Memorable Sports Moment
Bruce Macgowan - Heidi image

The Heidi Game

Bruce Macgowan

I first really started going to a lot of Bay Area pro sports events when I turned 16 and got my driver's license. Having the mobility to go to the Oakland Coliseum and Arena, Candlestick Park, San Francisco's downtown Civic Auditorium and the Cow Palace (where the Warriors would play many of their games), meant my dad didn't have to go with me if he didn't have the time or the inclination.

But Dad went to many games with me, and one of my favorite memories is of a game that he and I attended back in November 1968. It became known as the Heidi Game, and it was one of the most memorable contests ever played in the American Football League of the 1960s.

That year the Raiders were coming off their first AFL championship and appearance in Super Bowl II. (They got hammered 33-14 by Vince Lombardi's last great Green Bay Packers team). Oakland was being challenged in the AFL's old Western Conference by the rival Kansas City Chiefs, who had stars such as lineman Buck Buchanan, linebacker Willie Lanier, quarterback Lenny Dawson and wide receiver Otis Taylor. The Raiders roster was also replete with great stars, such as defensive back Willie Brown, center Jim Otto and sticky-fingered Hall of Fame receiver Fred Biletnikoff.

But on this day Oakland had its hands full with the New York Jets, who were the class of the old AFL. Quarterback Joe Namath was just 26 years old, in his prime and not yet crippled by knee injuries. Running backs Emerson Boozer and Matt Snell were a tough, smart and elusive tandem in the backfield. Wily old veteran wide receiver Don Maynard was one of the best pass catchers in the game. Defensive back Johnny Sample, a former Baltimore Colt, was a brash, loudmouth youngster who backed up his words with nasty hits and shutdown coverage.

We sat in the north end zone for this game, in an area that is still full of crazy, wild Raider fans whenever the Silver and Black take the field. The notorious Black Hole is on the south side, directly opposite of where we were. In those days the Raiders were just starting to sell out every game and although the fans were passionate and probably as savvy as the hard-cores of today, there was no Black Hole. Just a lot of noisy, spirited East Bay fans who loved their team.

I remember the game that day was also a bit zany. The old AFL featured a lot of passing, and it was not uncommon to see final scores of 45-42. On this day, Namath and the Raiders quarterback, Daryl "Mad Bomber" Lamonica, put on quite a show. New York led 32-29 with under two minutes to go after the Jets' veteran kicker Jim Turner booted a 32-yard field goal.

At this point the game had run over its allotted three hours, and back on the East Coast it was now prime time, 7 p.m., and the children's TV special Heidi was scheduled to start. Some well-intentioned but misinformed studio engineer or executive decided to pull the plug on the game for East Coast viewers, having decided the game was all but over. So all New York area fans missed what happened next.

You may have heard the story, but I'll summarize it for you. Lamonica hooked up with rookie running back Charlie Smith (a hometown kid from Oakland), who caught a short swing pass and turned it into a 48-yard TD catch and run that put Oakland ahead 36-32 with about a minute to go. On the ensuing kickoff, Raiders kicker Mike Eisheid booted a low-bouncing knuckleball that befuddled Jets return man Dick Christy. Christy went to corral the ball and collided with one of his teammates, who unwittingly knocked the ball loose. During a wild scramble the ball was kicked and knocked backward toward the Jets end zone, where a wave of Raiders eagerly fell on it. The guy who ended up with it was an obscure player named Preston Ridlehuber, and his name will forever be part of the lore of great comeback wins for Oakland. Ridlehuber, in his exuberance, threw the ball up into the south end zone in celebration. Oakland won, 43-32.

In the delirium that ensued, none of us had any idea, nor did we care in the least, that the folks watching back east had missed the crazy final few minutes. It was a good thing the Raiders did win that game, because they needed it to tie the always tough Chiefs atop the conference standings with a 12-1-1 record. That meant a playoff game to decide who would go to the AFL title game against the Eastern champion New York Jets. The Raiders easily won that game over the Chiefs, 41-6. Unfortunately, in the AFL title game the New York Jets won the rematch a week later at cold and windy Shea Stadium, 27-23, to earn the right to go to their first Super Bowl. New York followed up the big win over the Raiders with a stunning 16-7 upset of the heavily favored NFL Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, giving Namath the legendary status that he still enjoys to this day.
