A few years ago we developed a Vision statement that included the following:  "We value and participate in learning opportunities for spiritual growth." This led to the development of a ministry priority that we defined as "Cradle to Grave Faith Formation"; it's the idea that we need a strategy to provide meaningful and appropriate opportunities for spiritual growth for everyone in our midst. As the pastor responsible for learning ministry here at Lord of Life I take this responsibility very seriously. While I have actively been engaged as a teacher/leader in youth ministry for more than 30 years, I have never had the opportunity for any formal training beyond one course at seminary. It doesn't take a "rocket scientist" to see that this is an area that needs special attention and skills and even a lifetime of experience isn't enough to lead effectively in new and challenging times for our families.

So... A few weeks ago I had the honor of beginning a nine month journey of learning by spending a week at Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa with 14 other leaders who are passionate about ministry with young people and their families. We are a rather diverse group ranging in age from 22 to 61. Two of us are pastors, the rest are youth workers. We come from churches of every size from states like NJ, North Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, Texas and then some. I am grateful to God for the blessing of these fellow travelers and for what we will learn together and what we will support each other to accomplish in partnership with the people of our own congregations for the sake of Faith Formation with and for our families.

I want to thank all the people here at Lord of Life who are supporting this effort to move us toward a real plan for revitalizing our ministry with youth and families. From staff members, to the recently formed Children's Ministry Steering and Family Ministry Leadership Teams, to members of Council and a host of new and continuing volunteers, I sense the Spirit in action at every turn. I am especially grateful to those who have begun the difficult work of assessing our current fitness for supporting healthy and vibrant ministry in this area. My training has provided me with an assessment tool that identifies the main things we need to be aware of and how to evaluate where we stand in these areas. They are:

Congregational Assets
  • Faith Maturity
  • Pastoral Leadership Strength
  • Congregational Characteristics
  • Youth Involvement
Youth Ministry Assets
  • Youth Minister Strength
  • Youth and Adult Leadership
  • Youth Ministry Effectiveness
  • Family Involvement
We are already making real headway in knowing what our strengths and opportunities are in these areas and looking to what we can build on for the future. Don't be surprised if you are contacted for your input as we move forward in fulfilling our vision of being "a welcoming community of forgiven people proclaiming the perfect love of Jesus Christ!" especially for our youngest members and their families. Please keep this effort and those who will benefit from it in your prayers.

              Peace  - Pastor Sue Jones

Stewardship at Lord of Life

"Thank You!"

"We Are Lord of Life!"

"What is Happening?"

What does all of the above have to do with Stewardship and this Fall? The Stewardship Team started rolling out this year's Campaign with a learning session & Fellowship time on Sunday, October 4th between the worship services.  The learning session discussion was based around the Mutual Ministry questionnaire from this past spring.  This year's Stewardship Program will be one of "Personal Contact" using group meetings with all of the families of Lord of Life. These will be a one hour session around refreshments, two way conversation and discussion.

We are asking for families/members to sign up for one of many sessions that will be held between now and the end of November. We are trying to accommodate all parishioners and their time schedules so we have the remaining sessions:
  • Sunday - November 8 at 7 PM
  • Tuesday - November 10 at 7 PM
  • Wednesday - November 18 at 1 PM and 7 PM
  • Sunday - November 22 at 12 PM and 7 PM
Sessions will be held at the Lord of Life Fellowship Hall.
Please sign up for the session that you want to attend. Sign up sheets on the Narthex.
If there are any questions please contact Doug Hess, doughess@aol.com, or Rick Osman, ossie3rick@aol.com.

Volunteer Spotlight!

>> Stepping up to the change in our schedule, Lord of Life's nursery is staffed by adults and ready for young children each Sunday from 9:30-10:15 am. This allows parents to enjoy the fellowship time between services or to participate in the adult forum.

