As Jesus was proclaiming his Sermon on the Mount he cited what has come to be known in Christianity and other major world religions as "The Golden Rule"..."In everything do to others, as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets." (Matthew 7:12 - NRSV)

Pope Francis spoke these words recently before a session of the Congress in Washington with senators, members of the House of Representatives and Supreme Court Justices in attendance.  In slow and deliberate English he spoke biblical truth to power...with the whole world watching and listening.  For me, it was a gracious and inspiring moment. Throughout the Pontiff's visit to our nation, Roman Catholics and non-Roman Catholics alike were blessed by his humble and compassionate witness.  He seemed to continually be encouraging people to "see Christ in their neighbor and be Christ to their neighbor"; a catchphrase coined by our very own Martin Luther in the 16th century.

The six days Pope Francis spent in our country included numerous memorable moments for me.  While in our nation's capitol, he met with President Obama and spent time in prayer with U.S. bishops at Saint Matthew's Cathedral...but I'll remember his visit to a homeless-assistance center in downtown Washington where he conversed with and comforted the poor.  When he was in New York City he addressed the United Nations General Assembly and said mass in Madison Square Garden...but I'll remember his gracious participation in an interfaith worship service at the 9/11 Memorial and his visit to Our Lady Queen of Angels School in East Harlem where he affirmed and interacted with students and immigrant families.  During his stay in Philadelphia he spoke to those gathered in front of Independence Hall and said mass before close to one million people on JFK Parkway in front of the Art Museum...but I'll remember his private visit with victims of clerical abuse where he personally apologized for the pain caused by the church and the time he took with inmates at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility speaking words of encouragement and reminding them and us that "confinement does not mean exclusion" when it comes to God's grace.  In all of his scheduled and unscheduled encounters the Pope pointed us to Jesus by words and deeds.

As someone who treasures the life and witness of those who have gone before us, I was truly blessed by Pope Francis' reminder to all of us Americans to pursue the dream of liberty, equality, justice, mercy and love.  In his speech before congress he invited us to celebrate the gift of four great Americans; two who shared his faith tradition and two who did not.  He described their witness in this way, "Three sons and a daughter of this land, four individuals and four dreams: Lincoln, liberty; Martin Luther King, liberty in plurality and non-exclusion; Dorothy Day, social justice and the rights of persons; and Thomas Merton, the capacity for dialogue and openness to God".  In spite of their "saintly and sinful nature" each one of these people was inspired by the Spirit of God to rise above their foibles and weaknesses. The Pope celebrated these persons because in their own uniquely gifted and flawed way they were willing to let God use their lives for good!

What a joy it is to see this Christ-centered church leader, through his own example, encourage us to focus more on "inclusion than exclusion", "welcome than rejection", "compassion than insensitivity", "salvation than condemnation" and "life than death"!  I pray the memory of Pope Francis' visit will continue to inspire and challenge us to live our own faithful lives as we continue to point others to Jesus Christ who is the true hope for us and our world.

Autumn Blessings from your Brother in Christ,
               - Pastor David Jones

Stewardship at Lord of Life

"Thank You!"

"We Are Lord of Life!"

"What is Happening?"

What does all of the above have to do with Stewardship and this Fall? The Stewardship Team started rolling out this year's Campaign with a learning session & Fellowship time on Sunday, October 4th between the worship services.

The learning session discussion was based around the Mutual Ministry questionnaire from this past spring.

This year's Stewardship Program will be one of "Personal Contact" using group meetings with all of the families of Lord of Life. These will be a one hour session around refreshments, two way conversation and discussion.

We are asking for families/members to sign up for one of many sessions that will be held between now and the end of November. We are trying to accommodate all parishioners and their time schedules so we have come up with the following sessions:
  • Thursday - October 15 at 7 PM
  • Sunday - October 18 at 7 PM
  • Wednesday - October 21 at 1 PM and 7 PM
  • Sunday - November 8 at 7 PM
  • Tuesday - November 10 at 7 PM
  • Wednesday - November 18 at 1 PM and 7 PM
  • Sunday - November 22 at 12 PM and 7 PM
Presently all sessions will be held at the Lord of Life Fellowship Hall.
Please sign up for the session that you want to attend. Sign up sheets on the Narthex.
If there are any questions please contact Doug Hess or Rick Osman

LifeLines Editor(s) needed!

Still need an editor for the Lifelines for 2016.  There is still time to get acquainted with the process this year.  The newsletter is edited online with only a web browser - very easy to do.  If you can type and use a mouse, and have internet - you are all set!

Or if 2 or more people are interested it could be a co-editor position which makes it even easier!  About 4-5 hours are needed every 2 weeks (with current schedule of 26 issues / year).  If you'd like to explore what is involved please email lifelines@lordlife.us and we will give you a demo, or you can ask Bill or Sue Dreisbach for more information.  Thanks for considering this ministry opportunity!
