Brothers and Sisters...
During a recent visit to Denver, Colorado where I worshiped at Saint John's Cathedral, I picked up a brochure entitled "How To Keep Advent". This Episcopalian flavored pamphlet made the following pitch for taking the season of Advent seriously:

"Sometimes people can go right through a mystery and not even know that it is there. The church knew that people needed a way to get ready to come close to and enter the Mystery of Christmas. They set aside four weeks to get ready." (Jerome Berryman)

These simple words describing the season of Advent come from the church school curriculum Godly Play. Addressed to young children, they speak to all ages of what Advent is about: getting ready to experience the mystery of the incarnation of God in Christ. The church maintains that Christmas does not begin until Christmas Eve when we celebrate the actual birth--after all, we might go to a baby shower, but no one sends balloons, flowers, or congratulations cards to a couple until after their new baby is born! We are not good at waiting. We join the rest of our society in wanting gratification--and wanting it now.

How might we put the brakes on the "Christmas machine" so we can prepare for the wonder and joy of Christmas?"

In essence, our culture wants little to do with the season of Advent. We want our Christmas and we want it ASAP! But there is great value in taking time to prepare well for the birth of a Savior...who is Christ the Lord! So let me encourage you to make some commitments during this season of hope and expectation. I encourage you and your family to commit to three vital ingredients for a "holy Advent".

(1) WORSHIP...
at Lord of Life - Be present every weekend to experience the joyous preparation that occurs around song, prayer, word and meal with others who are journeying with you through this season of anticipation.

At home - Take time throughout the week to light candles, with or without a wreath, and share devotions provided at church or found on-line with your family - "Creator of the Stars of Night" (www.luthersem.edu) or "The Best of All Kid's Advent Devotional" - both in our narthex.

With other Christian sisters and brothers - Join other Christians who have scheduled worship opportunities where you will be welcomed as "fellow travelers to the manger". We have been invited to the following services; just to name a few.
  • Sunday, December 6 at 4 PM - Holy Eucharist RC Church's Advent Christmas Concert
  • Sunday, December 6 at 5:30 PM - Orthodox Church of the Holy Cross' Advent Vespers
  • Sunday, December 13 at 7 PM - Christ Presbyterian Church's Christmas Vesper Service
  • Sunday, December 13 at 7 PM - Medford United Methodist Church's Choir Candlelight Service
  • Monday, December 21 at 7 PM - Marlton United Methodist Church's Longest Night Service (a special service for those struggling with forced merriment in the face of loss, grief, and illness)
(2) FELLOWSHIP WITH PEOPLE OF FAITH...
If you were present for the "Greening of the Church" or "Advent Family Night", you know how important it is to gather with people of "like hearts and minds". So be sure to make the effort to join us on Sunday, Dec 13 at 4 PM as we sing Christmas carols to our members and friends at Allenwood Mobile Estates and Leisuretowne or come experience an Advent - Women's Retreat on Saturday, Dec 12 (9:30 AM - 3 PM) or the Women's Ministry Christmas Gathering on Wednesday, Dec 16 at 6 PM or the PEP Christmas Luncheon on Thursday, Dec 17 at 11:30 AM. And if you truly want to experience the "joy of Christmas" during Advent, plan on attending The Grace Place's Christmas Program on Friday, Dec, 18 at 6:30 PM...you'll love the kid's version of the mystery of Christmas!
(3) GIVING GIFTS THAT REFLECT THE TRUE "REASON FOR THE SEASON"
So take another tag from the Giving Tree and help provide a blessed Christmas for kids and families who are struggling to "make ends meet" this holiday season. Select alternative gifts to share with loved ones through the use of the ELCA's Good Gifts catalog - "gifts that grow the church, fight hunger, and transform lives"...check their website for great gift ideas www.ELCA.org/goodgifts). Support the ministry of the Hope Alive Clinic in Haiti (www.hopealiveclinic.org), Penny Miller's Sewing Academy (check to "Penny Miller Sewing Academy" & put in box #32 at church) or The Fuller Center for Housing in the Jersey Pines (www.fullercenter.org/newjerseypines). And if you give a gift to your family or friends, why not choose one that is faith-based, like a nativity scene (we just did this with all three of our kids by giving them a marvelous hand carved set of figures from Indonesia) or an ornament or banner that celebrates "the greatest gift ever given...Christ the Lord!"

