"Losing streaks are funny. If you lose at the beginning (of the season), you get off to a bad start. If you lose in the middle of the season, you're in a slump.

If you lose at the end, you're choking."

~Gene Mauch

MLB second baseman and manager

(1925-2005)

"That's baseball, and it's my game. Y'know, you take your worries to the game, and you leave 'em there. You yell like crazy for your guys. It's good for your lungs, gives you a lift,

and nobody calls the cops. Pretty girls, lots of them.

~Humphrey Bogart

American actor and widely regarded as a cultural icon

(1899-1975)

"Can't anything be done about calling these guys student athletes? That's like referring to Attila the Hun's
cavalry as weekend warriors."
~Russell Baker
Two-time American Pulitzer Prize-winning writer known for satirical commentary and self-critical prose

A Memorable Sports Moment

Just to let you know!

It was a baseball cap giveaway night. The first 10,000 fans would receive a cap upon admission. I had bought a block of 10 tickets. One of the ticket holders couldn't make it. I was going to be paid for the ticket. I said he'd have to pay only if I couldn't sell it. I tried to sell it on the steps leading up to the Coliseum. A plainclothes security guy came up to me and advised me I could not sell the ticket and gave me a card.

  Robert Flammia Mo Selling card

As the proud owner of one of these items, about the size of a business card, I will testify that if you're handed one when you're trying to sell an extra ticket, even when not scalping, the ordinance can be enforced very strongly.

I continued trying to sell the ticket. A potential buyer arrived. Before I could make the sale, I was busted and taken into custody. Security at the Coliseum can only take you into custody. It is the Oakland police that do the arresting and take you downtown for booking. I was taken to a holding cell, where my company was a couple of highly inebriated cellmates. I'm not sure where exactly the holding cell is, but, trust me, there is one there for you when you get out of line.

The Oakland police officer saw the reason why the other two were in custody. He asked what I was doing there. "Trying to sell a ticket," I said.

"One?" he asked.

He let me go, letting me know it could have cost me a trip downtown as well as a $500 fine. "Turn the ticket in and get your cap if there are any left," he said. (There were none left.)

I missed the first inning of the ballgame, but did survive to tell this story.

Moral of the story? I don't know. What I did learn is even with good and fair intentions, the owners of baseball don't want you messing with their potential profit.
