Bruce Conner has become a central figure in the evolution of new media and unconventional art forms, providing contemporary art with radical and iconic approaches. From film, photography, painting, drawing and printmaking to found object/found media appropriations Conner's unexpected drawings, sculptures, collages and assemblages defined an otherworldly state of consciousness.
Bruce Conner: It's All True is the first comprehensive retrospective of this pivotal American artist's incredible output, bringing together over 250 objects in various media, including film and video, works on paper, assemblages, photographs and photograms, performance, and more will be on view at SFMOMA October 29, 2016 – January 22, 2017 after its initial iteration at MoMA NY.

Artist's Talk:

Anthony Riggs' dramatic large-scale paintings explore a cultural kaleidoscope of competing belief systems. Employing a host of mythic figures, eastern symbolism, advertising methods and televised propaganda, the ensuing mash-up engenders new narratives in visually complex worlds.
Riggs' desire for the work is to invite an examination of the relationships between east and west, masculine and feminine, ancient and modern, science and religion. The visual feast he provides allows ample opportunity to consider these relationships and many more in light of "the near scientific thinking, environmental fear, and religious beliefs found in American mainstream culture" reflected in the paintings.

True to her previous explorations, Robin Kandel consistently examines and dissects our notions of distance and location. Her practice remains deliberately slow and meditative, creating a fluid rhythm of straight lines that layer to bring about a kinetic yet minimal optical effect. Showing over 20 new works, ranging in size, Kandel employs acrylic paints and graphite on various materials such as vintage maps and wood panels.

A Western Trip
Through October 29, 2016
On view will be six new paintings by Dana Hart-Stone, including two mural-sized works, created through the artist's continued exploration of vintage imagery and intricate patterning. Each painting featured in A Western Trip is created through the appropriation of vintage American vernacular photographs to create vivid, intricate patterns printed onto raw canvas. The repetitive use of imagery creates the feeling of a cinematic narrative, one whose story and meaning are left deliberately ambiguous. Digitally stitched together into fields of memory, the paintings pay homage to the histories of everyday people, while simultaneously recalling the collective history of the American west.
