Serving Your Community - Boulder Needs Good People!

The reasons why we live here are plentiful... and they are likely different for each of us.  We owe a debt of gratitude to the people that came before; they gave their time and energy to make Boulder County an awesome place to live.  It didn't happen by accident.

We need to continue that legacy by putting balanced, smart people in those Boards and Commissions and even City Council.  Yeah, we know what you're thinking right about now... "you must be a bit crazy to subject yourself to such endeavors".  And you may be right.  They probably thought those people were crazy that thought it was a good idea to tax ourselves for open space too.

People who volunteer their time on Board and Commissions play a vital role in our community, they shape the quality of life we all enjoy.

Here are the Boards and Commissions that have a direct impact on our public lands and recreation on them, they all have at least one seat open in 2013:

And for the ambitious/insane, there are five seats up for election next year on Boulder City Council.

Yes, it is a time commitment that many would run from, but we know there are some of you who are still reading this and are curious to learn more.  If you want to learn more, please contact Mike Barrow or Jason Vogel to hear our perspectives; Jason has served on POSAC and Mike has been dealing with these groups forever.

It takes a "special" person to compete for these positions.... are you one of them?
Remember Chapman Drive

Remember Chapman Drive? It's a 2.5 mile road that goes from the Red Lion Inn in Boulder Canyon to the top of Flagstaff Mountain. This was one of the "regional connector" trails that was left open as an opportunity for cyclists at the end of the West TSA process. The good news is that City open space recently purchased the land necessary to open this road to the public. And work on the Chapman Drive bridge is almost complete. The bad news is that the trail will initially open to only hikers and equestrians.

Bike access will require more analysis and public input on how to introduce bikes to this corridor. BMA supports staff's approach because opening the road to bike traffic has the potential to cause significant user conflict due to the large speed differentials between downhill cyclists and all other users (including uphill cyclists). BMA would like to see bikes allowed uphill on the road and downhill on a parallel singletrack trail. We'd also like to see how close we can get to connecting Chapman Drive to Walker Ranch in order to make this part of a true regional trail connector. Engaging in this conversation will require some time and effort by staff as well as encouragement from the public (that means us).

In the meantime, please spread the word that even though horses and hikers are going to get access immediately, it is going to take some time to get access for cyclists on Chapman Drive. City open space wanted to tell the cycling community about this first, so we pass this information on in good faith that we are going to get a good result from the City of Boulder. In the mean time, let's stay away from this road until we have a chance to have a real conversation with staff about how to do it right.
SmarttTrail App on the Horizon

Production of our SmartTrail app is underway - we're getting close to its launch!

SmartTrail is a mobile app that BMA is building which will allow for "real-time" trail condition updates and will showcase all the trail information we have on our website in the palm of your hand. It'll also keep folks apprised of all the BMA events, rides, activities. We've brought Karen Spies of Alquemie Studio on board to take the work of our great volunteer developers to the next level and get 'er done. We're expecting to beta test the IOS and Android versions of the app in mid-January.