Last Sunday while many of you were sharing in the excitement of Advent Family Night at Lord of Life, I was attending a Service of Advent Lessons and Carols at the aforementioned cathedral. A portion of the opening prayer for that worship experience speaks volumes about our need to observe a holy Advent...I close with these words.

"As we meet to celebrate anew the coming of God's Kingdom, we hear revealed the mystery of God's loving purpose for us--how that when we were far off, God met us in his Son and brought us home; how God humbled himself to take our human nature, that we might share the divine glory. Let us in this holy season reflect on the coming of Christ who brings light to the world. Let us leave behind the darkness of sin, walk in the light that shines on our path, and renew within ourselves the hope of glory to which he beckons us.

Message from Barbara Wagner - President

Recently, Doug Hess spoke with the congregation regarding our financial situation. At the congregation meeting back in January, it was voted to use monies from the building fund if needed to meet our budget. This has been the trend for the past 3 years.

Throughout this year the finance team has been keeping close watch on our spending, but we had to use the building fund once again to make sure the staff received their salaries and to ensure the ministries at Lord of Life would continue.

We are now at a point where most of the building fund has been depleted. In fact, we do not expect to have any money in the building fund at the end of the year. Actual expenditures have outpaced giving by approximately $60,000 in 2015.

In order to continue our ministry here we have to face several decisions ahead. The only way to pay staff and balance a budget in 2016 is to adjust the church staffing. The council has held several special meetings to review the situation - some meetings with the Bishop.

In conclusion, this congregation cannot afford two pastors indefinitely. Simply put, the giving has not met the expenses associated with two pastors. The Council continues to meet regularly and are not presenting any decision right now; however, we do anticipate having to make some serious decisions in the near future.

God brought this congregation here almost 30 years ago, and if we all pray and act on His will this congregation will be here for another 30 years and more. Please pray about this situation, and PLEASE share your ideas with the Council so we all can make the best decisions for the future of Lord of Life.

Join us for ADVENT

Elementary Sunday School
Dec 6 - Dec 13 - Dec 20
The Magi were on a quest - following a star to find the child king foretold in prophecy. Along their journey, they encountered both the dark and the light, both good and bad. In the end they met Jesus, the true star of their trip, and light of the world.
Join the quest each Sunday in Advent at 9:30 and during the 10:30 service.

Volunteer Spotlight

Greeters and ushers at Lord of Life are our ambassadors at the door. They serve God as representatives of the church to those who come to worship - members and visitors. Of those attending any church's service, it has been estimated that 1 out of 7 come with a heavy burden. The warm greetings of these ambassadors can serve as a faith lifter. Visitors receive their first impression of Lord of Life from these dedicated volunteers - and that may be a deciding factor in making a visitor a regular worshiping member.

Please join me in thanking and praying for our greeters - Elle & Phil Brockington, Alan & Cheryl Dennison, Barbara & Bob Urban, Ellen Wilen, Myra & Tim Bell, Bob & Gloria Brosious, Carolyn & Jim Cuviello, Bob & Donna Donohue, Chris Kulina, Jesse & Joan Roberts, Kitty Earle, Beverly Evans, Peg Gibson, Carolyn & Ken Hartman, Fran Jones, and Ed Hourihan; and for our ushers - Dave & Jean Audus, Carol & Al Flood, Elle & Phil Brockington, Nancy & Dave Curl, Tim & Myra Bell, Linda & Craig Baechler, Steve Vorwerk, Rick Osman, Nancy Drew, Marge Finley, Floss Nicklas, the Leach Family, John & Jack Welling, Ken Hartman, Tom Hall, Paul Horner, Rick Stevens, Paul Molnar, Brian Miller, Bill Rudderow, Frank Humphreys, Barb & Larry Godfrey, Doug & Spencer Hess, and Nick Yannessa.

Is God calling you to serve in these ministry areas? Please contact Debbie Chromeck for Greeters and Barbara Wagner for Ushers. We thank Debbie and Barbara for their dedicated and loving service.   Debbie-debbie@lordlife.us   Barb-babswags@comcast.net
