Saint Paul writes, "Finally beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is
pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything
worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things you have learned and received and
heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you." (NRSV - Philippians 4:8-9)
Brothers and Sisters...
As one of your pastors, I get to see and experience numerous examples of how blessed we are at Lord of Life. That's not to say that we don't have any challenges as a congregation; like financial shortfalls, aging buildings and graying membership, concerns for our ministry "to, with, and among" children, youth, and families. But day in and day out I can see the Spirit of the Lord guiding and inspiring our ministry. In addition to all the ongoing facets of our life together, like worship, study, fellowship, and caring for each other, in the last 30 days I've been truly blessed by the following moments in mission and ministry when I...
...officiated at the wedding of Lance Patterson and Briana Knoble in our sanctuary (the first wedding in our building in almost 3 years!). The excited couple exchanged their vows before family and friends and were surrounded by the beauty of mums, daisies, and joyous organ and piano music provided by Rick Krause (so much nicer than the sounds often provided by DJs). The bride was walked down the aisle by her uncle and the groom's uncle (Pastor Viking Dietrich - longtime ELCA missionary in Senegal and now pastor of a congregation near Williamsport, Pennsylvania) read a lesson and shared a beautiful prayer of blessing at the wedding reception. We prayed that the couple would experience God's blessing on their wedding day and throughout their married life.
...traveled to The Mad Batter restaurant in Cape May, New Jersey, where our own Mary Stroup exhibited many of her paintings (Ask her about Buttercup). It was in that old Victorian hotel that I was joined by 7 other Lord of Life members who took the opportunity to support Mary (and George!). How true it is that God continues to use people like Mary to further the creative process!
...attended a New Jersey Synod Bishop's Convocation that focused on the issue of Racism and was entitled "Building Bridges and Breaking Down Walls". This gathering was led by a Presbyterian pastor who serves two Latino congregations in Plainfield, New Jersey, (one English speaking and the other Spanish speaking) and also is a member of the faculty at Princeton Theological Seminary. While there I met two recently ordained pastors in our synod, Jen McClellan in Allendale (who enthusiastically shared a new resource with me from the Discipleship Team) and Kathleen Harris in Egg Harbor City (who a week later invited me to help her lead worship at the memorial service for one of her parishioners who happened to be the mother of one of our members). Throughout the convocation, I experienced the joy of other clergy and associates in ministry who are colleagues serving the Lord in their own unique contexts.
...walked with 10 women on the boardwalk in Ocean City, New Jersey, on a Sunday morning as we joined hundreds of others who were "making strides against breast cancer". Our Lord of Life Ladies team raised over $1000 for research and marched in solidarity with victims, survivors, and their families and friends. We completed our mission by sharing breakfast and fellowship around the tables at Uncle Bill's Pancake House. I even got to wear a PINK sweatshirt for the first time ever...but I'm sure it won't be the last time!
...labored alongside Ed, Jack, and Rick from LOL (and Pastor Gary Stiegler) during a Friday morning "Brothers for Others" mission project at The Charlesworth Hotel & Restaurant in Fortescue, New Jersey, as we built a handicapped ramp that will help this iconic Delaware Bay landmark to provide a warm welcome to residents and visitors who are supporting the long term recovery efforts that continue to follow the ravages of Super Storm Sandy that occurred over 3 years ago! Be sure to read the letter from Pastor Stiegler found at this link.

...worshiped with over 80 children, youth and adults (46 from Lord of Life) at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Hainesport where we celebrated the Reformation and Confirmation Ministry at a service fondly known as RefCon. What a joy it was to see our congregation provide the musical leadership for this kid friendly service of worship that followed a "good old" cover dish supper. We even got to see Pastor Sue reprise her role as Katie Luther when she encouraged Dr. Martin Luther (Pastor Jost) to "go on a Diet of Worms"!
...savored the sounds of jazz in our sanctuary as the Dave Stryker Trio regaled us with fabulous jazz rhythms and improvisations in the first offering in this concert series. Jared's organ stylings were heart felt and pleasing. Sylvia's drumming was solid and steady. Dave's jazz licks on the electric guitar were soulful. We got to hear compositions by The Association, Earth, Wind and Fire, Herbie Hancock, Curtis Mayfield, The Fifth Dimension, and Glen Campbell...and all for only $10. Circle your calendar for the next 2 concerts on November 20th and December 11th!
...celebrated All Saints Sunday by observing the lighting of candles and the ringing of a hand bell to remember the life and witness of 9 members of Lord of Life and other friends of the parish who are part of the Church Triumphant. We also lifted up the 15 children who have been baptized into the Good Friday / Easter faith in the last year. Between services I also shared the leadership of our Adult Forum with Pastor Sue as 66 adults gathered to discuss the differences and similarities between Lutheran and Roman Catholic Christians. And following our second service I dined on a truly tasty meal prepared by Linda and Phillip Jagiela and then joined 10 members and went across the street to Allenwood Mobile Estates to rake and blow leaves for two members and one friend of the church..."God's Work...Our Hands". What a busy and blessed day!
Sisters and brothers, God is using the ministry of Lord of Life to draw all of us closer to "the heart and mind of Christ!" What an honorable, just, pure, God-pleasing, commendable way of living in the kingdom of God. Be sure to join us in the days, weeks, months, and years ahead. God has great things in store for us!
Autumn Blessings,
Your Brother in Christ, Pastor David Jones

Stewardship at Lord of Life
|
"Thank You!"
"We Are Lord of Life!"
"What is Happening?"
What does all of the above have to do with Stewardship and this Fall? The Stewardship Team started rolling out this year's Campaign with a learning session & Fellowship time on Sunday, October 4th between the worship services. The learning session discussion was based around the Mutual Ministry questionnaire from this past spring. This year's Stewardship Program will be one of "Personal Contact" using group meetings with all of the families of Lord of Life. These will be a one hour session around refreshments, two way conversation and discussion.
We are asking for families/members to sign up for one of many sessions that will be held between now and the end of November. We are trying to accommodate all parishioners and their time schedules so we have the remaining sessions:
- Sunday - November 8 at 7 PM
- Tuesday - November 10 at 7 PM
- Wednesday - November 18 at 1 PM and 7 PM
- Sunday - November 22 at 12 PM and 7 PM
Sessions will be held at the Lord of Life Fellowship Hall.
Please sign up for the session that you want to attend. Sign up sheets on the Narthex.
If there are any questions please contact Doug Hess, doughess@aol.com, or Rick Osman, ossie3rick@aol.com.

Trips occur in late June or early July and service opportunities vary from serving meals to the hungry, gleaning in farm fields, moving furniture, collecting and sorting donations which become supplies for everyday life for recipients, to writing welcome notes to refugees etc. If you believe you have the heart and ability to lead this vital ministry, please let Lu Hourihan know or speak to one of the Pastors.

LifeLines Editor(s) needed!
|
Still need an editor for the Lifelines for 2016. There is still time to get acquainted with the process this year. The newsletter is edited online with only a web browser - very easy to do. If you can type and use a mouse, and have internet - you are all set! Or if 2 or more people are interested it could be a co-editor position which makes it even easier! About 4-5 hours are needed every 2 weeks (with current schedule of 26 issues / year). If you'd like to explore what is involved please email lifelines@lordlife.us and we will give you a demo, or you can ask Bill or Sue Dreisbach for more information. Thanks for considering this ministry opportunity! (Only 3 issues remaining in 2015!)
