Regional Mountain Trails

On Thursday, April 18, the first public meeting for the Regional Mountain Trails Master Planning was held in Boulder. The meeting was an opportunity for the 50 or so participants to express their wishes about the process to design a regional trail network and most of the people there really loved the idea. The Longmont Times-Call wrote a good article about the meeting.

There were representatives of City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, Boulder County Parks and Open Space, US Forest Service, Boulder County Transportation and Jefferson County Open Space who wanted to listen in and participate.

These listening meeting continue this week (specific locations here):

Coal Creek Canyon: Tuesday, April 23, 6:30-8 p.m.

Lyons: Wednesday, April 24, 6:30-8 p.m.

Nederland: Thursday, April 25, 6:30-8 p.m.

Southeast County (Louisville): Monday, April 29, 6-7:30 p.m.

Jamestown: Tuesday, April 30, 6:30-8 p.m.

Longmont: Wednesday, May 1, 6:30-8 p.m.

Gold Hill: Thursday, May 2, 6:30-8 p.m.

Allenspark: Tuesday, May 7, 6:30-8 p.m.

Ward: Wednesday, May 8, 6:30-8 p.m.

Eldorado Springs: Thursday, May 9, 6:30-8 p.m.

These meetings are a pretty easy way to speak your mind and also hear what other people have to say -- at this point, the agencies involved are just looking for community feedback, and will come back in a few months with a proposed path forward. We encourage Boulder County residents to attend the meetings in their community, although it is fine to attend a different meeting is your schedule doesn't accommodate their schedule.

If no one speaks up for mountain biking, mountain bikers won't be heard, so BMA put together a comprehensive "ask list" to help mountain bike supporters provide constructive feedback at the meetings so that we speak with a common voice. If you do attend one of these meetings, thanks a million, and we'd love to hear how it goes -- send us an email!

Walker Ranch Management Plan

Last weeks meeting rescheduled

The snow forced a postponement of the Walker Ranch meeting last week. The meeting is now scheduled for May 7 in the Houston Room at the Clerk and Recorder's Office, 1750 33rd Street, Boulder. The goal of the meeting is for Boulder County Parks & Open Space to present the Walker Ranch Management Draft Plan.

Unfortunately, the plan doesn't call for some of the things that BMA had advocated for, like singletrack trail links between Walker Ranch and Chapman Drive and Nederland, reworking sections of trail that are on old roadbeds to improve the quality of the user experience, expanding the trail network in areas, adding alternate lines to the main loop to add challenge for advanced trail users or to allow families to recreate together, or adding a play area/skills park at one of the trail heads, but it does call for a new plan to figure out a connection between Eldo to Walker, which is exciting.

If you ride at Walker Ranch and have input about the draft management plan, BMA would really appreciate your presence at the meeting to make our voice heard. If you can, mention some of the key points above. Thanks!
Betasso Trail Work Tuesday

betasso BMA and Boulder County Parks and Open Space (BCPOS) are kicking off another season of local trail maintenance!

Come to Betasso Preserve to work on the Link trail, a.k.a. Pipeline. This trail is eroded and the city is not happy their pipeline keeps getting exposed. We'll work to fix these issues. This work session will include a focus on learning the type of rock work needed at Betasso. We will use these skills throughout the season at posse events.
