Thoughts in Print - Pastor Sue

Before I go anywhere with this article the first thing I need to do is acknowledge something truly wonderful that I hope I never get tired of -

Christ is Risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Those few words are the very core of who we are, of why Lord of Life exists, of what our faith stands on. And they bear repeating, not just at Easter, but each and every day we draw breath. Those words have the power to inspire us, to comfort us, and to remind us of the great lengths that God will go to in order that we might know we are his beloved children - NO MATTER WHAT!

That said, I want to share with you something that I came across as I was studying up on the Gospel of Mark for our Adult group on Wednesday morning. It was in a section called Taking it Home in one of my commentaries related to the 5th Chapter of Mark where he tells of several miracles performed by Jesus early in his ministry; in particular concerning the healing of a woman and a child in Mark 5:21-43. It said this:

"Both of these miracles require an undistracted faith. Is your faith distracted by love of this world or fear that God's plan is not the best plan for your life? What might you do to remove the distractions that hinder your faith?

  • How strong would you say that your faith in Jesus is at this point in your life?
  • On a scale of 1 (least) and 10 (most) how would you rate it?
  • What might you do to increase your faith?"

I want to share with all of you that these few words really got me thinking. They got me thinking about my own faith journey and my own walk with Jesus and how easy it is even for Pastors to get distracted in the midst of the busy-ness of even making church happen. While I revel in the roller-coaster ride of Holy Week and the joy and freedom of Easter, I am nevertheless challenged by the reality that to fully experience all that Jesus has to offer me both now and every day of my life, I need to take a step back, and take a deep breath, and allow myself to simply BE in the midst of Jesus presence and not worry so much about the DO of everything that serves as a distraction and pulls me away from what Jesus offers me; the gifts he gives that feed me and strengthen me and bring peace and healing to my life. So I am spending some time this week answering the above questions for myself. I am spending some time in prayer and meditation and working on thinking through how I can do a better of job of finding the balance between the BE and the DO. And you know what? It's been wonderful.

The reality for all of us is that simply living this life is a distraction when it comes to our faith. Regardless of who we are, we get caught up, and pulled away, and knocked off track. Our journey of faith can suffer as a result. So I encourage you to take a few moments sometime soon to read that passage and those healing stories in Mark 5:21-43. Think about and pray about what those verses say to you; how they speak to you and your faith where you are right now. And then answer those questions above for yourself. Especially this one: What might you do to remove the distractions that hinder your faith? Only God knows what wonderful insights and blessings God has in store for you when you do!

Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed! Alleluia!

Blessings and Peace!

Pastor Sue

Meet Your Council Members

Rudderow
Donna and Emily

Who is Donna Rudderow? Some may know her as the Church Council Secretary, others may associate the name with her countless hours devoted to the Tabernacle PTA, or from working in the Tabernacle schools, but to me she is just Mom. My Mom is a beautiful woman both inside and out. She spends her time working to ensure the happiness of her family, all of those whom she encounters in her everyday life. She is kind and caring and always willing to help. She is patient; which is definitely difficult with teenage twins, and she is gracious in all that she does. During her years at the church I've watched my Mom turning into the best version of herself. Aside from the things that she does for my dad, my brother and I, she helps take care of my Nana and my Grandpa. In her down time, my mom likes to read and go "thrifting". She's also known to crack an oddly witty joke from time to time. So who is Donna Rudderow? Well, she's my mom.

God's Work Our Hands

April 26, 2015 immediately following the 10:00 am service, we will meet for brunch and then proceed to do a road clean up in Tabernacle. This day of service is a family friendly event. There are sign up sheets on the bulletin board in the narthex to participate in the clean up and to help with the breakfast. We need help from volunteers willing to cook up dishes for breakfast, bring juice and bagels, and to set up and clean up.   Even if you are not participating in the clean up,  you are welcome to attend the breakfast.  We will be having a scavenger hunt along the route of the clean up to make the work a little more fun.  Please bring work gloves with you and dress appropriately for the weather.  We have a total of four workdays planned through September so please plan to attend some or all of them.

Change for Change

Thank you to everyone who emptied out their pockets of change to assist the Penny Miller Sewing Academy in Haiti.  We collected $303.00 mostly in pennies.  Add that to the $400 we made on the cookie trays at Christmas through the Women's ministry's efforts, we have hit a home run in shipping sewing machines and supplies and defraying some of the operating costs of this exciting mission. .

Our next change jar ministry will start up shortly.  We will be saving change to buy linens and bedding fro the Children's Fresh Air Home in Wildwood.  This ministry allows intercity youth to vacation at the Jersey shore.  The home has been given a face lift and is now set to reopen shortly.  Andy Roppoli has been leading the charge on this from Lord of Life.

The Christian Caring Center's Code Blue Shelter

We had another successful collection of casseroles for the Christian Caring Center's Code Blue Shelter.  We sent 15 casseroles along with some cookies and baked goods.  Combine that with the previous month and we were able to make close to 50 casseroles in two months!  Our baking and cooking is much appreciated and it gives those staying there an opportunity to have a home cooked meal.  Thank you to everyone who participated.

Christian Caring Center

A word from Madelyn Mears-Sheldon, Director of the Christian Caring Center.
Several of you have reached out recently to ask about our current volunteer needs. We have just had to reduce our staff due to funding issues, so we are in need of volunteers with office skills more than ever.

There are two areas where we are hoping to build new teams of volunteers:

silver-keyboard2.jpg1. Case management -- helping guests and clients get connected with needed services. This involves learning how to use a software program called HMIS, which is used by many Burlington County social services agencies to connect people and services. It is not difficult to learn, but does require that you have computer and Internet literacy. The ideal volunteers will be able to commit a minimum of one shift per week.

business-cellphone-woman.jpg2. Telephone receptionists -- I won't lie to you, folks, this can be the toughest job in the house. The people who become our phone team will form the first point of contact with every possible kind of visitor to the center, from clients in crisis, to donors, to vendors, to other agencies..... We will teach you how to serve the Lord in this vital post. You will learn about all the services we offer as well as how to give some on-the-spot referrals to other services. If you are already experienced in phone work, you'll build new skills into your repertoire. If you are learning phone work for the first time, you will build your resume, gain all kinds of professional confidence, and be a blessing to many in the process! The ideal volunteer will be able to commit at least one shift every other week.

Open Position - LifeLines Editor

white_mouse_keyboard.jpg   The current LifeLines editing process is online and easy to use - as much training as is needed is available, but basic use of a web browser on any mac or pc is really all that is needed.  It can be done anytime at home (or at church if a computer is needed).  Or if 2 or more people are interested it could be a co-editor position which makes it much easier!  About 4-5 hours are needed every 2 weeks (with current schedule of 26 issues / year).  If you'd like to explore what is involved please email lifelines@lordlife.us and we will give you a demo, or you can ask Bill or Sue Dreisbach for more information.
Thanks for considering this ministry opportunity!
