From the Desk of Pastor Dave

Brothers and Sisters...

Two years ago we installed a church sign in the front of our property.  As a way of introducing this tool for ministry to the congregation I wrote the following.  "What would you say to people about Christian faith if you only had an LED (light emitting diode) sign with three lines to work with?  That's just what Lord of Life has to consider as it programs its new sign to speak to thousands of people who drive by our church on Medford Lakes - Tabernacle Road."

For the last two years we have been proclaiming the faith and informing the community about the ministry of our congregation and the marvelous work of God.  Have you seen the sign?  I realize that not everyone at Lord of Life drives past our property on a regular basis to see what we have broadcast to passersby.  So in order to keep you all "in the loop", let me share some of the messages that have gotten the attention of numerous members and friends or will in the near future.

Messages of Faith that we have shared include...

"Judging Others leaves no time to Love Them"

"Our Salvation - Costly to God...Free to us!"

"We Own Nothing - Everything is a Gift from God!"

"Our Hearts are Restless until they Rest in God"

"No Thorns - No Throne...No Cross - No Crown"

        "Better Than a Bunny...Try a Risen Lord!"

"Love God...Love Neighbor - Now Repeat!"

"Don't Keep the Faith...Spread It Around!"

Our sign has also announced "Baptismal Blessings" to the families of Lainey, Anthony, Luca, Cameron, Izabelle, Delaney, Abigail and Noah over the last few weeks.  And we have invited our community to numerous events like...

  • Team 345 Yoga Night - Kids / Parents Welcome (7 adults and 10 kids attended!)
  • LOL At Lutheran Crossings - Join Us  (14 LOL helpers reached out to 45 residents!)
  • God's Work - Our Hands Road Clean-Up  (There's still time to sign-up and help this Sunday, April 26!)
  • Helping Hands - Let's Make the Sandwiches  (healthier than donuts!)

I concluded my April 4, 2013 LifeLines article in the following way...and I believe it's still true!  "When our witness is creative and engaging, the Holy Spirit can do the rest!  God only knows who might see the sign at Lord of Life and be prompted to deeper faith.  I trust you and I will continually seek to get the message out and take it in too!"

                                                                        Your Brother in Christ,

                                                                           Pastor David Jones

Christian Caring Center

A word from Madelyn Mears-Sheldon, Director of the Christian Caring Center.
Several of you have reached out recently to ask about our current volunteer needs. We have just had to reduce our staff due to funding issues, so we are in need of volunteers with office skills more than ever.

There are two areas where we are hoping to build new teams of volunteers:

silver-keyboard2.jpg1. Case management -- helping guests and clients get connected with needed services. This involves learning how to use a software program called HMIS, which is used by many Burlington County social services agencies to connect people and services. It is not difficult to learn, but does require that you have computer and Internet literacy. The ideal volunteers will be able to commit a minimum of one shift per week.

business-cellphone-woman.jpg2. Telephone receptionists -- I won't lie to you, folks, this can be the toughest job in the house. The people who become our phone team will form the first point of contact with every possible kind of visitor to the center, from clients in crisis, to donors, to vendors, to other agencies..... We will teach you how to serve the Lord in this vital post. You will learn about all the services we offer as well as how to give some on-the-spot referrals to other services. If you are already experienced in phone work, you'll build new skills into your repertoire. If you are learning phone work for the first time, you will build your resume, gain all kinds of professional confidence, and be a blessing to many in the process! The ideal volunteer will be able to commit at least one shift every other week.

"Earth Day" - God to Saint Francis

GOD to Saint Francis:
Frank,  ... You know all about gardens and nature. What in the world is going on down there on the planet?  What happened to the dandelions, violets, milkweeds, and stuff I started eons ago?   I had a perfect no-maintenance garden plan. Those plants grow in any type of soil, withstand drought and multiply with abandon. The nectar from the long-lasting blossoms attracts butterflies, honeybees, and flocks of songbirds. I expected to see a vast garden of colors by now.  But, all I see are these green rectangles.

St. FRANCIS:     It's the tribes that settled there, Lord.  The  Suburbanites.  They started calling your flowers 'weeds' and went to great lengths to kill them and replace them with grass.

GOD:     Grass? But, it's so boring. It's not colorful. It doesn't attract butterflies, birds, and bees; only grubs and sod worms. It's sensitive to temperatures. Do these Suburbanites really want all that grass growing there?

ST. FRANCIS:     Apparently so, Lord. They go to great pains to grow it and keep it green. They begin each spring by fertilizing grass and poisoning any other plant that crops up in the lawn.

GOD:  The spring rains and warm weather probably make grass grow really fast. That must make the Suburbanites happy.

FRANCIS:     Apparently not, Lord. As soon as it grows a little, they cut it, sometimes twice a week.

GOD:  They cut it? Do they then bale it like hay?

FRANCISNot exactly, Lord. Most of them rake it up and put it in bags.

GOD:  They bag it?  Why?  Is it a cash crop?  Do they sell it?

ST. FRANCIS:   No, Sir, just the opposite. They pay to throw it away.

GOD:  Now, let me get this straight. They fertilize grass so it will grow. And, when it does grow, they cut it off and pay to throw it away?

ST. FRANCIS:  Yes, Sir.

GOD:   These Suburbanites must be relieved in the summer when we cut back on the rain and turn up the heat.  That surely slows the growth and saves them a lot of work.

FRANCIS:  You aren't going to believe this, Lord. When the grass stops growing so fast, they drag out hoses and pay more money to water it, so they can continue to mow it and pay to get rid of it.

GOD:   What nonsense. At least they kept some of the trees.  That was a sheer stroke of genius, if I do say so myself. The trees grow leaves in the spring to provide beauty and shade in the summer. In the autumn, they fall to the ground and form a natural blanket to keep moisture in the soil and protect the trees and bushes. It's a natural cycle of life.

FRANCIS:  You better sit down, Lord. The Suburbanites have drawn a new circle. As soon as the leaves fall, they rake them into great piles and pay to have them hauled away.

GOD:     No!? What do they do to protect the shrub and tree roots in the winter to keep the soil moist and loose?

ST. FRANCIS:     After throwing away the leaves, they go out and buy something which they call mulch. They haul it home and spread it around in place of the leaves.

GOD:     And where do they get this mulch?

ST. FRANCIS:     They cut down trees and grind them up to make the mulch.

GOD:   Enough! I don't want to think about this anymore.  St. Catherine, you're in charge of the arts. What movie have you scheduled for us tonight?

CATHERINE: 'Dumb and Dumber', Lord. It's a story about....

GOD:     Never mind, I think I just heard the whole story from St. Francis.
