Health & Wellness News
MAY 2015

This month we are celebrating Mothers Day!!!

Each day at InnerMovement we care for and support moms.  With our specialty in Prenatal & Postnatal care, we are blessed every day with adorable new babies and active toddlers accompanying their moms for a spinal check-up.  Spending time with healthy babies and happy moms is truly one of our favorite parts of each day, as we continue to support them on their path toward wellness!

Our newsletter focus this month is helping to shed light on the most common health concerns mothers face.  What I witness daily is the common dis-ease that all mothers seem to experience, "putting everyone before myself-itis" and "no time for me syndrome".  If you have this or know a mom that does...please use our specials this month to come in and find a cure.  And please forward this email to the mom's you love in your life that need a little TLC as we LOVE to care for them!

Until our next adjustment...

Yours in Health,

Body & Back Aches
Pelvic Pain

As the uterus expands, women may feel aches and pains in the back, abdomen, groin area, and thighs. Many women also have backaches and aching near the pelvic bone due the pressure of the baby's head, increased weight, and loosening joints.

Chiropractic adjustments provide relief from the increased low-back pain brought on by pregnancy. Chiropractic is safe for the expectant mother and her baby, and is a great way to avoid pain medication.  According to one study, 52% of patients noticed improvements after 1 week, 70% after 2 weeks, and 85% after three months.

Some pregnant women complain of pain that runs from the lower back, down the back of one leg, to the knee or foot. This is called sciatica. It is thought to occur when the uterus puts pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Your Chiropractor can detect any imbalances in the pelvis or elsewhere in your body that could contribute to pregnancy discomfort or possible neuromusculoskeletal problems after childbirth.  According to one study, 60% of patients benefitted from spinal manipulation to the same degree as if they had undergone surgical intervention. Massage Therapy is also an optimal choice as soft tissue therapy can relieve the pressure placed on the sciatic nerve.

Chiropractors see many causes of pelvic pain in pregnancy; symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) and diastasis symphysis pubis (DSP) are just two of them.

A study at University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, New York, showed that 91% of patients had pain relief and no longer showed symptoms of Sacroiliac subluxation after a Chiropractic adjustment.
Fatigue
Sleep Issues

It's very common to feel tired, or even exhausted, during pregnancy, especially in the first 12 weeks. Now is the time to listen to your body and get the extra rest it needs.

Acupuncture is a great way to help your body balance it's "qi" (chi) and the hormonal changes associated with pregnancy.

Many women also experience issues with sleeping as they have a hard time getting comfortable.  Try sleeping on your left side and use a knee bolster.  You may also want to limit your consumption of beverages right before you go to bed.

Massage Therapy and Reflexology
are beneficial in relieving aches and pains, and will help your body relax.

Be sure to check out our special offer this month as you can enjoy both!
Heartburn & Indigestion
Morning Sickness
Nausea

Morning sickness can be of the first clues of pregnancy as well as one of the first discomforts. For many women, the happy news is combined with nausea, vomiting, and heartburn

Thankfully, Acupuncture has proven (read study here) to lessen the symptoms of morning sickness and nausea during pregnancy without medication.

Up to 80% of moms-to-be report suffering from indigestion is common during pregnancy, with up to 80 percent of moms-to-be suffering heartburn, stomach pain or discomfort, reflux, belching and bloating. Symptoms tend to worsen over time, and women who avoid taking medicine for fear of harming the developing fetus might welcome an alternative treatment.

In a Brazilian Study, heartburn was reduced by half in 75% of the women treated with acupuncture. Women receiving acupuncture also ate and slept better.
Leg Cramps
Swelling

According to Danforth's Obstetrics and Gynecology, almost 50% of all pregnant women suffer from muscle spasms in their legs, with cramping more frequent during the evening. Leg cramps may be caused by the additional weight gain and changes in your circulation. Pressure from the growing baby may also be placed on the nerves and blood vessels that go to your legs.

Some lifestyle modifications can be helpful in reducing leg cramps, muscle spasms, and swelling.  Try to get some exercise, stretch your calves, rest with your legs elevated, and schedule routine massages.

Massage Therapy for pregnant women reduces stress on weight-bearing joints, encourages blood and lymph circulation.
Recipe Of The Month
Sweet Potato & Broccoli Bowl

Ingredients

For the bowl
1 cup cooked quinoa
1 to 2 sweet potatoes, cut into 1-inch dice
1 large bundle broccoli, separated into small florets
1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil
Coarse or kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon white sesame seeds

1 teaspoon black sesame seeds

For the dressing
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
2 tablespoons white or golden miso
2 tablespoons tahini
1 1/2 tablespoons honey or agave nectar
1/4 cup rice vinegar
3 tablespoons toasted sesame oil

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Toss sweet potatoes and broccoli with olive oil, salt and pepper. Roast for 20 minutes until they start to brown, then flip and roast for another 10 to 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, prepare dressing by combining all ingredients in a blender until smooth, scraping down sides as necessary. Taste and adjust ingredients as desired.  In a small skillet, toast the sesame seeds until fragrant and set aside to use as a garnish.

Assemble bowls: Place quinoa in bowl, then pile on the roasted sweet potatoes and broccoli. Coat lightly with sesame-miso dressing and finish with toasted sesame seed duo. Serve with extra dressing on the side. (Serves 4)
