From the moment I stepped outdoors at 6:15 this morning I was reminded that Fall is just around the corner. The humidity and the temperature were in a much more tolerable range than they had been in months, the birds were doing their bird thing, the deer and the squirrels were doing their thing, and the sunrise was peaking through the trees - just perfect. For someone who grew up in upstate NY, and I maintain you can't claim "upstate" until at least Albany, this feels more like normal summer, cool evenings and warm days, perfect shorts and hoodie weather first thing in the morning while walking the dog.
For a moment it was blissful. And then as I walked Jessie back up the driveway toward the house my "to do list" for the day began to rear its ugly head in my consciousness. You know, that list of things that are already swirling around in all of our heads as September looms large... the reality check that before very long all the normal activities of a busy life, especially for families, will begin in earnest.
Much of my "to do list" these days has to do with Children and Family ministry. And I am very grateful for the process we began last Spring with two focus group meetings and the resulting team of amazing folks who have become a steering committee for this vital ministry. Already there are plans coming together for our children, youth, and families with an eye toward the things that we have identified as important for all of us and which inspired our new fall schedule. Worship, Fellowship, and Faith Formation.
To help all of us stay better informed as we take this journey together, I've made dramatic changes to the LOL Faith Formation web site in the last few days and will be looking to this site as a key resource for communicating with all of you our plans for September 13th and beyond. You can reach the site from the main Lord of Life web page (www.lordlife.us) or through the following link:
Please take some time to take a look and feel free to let me know how we can make it better and more useful for you.
Also, please pray for me and for what God has in store for all of us as I prepare to begin a nine month training program in "First Third" ministry beginning on September 20th at Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, IA. This training consists of a one week on-site experience with the remainder as distance learning through internet based technology. Check the Faith Formation site for updates and information about the training program and my progress through this process.
I'm excited about where we're going together! I hope you will prayerfully consider how God may be calling you and your family to a faithful encounter in a new and different way this fall, to allow yourself the opportunity to escape the running "to do list" for a couple of hours each week and settle into the blissful presence of the Spirit with your fellow members of the family of faith that is Lord of Life.
Peace! = ) Pastor Sue

Red Cross Blood Drive - Tuesday Aug 25th
|
Thanks to everyone who helped and gave blood during the latest blood drive. With the 'double red' donations, we had 53 equivalent pints donated! Supplies are always low in the summer, and we appreciate the turnout! Thanks also to Lu Hourihan and the 'calling team' who helped get donors in the doors!

Backpacks for kids Lord of Life out did itself this year exceeding our goal of collecting 100 backpacks. Through the efforts of the vacation bible school and the congregations generous donations, we collected 105 backpacks. Not all of the backpacks were full but we also collected a ton of supplies to go in them. Forty-five back packs were filled and given to Bridge of Peace. Sixty back packs went to the Christian Caring Center. We fulfilled the goal for Bridge of Peace but the Christian Caring Center needed 250 back packs for those who signed up and they had a waiting list for others who had a need. Our donation went a long way toward meeting their goals. Thank you to everyone who helped make this program a tremendous success! You made lots of kids happy. Future events We have a number of Sunday after services volunteer events planned this fall including planning to work at the Habitat restore in Maple Shade unloading trucks. We are also continuing to do our road clean ups and plan to have one this month. We are planning a work day/clean up at the YMCA Camp. We will be doing some early autumn gleaning at a local farm. Please watch your bulletin for dates and times. These events are family friendly for all ages so we hope that you and your family members will participate as a group. |
