Greetings!
This month, our wellness topics speak to the health of our children and should be shared with every parent we know. The younger generation in our country faces health risks of epidemic proportions, sadly from a system that should be protecting them. American children are given more prescription medications than any other developed country and the U.S. list of recommended vaccines is larger than any other country. Unfortunately, the state of health for U.S. Children isn't topping any lists. According to the CDC, infant mortality rates are higher than most other developed countries (ranking 31st in 2012) and appears to be worsening. A Washington Post article (dated 01/09/13) shows that our infant mortality rate is twice that of countries like Japan and Sweden. Despite having the most expensive healthcare system, the United States ranks last overall compared to six other industrialized countries. Why?
This very informational edition is jam-packed with critical research and explanations on what we are doing wrong with our kids. It also gives ideas and insights into how to make some positive changes toward the health of our children. We've also included some helpful tips for clearing up Acne naturally as Acne medications are one of the most widely used prescriptions given to teenagers, despite their known risks to the liver. If you have a teen suffering from problematic skin, we now offer holistic skin care that combines topical skin treatments with Acupuncture. The treatment is also highly effective on hormonal skin issues experienced at any age and on special through October.
I hope this edition inspires each of us to rethink any and all medications and for parents to research alternatives for their children. We urge you to dedicate time to reading this edition in its entirety including our recommended links, watching the documentary films and sharing it with those you love. Until our next adjustment...
Yours in Health, Dr. Heidi & the InnerMovement Wellness Team

Documentary To Watch:
The Drugging Of Our Children
|
The Drugging Of Our Children
Documentary Film
|
Millions of US children are taking powerful mind-altering drugs, often before they're even old enough to attend school.
The number of prescriptions for psychotropic drugs for children more than doubled between 1995 and 2000. This film details the consequences of this excessive medicating of our children, with a focus on kids diagnosed with ADHD. Oftentimes the side effects of these Class 2 Narcotics are far worse than the conditions, such ADHD, for which they are prescribed. We encourage you to watch this important documentary and you can read more information HERE

Risperdal Drug Warning

Risperdal® Side Effects in Children - CBS Evening News
|
Several years ago, the FDA approved risperidone or Risperdal for the treatment of "irritability in autistic children," but the drug has serious side effects, especially for boys.
In addition to extreme weight gain and impotence in men, Risperdal may cause dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, dry mouth, heartburn, stomach pain, drowsiness, anxiety, agitation, difficulty urinating, vision problems, and insomnia.
Other adverse events reported include pituitary tumors in males, diabetes, bone loss, pancreatitis, and "galactarhea," the premature production of breast milk in both boys and girls. A number of male patients reported "Risperdal Gynecomastia", the growth of male breast tissue, which is irreversible and requires breast reduction surgery or mastectomy operations.

Treating Acne with Acupuncture
New research shows that Acupuncture is an effective treatment for Acne. 43 Acupuncture acne trials with approximately 3,500 patients was reviewed. In the studies, several types of acne were investigated: vulgaris, papulopustular, inflammatory, adolescent and polymorphic. The researchers discovered that when acupuncture is added to a therapeutic regime, it synergistically enhances the medicinal benefits of the treatment protocol and leads to superior patient outcomes.
If you or someone you know suffers from Acne or Hormonal Skin Issues, encourage them to incorporate Acupuncture into their treatment. (And it's on special at InnerMovement through October!)

Foods For Clear Skin
Your dietary choices can help keep your skin clear and healthy, along with the rest of you.
Vitamin A is especially important and can be found in dark leafy greens like kale, watercress and spinach, broccoli, carrots, sweet potatoes, and cantaloupe. Pair this with a healthy fat like avocado.
Brown rice, legumes, nuts and pumpkin seeds also help feed your skin, just as red grapes and dark berries do.
You also need some healthy Omega-3 Fatty Acids to help balance the body's essential oils, keep inflammation in check, and encourage the body's natural healing response. (Check out our Omega-3 Fish Oil supplement on special this month!)
Both green and peppermint teas make great beverage choices. And be sure to drink at least 10 glasses of filtered water every day.

Ask Dr. Heidi
Question:
"At what age can or should a child see a Chiropractor?"
Dr. Heidi:
"Birth is the best time to get a child's first spinal checkup. This very gentle visit corrects any imbalances that could have occurred during the birth process. Research shows that birth trauma from a difficult delivery, can contribute to ear infections, nursing difficulties, colic, constipation and SIDS. This is clinically documented and explained in detail HERE. Other than at birth, it is a good idea to have children screened for scoliosis, posture imbalances and spinal injury after major or minor falls, sports related injury or if the child is complaining of pain."
