Taos Visionaries:
A Celebration |
July 13 – 17, 2016
At various sites and venues in the historic district of Taos, the Arts Council celebrates
Taos Visionaries in visual art, poetry, literature, dance and theatre. A highlight is
a free, public symposium on Friday, July 15th at Taos Public Library. Art historians
Dr. Sharyn Udall, David Witt and Jina Brenneman present talks on New Mexico Moderns,
Taos Moderns and the next generation of Taos artists. The afternoon sessions include presentations
on Flamenco in northern New Mexico, the High Road from Santa Fe to Taos and a dramatic
reading of the play "Losing D.H. Lawrence". For tickets and reservations contact Paul Figueroa,
575-779-8579 or pcf1947@yahoo.com
"The Presence of Light" a photography show at Taos Town Hall continues through July.

Boxes of Moonlight |
This month we feature the light-boxes of owner Greg Moon. These quirky little pieces hearken back to the nostalgic subjects of his youth. There is a childlike delight in cheesy monster movies, the space race, and the cartoons of the 60s… all done in a mixed media mashup that has an additional layer due to the internal lighting of each piece. "It's been an interesting series as it's a definite departure in not only subject matter, but media and technical challenges as well." Funny, irreverent, and funky best describe the end result. Bring your sense of humor…

Mabel Dodge Luhan & Company: American Moderns and the West is a major traveling exhibition curated by MaLin Wilson-Powell
and Lois Rudnick. |
This exhibition focuses on the life of Mabel Dodge Luhan (1879-1962), who brought modernism to Taos creating a "Paris West" in the American Southwest. Luhan invited "movers and shakers" including D.H. Lawrence, Georgia O'Keeffe, Ansel Adams, John Marin, Marsden Hartley, and Paul Strand to find in northern New Mexico's physical and cultural landscapes new aesthetic and perspectives on modern life. The exhibition presents these artists in relation to Pueblo and Hispano artists, examining a unique "Southwest Modernism."
