Brothers and Sisters...
Since the last weekend of Lent 2015 is soon to come and Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter are a little over a week away, this is a good time to invite members and friends of Lord of Life to consider taking a journey on the Meditation Walk. This can be done by taking an actual walk on our property and utilizing an age appropriate devotional booklet at the entrance of the site or by taking a virtual journey as one visits our website and links on to the Meditation Walk. In anticipation of this devotional experience, I thought it would be helpful to share a brief history of how and why Lord of Life created this opportunity for congregation and community.
The idea for introducing the Stations of the Cross at Lord of Life originated with a retreat experience I had in December 1995. Howard Dodson, a member of the congregation, invited me to visit Graymoor in Garrison, New York to attend an advent retreat sponsored by the Franciscan Order. While there we visited the retreat center's outdoor Stations of the Cross. These stations were sculpted and placed along a trail that had been well worn. The Way of the Cross reflected the traditional sequence that had existed for centuries in the Roman church. I commented to Howard how important it was to me for any observance of the stations to be biblically based. I had a problem with the Veronica legend and the numbering of three falls by Jesus. We both agreed it would be a blessing for Lord of Life to have such a devotional walk on our pinelands site.
For the next several years I continued to observe how various churches were using the Stations of the Cross. It also became clearer to me that both Roman Catholic and Protestant churches were lifting up this devotional opportunity for their people. My interest in the project for Lord of Life peaked when I visited Saint Andrew Roman Catholic Church in Gibbsboro, New Jersey. While attending a retreat on Centering Prayer, I took the opportunity to visit their outdoor stations. All 14 stations were sited in a wooded area around the church and each had been constructed by a member of the parish. These depictions were a contemporary rendering done as wood sculptures and reflected a marvelous contribution on the part of congregational members; uniquely the work of Saint Andrew's parishioners.
Shortly thereafter, while searching through books at a local Christian bookstore, I discovered a version of the Stations of the Cross which I had never seen before. The author had chosen to use a biblical version of the stations but began not with Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane but with The Last Supper. He even concluded with The Resurrection as the 14th station instead of Jesus' burial. I was fascinated by the accompanying art work which was a series of painted terra cotta stations; earthy and evocative. We decided to mount these stations and place them at 14 different locations in the sanctuary during Holy Week. Parishioners were encouraged to spend time meditating at each station. They were invited to look upon the image, read the biblical text and commentary and then pray. Many members took advantage of this devotional opportunity and interest was expressed in creating something more permanent.
|
Our desire to make these stations available beyond Holy week led us to consider a Meditation walk on a corner of our property. We sought to create a site where congregational members and friends in the community could find a quiet place to meditate, pray, and reflect on the Way of the Cross. A visit to a local signage company, Alpha 1 Studios yielded an agreement to produce 14 stations loosely based on illustrations we showed them and composed of resin.
|
|
|
With the cooperation of parishioners, Boy Scouts and friends, these stations were mounted and placed along a path that wound its way through the woods. The Meditation Walk was dedicated on November 15, 1998, and has been enhanced throughout the years with lighting, landscaper's blocks, and benches. Here in this place the modern day pilgrim of the Cross can experience the passion story in a secluded and yet not isolated location.
Years later, the Meditation Walk became the pathway to our Memorial Garden where the created remains of loved ones are interred. For those who choose to be buried at this site, our procession from the church leads us past stations commemorating the most important week in the world's history. The final resting place for the faithful is near the the station announcing The Resurrection. On this walk and in this garden we come face to face with the church's ancient acclamation, "Christ has died! Christ is risen! Christ will come again!"
Truly, the Way of the Cross has inspired and challenged believers to more deeply commit themselves to Christ. I trust that our passion pilgrimages will not only bring us closer to the compassionate spirit of Jesus but also closer to one another. May what began as an ancient tradition in the church now serve to remind us that God's deepest desire is to keep us close to the cross and ever mindful of the Resurrection!
Your brother in Christ, Pastor Jones

This is a SURVEY on the idea of changing our worship service schedule on Sunday mornings to allow for study and fellowship time between the services. This idea has been expressed a number of times over the last year or so by a good number of people and was a common theme during our children's ministry conversations. So here's your chance to share your thoughts (note: we have had 90 responses so far). I have created a survey on our Faith Formation web site and would love to hear from you. Please let me know what you think about the idea of changing things up on Sunday morning. Simply click on the link below and take the survey. Peace - Pastor Sue = )

Open Position - LifeLines Editor
|
Yeah we get it - you aren't looking for something else to do. But your church needs you. We need a new editor of the LifeLines - the old one needs to move on to other areas of service. The current editing process is online and easy to use - as much training as is needed is available, but basic use of a web browser on any mac or pc is really all that is needed. It can be done anytime at home (or at church if a computer is needed). Or if 2 or more people are interested it could be a co-editor position which makes it much easier! About 4-5 hours are needed every 2 weeks (with current schedule of 26 issues / year). If you'd like to explore what is involved please email lifelines@lordlife.us and we will give you a demo, or you can ask Bill or Sue Dreisbach for more information. Thanks for prayerfully considering this ministry opportunity!

