Health & Wellness News
JUNE 2015

This month we are focusing on Men's Health.

Statistically women are 33% more likely than men to visit a doctor.  Men tend to ignore their health until there is a serious issue, while women seem to be more preventative with their health.  These differences have detrimental effects on our men.  Statistics are still showing that men also die younger than women, and that men require more heart surgeries, back surgeries, knee surgeries and pain medication than women.  Men wait until they are completely broken before seeking medical care which results in the most invasive form of treatments for men (i.e. surgery, injections, side-effect causing medication and more).  However, if they were to seek medical care from a less invasive practitioner like a Chiropractor, Acupuncturist, or Massage Therapist at the first sign of pain or injury, resolution could be found without side effects and/or surgery!  Not to mention the benefit of preventing the injury or illness from getting worse.

Ladies! We need you to help your men get the care they need.  Read the men's health information below and take advantage of our Fathers Day Specials to get your men into our wellness center.  They might grumble at first, but they will definitely thank you for helping them live longer and stay stronger!  Love is an action!  Health is a Priority!

Until our next adjustment...

Men's Health By The Numbers

The Men's Health Network (MHN) reports that men die at higher rates than women from the top 10 causes of death:

  • heart disease
  • cancer
  • stroke
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • accidents
  • pneumonia & influenza
  • diabetes
  • suicide
  • kidney disease
  • chronic liver disease & cirrhosis
According to Jean Bonhomme, MD, MPH, and a board member of the MHN, the biggest problem that men have is not so much a specific disease, but the diseases are the result of lack of health care monitoring earlier in life.  Bonhomme places part of the blame on society in general, which expects boys to be tough and ignore pain. As people get older, however, the rules change. A little pain can get worse, or signal something more serious going on in the body. More info:  WebMD

Thankfully, it's not all bad news as many of the top 10 causes of death are preventable, and can be treated, if found early.  We encourage everyone to embrace Integrative Medicine to take charge of their own health.

The Message Of Pain

Pain is a warning sign to pay attention to, but nerves give other symptoms of imbalance besides just pain. Nerves control your muscles, the functioning of your organs, glands, and your senses - these areas of the body have a long list of symptoms of imbalance and dysfunction.

As your nerves regulate and control the function of different areas of your body, symptoms of dysfunction could potentially improve by correcting the related area in your spine. Chiropractic care not only benefits illnesses due to functional imbalances, but serves as preventive health care.

So tune into your health by listening to the messages your body is sending and seek out care when you need it.
How To Boost Your Immune System

For many years chiropractors have noted that that spinal adjustments can help improve the overall health of an individual. Thanks to ongoing studies, there is a growing body of scientific research to support this contention.

Recent studies from several international research groups is systematically building the case that spinal manipulation appears to reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and increase the blood levels of immunoregulatory cytokines. Cytokines are small cell-signaling protein molecules that are secreted by numerous cells of the immune system and are a category of signaling molecules used extensively in intercellular communication. The accumulation of data from these studies suggests that a possible benefit of spinal manipulation is related to neuroimmunological effects.

Acupuncture has also shown to positively affect the immune system. Scientific research shows that acupuncture enhances natural killer cell activity and increases the white blood cells in the body and moderates the immune system allowing it to react swiftly and strongly to threats. Regular monthly acupuncture sessions support and strengthen immunity.

How Massage Therapy Benefits Men's Health

A 2010 study in Sweden showed that one 80-minute hand-and-foot massage significantly lowered men's heart rates, cortisol levels and insulin levels-all of which help lower stress.

Not only can massage therapy for men help alleviate stress and tension, but it's has been shown to successfully relieve neck and back pain, reduce heart rate and high blood pressure and improve athletic performance in men.  According to a 2009 study in the Clinical Journal of Pain, people with chronic neck pain reported a 55% improvement after a neck massage a week for ten weeks. For men who suffer from persistent back pain, a 2009 meta-analysis in the journal Spine noted that common massage techniques can help you relax and trigger an endorphin release that raises your threshold for pain.
  • Reduce effects of stress
  • Heal or prevent on-the-job and sports injuries
  • Relax and increase self-awareness
It's important for men to be informed that Massage Therapy offers true health benefits, in addition to relaxation. Please pass this info along.
