"Three years ago at dusk on a spring evening, when the sky was a Robin's-egg blue and the wind as soft as a day-old chick, I was sitting on the verandah of my farm home in eastern Iowa when a voice very clearly said to me, "If you build it, he will come."

~Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella

"I always turn to the sports section first. The sports page records people's accomplishments; the front page has nothing

but man's failures."

~Earl Warren

American jurist and politician, 14th chief justice of the United States and the 30th governor of California

(1891-1974)

"The clock doesn't matter in baseball. Time stands still or moves backward. Theoretically, one game could go on forever. Some seem to."

A Memorable Sports Moment

The Finley 's dynasty days in Oakland

On the night of Oct. 17, 1974, nearly 50,000 euphoric A's fans jammed the Oakland Coliseum and roared with full-throated approval as their wildest dreams - and those of the team's unlikely leaders, an insurance salesman turned entrepreneur and a former high school principal - came true.

The Oakland A's, that talented but turbulent dynasty of mustachioed, long-haired rebels, had just defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers four games to one, making their mark on baseball history by winning their third consecutive World Series, a feat only the fabled New York Yankees have matched.

Who could be responsible for unleashing such a colorful, motley crew on baseball's gray, staid world? Charlie Finley, insurance salesman turned millionaire A's owner, and his cousin Carl Finley, educator turned front-office hand who always steadied the franchise and its mercurial owner.

I am Nancy Finley, Carl's daughter, and I was there at the Coliseum on that historic night in 1974, just as I was for so many A's ballgames on so many other nights.

Nearly 40 years after the last World Series title during the Finley-led A's dynasty, that night is but one of many memories that come flooding back to me each time I visit the Oakland Coliseum. In the 22 years that my father served as an A's team executive, I practically was raised at the ballpark - first, at Kansas City Municipal Stadium, and then at the Coliseum after the A's moved to Oakland in 1968.

I remember the mid-1960s in Kansas City, where Charlie and Dad quietly sowed the seeds of a dynasty by signing Jim "Catfish" Hunter, Reggie Jackson, John "Blue Moon" Odom, Rollie Fingers and many other young prospects. I recall Dad and Charlie hanging out at the ballpark with President Harry S. Truman, who by then had retired to his Missouri home. And I remember the mischievous look Charlie got whenever he saw "Charlie O." - the mule that Missouri Gov. Warren Hearnes had given to Charlie, who then made the animal the team mascot.

I also remember my father, Carl, doing the work of 10 people while running the A's threadbare front office in both Kansas City and Oakland. Dad embraced Oakland, where we lived for several years near Lake Merritt. When I wasn't in class at Oakland High School, I was helping Dad at the Coliseum, where he spent most of his time. He was Charlie's partner and sounding board on just about every A's decision, big and small, and he steered Charlie toward his best innovations.

And Charlie Finley itched to innovate. At his best, Charlie was a visionary. He saw possibilities that others didn't. He built a baseball dynasty from scratch, converting the laughingstock A's into perennial World Series champs with little more than guile, bravado and his legendary eye for spotting talent with a winner's heart.

And the Finleys didn't just win; they did it all with gusto, putting A's players in uniforms with eye-catching, bright colors: Fort Knox gold, Kelly green and wedding-gown white, while advocating for World Series night games, the designated hitter and interleague play - all of which baseball fiercely resisted, then eventually adopted.

Each time spring rolls around, it's impossible for me not to reminisce about 1963-1985, the years Dad spent in the A's organization. (Charlie owned the team from 1960-80.)

I am very proud of Carl Finley and Charlie Finley and the lasting contributions they made to Major League Baseball. Their time in the game, capped by the Athletics' 1972-74 World Series dynasty, was an amazing ride filled with unforgettable games and legendary ballplayers, all a colorful part of baseball lore and Oakland sports history.
