Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You "take in" a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running
and all the bodies flying.

Sports Pulse
Aldon Smith - 8-10-15
Dismissed 49ers defensive end Aldon Smith was reportedly having an excellent training camp.

Aldon Smith in action
Smith's four-year career with the Niners came to an abrupt end amid more criminal charges. Smith was considered one of the league's premier pass-rushers.

49ers Preseason
Report

by Dan Siegel

A few days into training camp, opinions varied widely on the 49ers' prospects for success this season. Many pundits, particularly those in the national media, predict disaster. Veteran players, including Joe Staley and Vernon Davis, say the team is in great shape under new head coach Jim Tomsula, and that despite former coach Jim Harbaugh's success, players had become weary of him.

But with the departure of star pass rusher Aldon Smith, fired after yet another arrest, the team's prospects for 2015 may have dimmed beyond hope. Smith's return after missing most of 2014 on suspension was one of the few projected bright spots on a defense decimated by retirements and free agency. None of the other outside linebackers -- Ahmad Brooks, Aaron Lynch, Corey Lemonier and rookie Eli Harold -- have demonstrated anything close to Smith's explosive ability to disrupt other teams' offenses.

The 49ers could win 11 games this year -- or lose 11. Their success will depend on how the following questions are answered. My predictions are included.

*  Will Colin Kaepernick become a top-tier quarterback? Prediction: yes. Kaepernick has the physical tools to be a star, and his determination to improve his throwing mechanics, pitch selection and time management promises success.

*  Will the running game survive the departure of Frank Gore? Prediction: probably. Carlos Hyde, Reggie Bush and Kendall Hunter have the ability to match and even exceed Gore's 2014 yardage, but no one will replace the heart and determination his leadership brought to the Niners.

*  Will Vernon Davis return to pre-2014 form? Prediction: definitely. He is healthy and determined to leave his Harbaugh-induced funk behind.

*  Will the offensive line overcome the losses of Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati? Prediction: unlikely. The OL is my big worry. It was not good last year, surrendering the third most sacks in the NFL. Davis was its best player, but Iupati was injured and had a poor season. To succeed in 2015, center Daniel Kilgore must overcome an off-season injury, and two starters must emerge from the group of Marcus Martin (who filled in well when Kilgore was injured last year), tackles Erik Pears and Trent Brown, and interior linemen Brandon Thomas, Joe Looney and Dillon Farrell. Creating a stable unit in training camp will be key.

*  Can the defensive line overcome the losses of Justin Smith and Ray McDonald? Prediction: no. Smith is irreplaceable, but the unit should be good enough. Ian Williams is a superior nose tackle if he avoids the injuries that sidelined him the last two years. A deep group including Glenn Dorsey, Quinton Dial, Darnell Dockett, Tony Jerod-Eddie and Tank Carradine should insure effective D-line play.

*  Can the team replace inside linebacker Patrick Willis? Prediction: definitely not. The loss of the all-time all-star and his injury replacement of last year, Chris Borland, will hurt. But if NaVorro Bowman recovers from the injury that sidelined him in 2014 and a capable starter emerges from among Michael Wilhoite (who started last year), Nick Moody, Phillip Wheeler and Desmond Bishop, the unit will be competent, if not spectacular.

*  Will the team field capable corners? Prediction: ??? Like the O-line, this unit has more questions than answers. The departures of Tarrell Brown (before last season) and 2014 14-game starters Perrish Cox and Chris Culliver leaves the team choosing among Tramaine Brock (injured most of last season), Shareece Wright (imported from San Diego), and 2014 draftees Dontae Johnson, Keith Reaser and Kenneth Acker. Good luck!

Get ready for an interesting season.

Kenny Stabler 8-10-15
Kenny Stabler was a winner who garnered much national attention.

Madden & Stabler - 8-10--15
Raiders coach John Madden and quarterback Stabler were a winning combination. The irrepressible QB would guide his Raiders to many an improbable victory, culminating in the Super Bowl XI rout of Fran Tarkenton's Vikings.

Kenny Stabler:
Put Him in the Hall Now!

by Chris Eaton

Ken Stabler was a Hall of Fame quarterback. There, I said it, and I challenge anyone to tell me why "the Snake" is not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His career speaks for itself.

It's a shame Stabler didn't get into the Hall while he was alive, to enjoy and share that moment with not just his family, kids and grandkids but hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide, many of whom met Stabler and others, not so lucky, who only knew his on-field heroics.

Stabler never promoted himself or argued for induction. If it happened, it happened. During the course of his lifetime, I had many conversations with him about the Hall. If you brought up Joe Namath, he'd tell you how much Namath meant to the AFL and the AFL-NFL merger. He said that you could not compare the two, and always insisted that Namath was a great addition to the Hall of Fame.

If you brought up his feud with Al Davis over the years, he would tell you all the great things Davis did, and take half the blame for allowing things to get to where they got.

I was there when he returned to Oakland for the first time as a non-player and met with Davis a few years back. He was so happy to have finally put that behind him. I never heard him speak badly or negatively about anyone. He was the classiest person I have ever met. When confronted by fans for autographs he'd say, "I'll sign a gum wrapper with a golf pencil." If you asked him for anything, he'd respond, "I'd be happy to." He said his daddy always told him that when they stop asking for an autograph you knew you were in trouble.

The Snake would never have promoted himself for the Hall of Fame. It just wasn't his nature. But sports fans should know what he accomplished, and they should be writing to sportswriters right now to get this greatest of Raiders quarterbacks into the Hall as fast as possible.

Here is a website petition people can sign to support Stabler for the Pro Football Hall of Fame:
