Thoughts in Print, by Pastor Sue
|
Have you noticed? Have you noticed the mobiles hanging from the ceiling in the sanctuary since Pentecost Sunday? When I first caught a glimpse of them and they drew my attention upward toward the upper reaches of the Sanctuary and my mouth fell open in wonder all I could say was "Wow!". The streams of doves hanging from them, the transition of colors from white to yellow to orange to red, with colored strips woven in between, adds to the effect of blending the doves with a sense of fire or flame; the perfect combination to represent the presence of the Holy Spirit.
When Janell Reich first suggested this project and showed me a picture of something similar I thought it was a terrific idea. But seeing something in a picture and having the idea come to life in such a dramatic way are two totally different experiences. My sincere thanks to Janell for coming up with the idea and for doing most of the work of putting the mobiles together, especially folding all those origami doves. I have it on good authority that Erin and Kris Gordon and Liz Brandon contributed some of their time to the effort so my thanks to them as well. Isn't it amazing what one little idea, one little bit of inspiration for a special occasion in the church, and a willingness to follow it through, can do for all of us as we once again celebrate the day and the season of Pentecost.
In the Gospel lesson for last weekend, Trinity weekend, we heard from Jesus about this very same Spirit, the Spirit that surrounds us and fills us: John 3:7-8 "So don't be surprised when I say, 'You must be born again.' The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can't tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can't explain how people are born of the Spirit." In a very real way, the Spirit alive in Janell and her helpers inspired something new and creative and uplifting for all of us; the very same Spirit given as a free gift to all of us to inspire faith and new life.
So the next time you're in church during this season after Pentecost - LOOK UP! Allow your attention to be drawn upward, toward the beautiful paper doves that grace the open space above all of us as we gather for worship. Allow the Spirit to lift you up, to remind you what it feels like to be held in the palm of God's hand, to renew your spirit for life, a life in Christ, a life of faith that continues into eternity.
Peace! = )

Social Ministry
We will be meeting on June 17th at 7:00 pm to discuss the remainder of the year for social ministry. This meeting will be a planning session for the backpack collections, Change for Change ministry, and God's Work Our Hands work days. Please join us and bring ideas of other worthwhile projects for social ministry to participate in.
Change for Change
We are currently collecting change for the Children's Fresh Air Home in Wildwood. They are in need of linens and bedding for the facility which has been under construction for a while now. They are down to the final stretch. About the Children's Fresh Air Home:The Children's Fresh Air Home (CFAH) is a non-profit organization that provides a no-cost, enriching summer experience at the Jersey Shore in a safe, positive environment for children who may be living with family or community adversities. CFAH accomplishes this goal through positive and nurturing programming that fosters enhanced social skills, leadership abilities, and critical peer and mentorship interactions. The home, located in North Wildwood, has offered a summer respite to more than 20,000 children from the Philadelphia and New Jersey regions for more than 115 years.

Lord of Life family,
Many of you know Cheryl Larson from the many years she has been a member and served Lord of Life. Today she is 26 weeks pregnant (with twins!) and preparing to enter the hospital because of the somewhat risky nature of her pregnancy. What should be attached at the bottom is a link to a sign-up web page with opportunities to sign up to visit her in the hospital. While I'm going to be there as much as I can, I'm sure she'd love someone to visit her and keep her company, while not overwhelming her with 50 folks visiting at once. Am asking if you could please share with the Lord of Life family informally as there may be those who would be interested in participating in this "progressive shower" of love to Cheryl!

Team 345 had a wonderful adventure in all things construction at Diggerland last Sunday. There were 27 adults and kids who participated in the fellowship event organized by Dani Durante Heinold. Pastor David Jones traversed to the top of the highest ropes course in the United States and was followed up the ropes by a professional photographer. While observing Pastor's ascent, one Diggerland staff member stated, "He is close to God!" We all thank Dani for helping to make this a day full of great memories! This Sunday is the last day of regular Sunday School and a one-room party planned by Bettyjane Watkins will be enjoyed by all. Please take a moment to thank the teachers who have lovingly dedicated time and talents to share the Good News with your children. Summer school one-room sessions are currently being planned and teachers sought. We will need two teachers each Sunday, however, there will be no classes on the 4th of July weekend or Labor Day weekend. Marie Lamb will be holding training sessions for VBS volunteers (6th grade through high school), on Sunday, June 14 at 11:15 am and Tuesday, July 21 at 7 pm. Attendance at one of the sessions is mandatary and $5 for VBS T-shirt will be collected at that time. Please contact Marie if you have any questions and let her know which session your child/children will attend. A new edition of our children's newsletter, Parenting Christian Kids (PCK) is in press and will be distributed soon.

Here is a "different" volunteer activity...
|
Did you know that for millions of years Delaware Bay has been the most significant site in the world for breeding horseshoe crabs? Did you know the species is in trouble and is not scheduled to be recovered until 2073? However, you and your families can help reduce their mortality due to stranding by volunteering to join a walk along the shore and returning the crabs to their proper side. Walks along NJ beaches from Sea Breeze to North Cape May last about 1-2 hours and cover 1-2 km of beach and are scheduled through the end of June. Horseshoe crabs are harmless creatures and can be picked up on their sides and simply turned over. Visit returnthefavornj.org to learn more or to volunteer to join a scheduled walk! Why help save them? -- Over 50% of shorebird diets consist of horseshoe crab eggs; a substance in their blood (Limulus amebocyte lysate) is used to test for sterility of medical equipment and virtually all intravenous drugs; research on their compound eye has led to better understanding of human vision.

Meet the Council - Betty Mastrillo
|
I am Betty Mastrillo. I am originally from Bergen County in North Jersey (if you could not tell by my accent). We moved to Tabernacle in 1987. I have been attending Lord of Life for about 10 years.
I have 3 wonderful children, Lauren, Emily (husband PJ), and Bobby. The absolute joys of my life are my grandchildren Rosalie, who is 5 1/2, Miles who is 2 1/2, and another grandson due in August.
Many of you know my absolute favorite thing to do is going to the shore and just soaking in the beauty God has provided us with.
A little over 3 years ago I was asked to run the Women's Ministry. With the help of others, we have a wonderful relationship with Bridge of Peace in Camden and every other month we bring them dinner. We have started the Annual walk for Breast Cancer in Ocean City and started a BUNKO night.
I also enjoy helping in the kitchen for VBS or whenever needed.
I feel I have been truly blessed and honored that God has led me to Lord of Life.
