"Jesus was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples." He said to them, "When you pray, say: Father,
hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come...." (Luke 11: 1-2 NRSV)
Brothers and Sisters...
Prayer has always been one of the most important tools for Christian disciples. Jesus taught his followers to pray and often "went off by himself to pray" as well. In the book of Acts we are reminded of the power of prayer when the Apostles John and Peter prayed for boldness to witness in Jerusalem "and the place where they were gathered together was shaken." The church in Thessalonica was encouraged by the Apostle Paul to "pray without ceasing" as this community struggled to live in challenging times. For close to 2000 years, girls and boys, men and women have been drawn closer to God, one another and a hurting world through the power of prayer.
Early on in my own pastoral ministry, I was taught to "start and end" every meeting and gathering with prayer. When I had the opportunity to work in youth ministry with a local Lutheran Church Missouri Synod pastor, Mark Stillman, I'll always remember his reminder to me and others "to cover all that we were planning and doing with prayer". And many of my most helpful insights regarding gracious living are flavored by prayers attributed to people like...Francis of Assisi - "Lord, make me an instrument of your peace!" or Richard of Chichester - "Day by day, three things I pray...to see thee more clearly...love thee more dearly...follow thee more nearly...day by day." or Reinhold Niebuhr - "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change...to change the things I can..and the wisdom to know the difference."
I find myself in prayer with many of you. Those times of prayer may occur within worship or bible study or meetings. And at times we pray together for guidance and healing; often face-to-face and frequently on the phone. With this focus on prayer in mind, I want to offer each one of you a prayer that I will be praying daily as we prepare to initiate a new worship, faith formation and fellowship schedule this September 12th and 13th. I encourage you and your family to pray this prayer too; at least once a week over the next month as we approach an exciting and challenging new chapter in our church life..together! Let prayer be one of our constant companions on this journey towards deeper commitment to the cause of Jesus Christ.
"Good Lord, you are worthy of our prayer, praise and thanksgiving! As we begin a new program year this September, touch the hearts and minds of those who lead us in worship, faith formation and fellowship...with boldness. May our commitment and offering to you be creative, gracious and divinely inspired. In the midst of challenges and changes, may your Spirit strengthen us as we speak truth in love with one another humbly seeking to forgive and be forgiven. As we reach out to members and friends, we trust that Lord of Life will continue to be a place where everybody is somebody and Jesus is Lord. All this we pray in the name of the God who creates, saves and sustains us... the God who knows us as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen!
Looking forward to sharing faith and life with you this Fall!
Your Brother in Christ, Pastor David Jones

Step back in time at the Barclay Farmstead, a historical oasis in the heart of bustling Cherry Hill. Built in 1816 by a Quaker farmer, Joseph Thorn, the farmhouse and surrounding 32-acre property offers visitors an opportunity to observe and participate in the agrarian lifestyle that once dominated the South Jersey landscape. We'll enjoy a tour of the farmhouse and then spend some time wandering the interpretive nature trails and admiring the beautiful Plant-A-Patch garden plots.
THANK YOU!
...to all of our Lutheran Crossings angels of all ages who helped to make our August visit a memorable one for the residents!

Children's Fresh Air Home
We are continuing to collect for the Children's Fresh Air Home through the end of August. Combined with moneys collected from VBS, Lord of Life will make a difference in helping getting the home open again.
Backpacks
We are winding down the collection of back packs and school supplies. You still have time to get them in and support the collections for Bridge of Peace and the Christian Caring Center. Thank you to Chris Kulina for applying for a Thrivent grant. We received $250 which we used to buy back packs and supplies. We purchased them from Smile Amazon which also gave .05% back to Lord of Life for the purchase.
Thrivent
If you are a member of Thrivent and you have not applied for one of the action grants, we would love to help you. So far we have seen seven grants but we know that there are close to 80 Thrivent members in our church community. We just don't know who you are. It is easy to apply for the grant and we will make it even easier for you. Call Linda Jagiela at 267-275-7582 or email novedlinda@comcast.net to get some ideas and help applying for the grants.
Up Coming
Watch Lifelines and your bulletin for some upcoming "God's Work Our Hands" days. We plan to glean a farm, clean up Camp Ockinicken, do our Tabernacle Road Clean up, and work at the Habitat ReStore. These fun service events will make a big difference if you are involved so plan to come out and support this ministry!

LOL supports local Eagle Scout Project
|
Greetings,
My name is Sean Herb, and I am a Boy Scout from Troop 48 in Medford Lakes. I am working on my Eagle Project, where I will collect used bikes, make repairs, and donate them to children in Camden who cannot afford them. If you have any bikes that you wish to donate, I would be happy to take bikes in any condition. I can pick them up at your home on either Saturday August 15th or Saturday August 22nd, whichever is more convenient for you.
Please call 856-912-8675 or e-mail me at sherb42@gmail.com to make pick-up arrangements. Or, if it's more convenient for you, feel free to bring your bike to Lord of Life, leave it by the shed near the parking lot, and I'll pick it up from there. Lastly, if you don't have any bikes but would like to support my Eagle Project by making a donation towards purchasing repair parts, please let me know.
Thank you very much, Sean Herb

Church Council Highlights
|
In an effort to keep all of you better informed of the work of the your Congregation Council, the following are a few highlights for our most recent meeting held on Monday evening, August 10:
- We continued to discuss logistics for the new fall worship/fellowship/study schedule. Council members will be serving as additional greeters to help everyone make the most of the morning opportunities.
- Council continues to discuss the results of a survey conducted by the Mutual Ministry team earlier this year. Council members are preparing comments on the survey to be shared with the congregation via the lifelines in an upcoming issue and will hold a discussion forum opportunity in early October during the Sunday morning Adult Study.
- We continue to discuss the challenges related to our current financial status. Cash reserves for the summer have been expended and we are likely to need to dip into the building fund in order to meet current expenses even though our spending continuing to trend below plan.
- The Discipleship/Stewardship team reported that they are making good progress on the preparation of a plan for this fall and beyond. The approach will be more direct, personal, and interactive.
- We discussed how to better manage the many requests we receive from our youth regard scouting projects. All scouts wishing to do Eagle Scout or Gold Award projects should direct their interest to Church Council.
Please continue to keep us in your prayers!
Sincerely,
Your Congregation Council
