers. As an example, take a look back on the local UFL in 2009.

California Redwoods: The Redwoods were a team in the United Football League. They were quickly chain- sawed at AT&T Park, went to San Jose, then were uprooted and relocated to Sacramento as the Mountain Lions. They should have taken on the Golden State Warriors' first nickname, El Dorado. If nothing else the team would have had the coolest team car in all of sport.

Las Vegas Locomotives: The former UFL champs should have never left the station. I would have named them the Rat Pack. Best mascots in the league with the Chairman of the Board, Sammy and Dean--all in the form of cute little rodents. Merchandise sales would have been boffo!

Florida Tuskers: Either the Snowbirds or the Early Bird Specials would have been better. Most of their fans were retirees from the Northeast - they should have kicked off at 4:30. AARP card holders could have been back home by 8 p.m. with their official Early Bird team doggie bag from the concession stands.

New York Sentinels: What the heck is a sentinel? I would have embraced the NYC attitude. Hey, whaddya you lookin at? How about the Fugggedaboutits?

OK, starting a new business is never easy, especially if you're trying to succeed as the owner of a professional sports franchise.

Let's take a trip down Amnesia Lane to the San Francisco Bay Area Professional Sports Hall of Has Beens. My team of researchers has spent weeks looking through sports graveyards to complete the following list for your review, additions and ongoing debate.
