And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.

Not all holes, or games, are created equal."

"It breaks your heart.  It is designed to break your heart.  The game begins in spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone."

~ A. Bartlett Giamatti

Seventh Commissioner of Major League Baseball

President of Yale University

Memorable Sports Moment
Robin Williams

   Ira Klein

Robin Williams

--Ira Klein

I have attended hundreds of charity fundraising events with my company, CharityWorks. On such occasions, it is not unusual to cross paths with celebrities, entertainers and athletes. The time between setup and the actual event leaves plenty of time to speak with these luminaries away from the crowds and cameras, which is typical of the events themselves.

It was at one such event that I met Robin Williams, who at the time was one of our country's most celebrated actors and comedians. As I approached Robin, he noted my height (6', 7") and, comically feigning fright, he asked me, "What can a mere mortal like me do for you, O Giant One?"

"Mr. Williams?" I stammered.

"Yes, O Giant One?"

"You can call me Ira. I've always enjoyed your comedy, acting and spontaneity. I was wondering: how long does it take you to come up with one of your routines?"

Still cowering in fright and without any thought whatsoever, he responded, "It takes a lifetime, my friend, a lifetime." And with that he straightened up and shook my hand.

Like many of us, I was saddened when I heard of Williams' death. I believe his humor and acting touched everyone who watched television or went to the movies. I have never heard a single negative comment uttered about Robin Williams. Like the assassination of President Kennedy and the bombing of the World Trade Centers, I will always remember where I first heard the news of the passing of Robin Williams.

We've asked Robin for dozens of autographs and he was hounded everywhere he went, but he would always find the time to sign and talk with his fans. His legacy will forever be immortalized on the screen and in our hearts. He made us all laugh and even in passing, made us think of the manner in which we all see and react to the disabilities of others. RIP Robin Williams.

At 6 feet, 7 inches, Ira Klein stands alone as the largest name in the sports memorabilia industry. Starting in college, he worked for a sports marketing firm owned by Howard Cosell and fondly remembers as Cassius Clay joked and fought his way to the heavyweight championship. Ira went on to own numerous sports memorabilia retail stores, publish Legends magazine and held hundreds of signings with celebrities and sports personalities he represented. Ira currently owns CharityWorks (charityworks.net), a consignment company for live and silent auctions, as well as Memorabilia4less ( Memorabilia4Less.com).
