Lessons from the Macedonian Call
by Calvin Landrus, SRCFC National Director
In a few days, a team of Solid Rockers from the USA and Mexico will be heading to Cuba to be a witness for Christ through climbing. It all began with Maikel Gomez, who soon after becoming a member of SRCFC, began and continued to ask if Solid Rock could come to Cuba.
His request prompted me to recall the Macedonian Call that the Apostle Paul received in Acts 16:6-10. In that passage, there are some important truths about God's leading in regards to evangelism that I would like to highlight for you.
The passage reads: "Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to. So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas. During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us." After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them."
The first truth when it comes to evangelism is that the initiative lies with the Christian. Preceding this, the team had seen great growth in the town of Lystra. Did they sit on their success? No, they went to the next most logical place. We must do the same; take initiative and step towards the obvious opportunity or person.
The second truth is that we must let God guide. Back in the day, cars didn't have power steering. So to change the direction of the tires of a stationary car was nearly impossible. However, when the car started to move, steering became easy. That's what happened here! He took the next step in the path ahead. But the Holy Spirit did not want him to go there, and so he shut the door. When we are witnessing, we need to be ready to change course or accept that some are not ready to hear the message at this time.
The final truth for this is that when God does guide us to give witness, by visions, circumstances, good sense, prophetic gifts, the counsel of others or other means, it is a blessing from God for the ones that we share with. In Paul's vision, the Macedonia man begs for them to come and HELP! Think of a time when someone truly helped you. Wasn't that a blessing? The enemy often twists the natural pressure we feel when we are sharing our faith to make us feel like what we are doing is not helpful. Reject that and walk in the bold confidence of our Lord (I'm preaching to myself here) in God's calling on us to be His witnesses.
With all that said about our role in evangelism, we need to be careful to always uphold that without God at work, no amount of effort on our part will accomplish anything eternal. The first step is always to cover our witnessing efforts in prayer. Please be praying for those climbers in your life who need Christ.
Also, I mentioned above the climbing mission trip to Cuba. Many have answered the call. Now, we desperately need your prayer for this trip! Trip Report: DBU Rock Climbing Gym Outreach E-Rock Climbing Retreat
By Josh Hughes (josh.hughes@yahoo.com)
Over the weekend in November, Austin Locals who minister to Austin-area Climbers and members of the Dallas Baptist University Rock Climbing Gym Outreach Ministry merged together for a weekend of climbing at Enchanted Rock State Park. Accompanying the groups on the trip were Nate and Sarah Moore, Climbing Chaplains and Outreach Directors for SRCFC, who acted as instructors, guides, and friends.
As members arrived to the campsite late in the evening, the trip was kicked off with conversing around an open fire, tossing around a lighted frisbee in the dark, and roasting marshmallows. For those that had never met, the night was spent getting to know each other, while those that previously met caught up on life before hitting the sack.
As the sun rose, breakfast was made while Holland Greig, the lead organizer of the Austin group, lead a morning devotional. Following the devo, Nate and Sarah shared with the group the basics of climbing culture, the absolute necessity of Christian climbers willing to develop relations with other climbers and share their faith, and what their own lives look like as Climbing Chaplains. Camp was then torn down and packed up as the group moved its way on to the climbing areas.
The rest of the day was spent on the granite rock where Nate and Sarah helped the less experienced get a good hold on climbing outdoors while the seasoned climbers challenged themselves with some difficult crack climbs. After a good 7 hours of climbing, the sun started to set and so came the end of the trip. The group worked its way back to the vans, said their good-byes and departed to finish off a great weekend.