Please join me in thanking the loving volunteers who make this possible -- Tammy Miller, Janell Reich, Renee Jones, Fran Jones, Betsy Mottershead, Tracey Gibboni, Carolyn Cuviello, Betty Mastrillo, Bettyjane Watkins and Elizabeth Gibboni. A rotational schedule with two volunteers each Sunday makes this an easy service opportunity. Let me know if you feel the Lord calling you to assist in this ministry.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

>> Another new Sunday opportunity for SHYM (Senior High Youth Ministry) is made possible by Stephanie Vorwerk and Chester Drago. They are gathering for faithful conversations from 9:30-10:15 am in the back right corner of the Fellowship Hall. They invite our high school youth to come when they can and to bring along their friends. Thanks Steph and Chester!

Thanks!

Thanks again to Brett and Bill Reich for their help in taking apart (Brett) and hauling away (Bill R.) the large mixer that has been holding down the corner of the 'teller's office' for a couple of years. It's a shame we couldn't deploy it or find the power supply (so we could have sold it), but I'm glad it is finally out of the building.  We were able to recycle the electronics and also sell the metal and aluminum for scrap.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU
A big thank you goes out to everyone who came out on Saturday, October 17 to help clean out the basement in the FDC and closets around the building. And a bonus were 2 guys cleaning the gutters. There were 20 plus folks that took their Saturday morning to help others at LOL and we just wanted to let everyone know how much it was appreciated. The  dumpster was overflowing when we were done!

To my Lord of Life family,
With grateful joy I thank all who were able to come to my opening
at the Mad Batter in Cape May.
Your thoughtfulness is deeply appreciated and I am truly blessed and thank God for the wonderful gift of Lord of Life in my life.
Blessings to all,  Mary E. Stroup

Grace Place

Grace Place Class The Grace Place had such a fun month.  To learn about Fire Prevention we had the Tabernacle fire department come and speak with the children.  They were able to go out to the fire truck and see the equipment that has to be worn for a fire.  We are having our Halloween Parade on October 30 and many parents are going to partake in a Trunk'-or--Treat.  Miss Jill and Miss Ruth's classes continue to learn while having fun and making friendships.

ADULT BIBLE STUDY bible
WEDNESDAYS, 10-11:30
Our fall study, "Grace:  More Than We Deserve, Greater Than We Can Imagine" by Max Lucado has been awesome.  The last session will be held on 10/28.  Then, get ready for Life From the UpSide, by J. Ellsworth Kalas.  Here's an excerpt..."There is God. And because there is God, there is goodness. I profoundly believe that God is at work in our world and that our planet has not yet been written off as a lost cause...God is always at work, usually, I think, behind the scenes. And because of God, faith, love, and goodness keep being reborn."  Join in with this very engaging group as we learn, discuss, question, and enjoy lively conversation about our faith journeys.
All are welcome!

Quilting Ministry

quilts
If you were in church a few weeks ago you saw all the beautiful quilts displayed on the pews. These quilts were all made by women of LOL. This group has only been meeting for about a year and a half and have already made about 150 quilts for Lutheran World Relief. A few of our quilts have already been shipped to India and
Africa.
The quilters meet every other Thursday - a group meets in the morning and another group in the evening on alternate weeks. We can certainly use your help. If  you can sew then you can make a quilt. We do most of the sewing at home but we cut out fabric and piece quilts together at the meetings together with having some fun and fellowship with others. Please think about joining us!

==> If interested please call Gloria Brosious or Penny Miller and they can give you more information. There will be kits available if you just want to pick them up with the instructions and make them at home.

LifeLines Editor(s) needed!

Still need an editor for the Lifelines for 2016.  There is still time to get acquainted with the process this year.  The newsletter is edited online with only a web browser - very easy to do.  If you can type and use a mouse, and have internet - you are all set!

Or if 2 or more people are interested it could be a co-editor position which makes it even easier!  About 4-5 hours are needed every 2 weeks (with current schedule of 26 issues / year).  If you'd like to explore what is involved please email lifelines@lordlife.us and we will give you a demo, or you can ask Bill or Sue Dreisbach for more information.  Thanks for considering this ministry opportunity!