Directly to the left of the altar you will see a picture of a tree. That tree is intended to help us remember our theme for Lent this year which is The Tree of Life.
Each week there is a special devotion at the beginning of worship that reminds us that The Tree of Life for all of us is truly the cross of Christ. And each week our tree in church will come to life with leaves that all of you will provide.
Throughout Lent we are encouraging you to help your children participate in the Lenten discipline of GIVING by living out their faith in practical ways at home. Leaves made of green construction paper will be available on the Lenten Devotion table in the Narthex for you to take home and help you do just that. The idea is for you to encourage your children to perform service at home and to write what they did and their name on a leaf each time they do. Please help your children pick something from the list, or something that you come up with, during the week. Try to pick as many different things as possible so they have the opportunity to try new things. Bring your leaves back to church the following Sunday so we can add them to the other leaves on the tree in the sanctuary to celebrate what it means to give life by serving!
The following is a list of some of the ways your children can serve during Lent:
- Learn a new bible verse.
- Pick up trash in the neighborhood.
- Help mom or dad with a chore. (Trash, clearing the table, yard work, dishes, etc.)
- Pray for someone who isn't nice to you.
- Make an offering to the "Change for Change" jug at church.
- Listen to a Christian music station on the radio.
- Say a prayer for a friend in need.
- Help take care of a family pet.
- Clean your room/pick up your toys/clothes.
- Say "God loves you." to someone.
- Hug a family member.
- Say a prayer at meals and at bedtime.
- Write a "Thank You Note" to God.
- Stand up for someone who is being bullied.
- Volunteer at an animal shelter.
- Invite someone to church.
- Help your friends/brothers/sisters. (Play nice, share, etc.)
- Use good manners. (Say "please" and "thank you".)
- Check for good batteries in the smoke detectors at home. Or encourage mom and dad to get them if you don't have them.
- Talk to a family member you don't get to see very often. (Phone, Skype, letter, email...)
- and anything else you can think of...
Take the Lenten Tree of Life Challenge and watch our tree come to life! |
Christian Caring Center
Attention all cooks! We will again be preparing casseroles for the Christian Caring Center's Code Blue Center. Our goal is to refurbish their stock. They house and feed individuals when the weather is too cold for them to stay outdoors. Additionally, the stock of can goods and non-perishable boxed foods is also low. If you would like to assist, please have prepared casseroles in freezable containers labeled with what they are to church by Monday, March 28, 2015 at noon in order for them to be delivered with the sandwiches for helping hands. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
God's work our Hands
We will performing road clean up after worship on Sunday, April 26th. We will share a brunch and then head out to clean up the roads we have been assigned. This is an event for all ages and we encourage everyone to get involved. For fun, we will have a treasure hunt along the route. There are sign up sheets in the Narthex for participants and also for anyone who can assist with preparing food for our brunch. If you can't clean up the road and you just want to come to the brunch, you are also more than welcome.
This is the first of our God's Work Our Hands Sunday Missions and we know it will be a huge success. The more the merrier is the motto for this event. Please come equipped with comfortable shoes, weather appropriate clothing, and work gloves. If you don't have work gloves, let me know, and I will bring you some. For more information, contact Linda Jagiela at novedlinda@comcast.net or 267-275-7582. Watch for future events such as gleaning at a farm and work days at some of the local camps and wildlife centers.
Change for Change Jug Ministry
This is the final week we will be collecting change for the Penny Miller Sewing Academy in Haiti. The change collected will be used to defer the costs of sending sewing machines to the school. Each machine costs $100 to ship and the machines are given to the students upon graduation. So before coming to service this weekend, reach under the cushions in your sofa, look in the console of your car, or just empty your pockets of your loose change and help us fill up the jug. If you have already, thank you. It's already heavy and hopefully we will need a hand truck to take it to be spun!

The Auxiliary is working on their next big project........Spring Fling which will be held on Saturday, May 16th from 10:00-3:00. Look for more information as we get closer to the date. The auxiliary is looking for donations of gently used items such as toddler toys, women's purses, jewelry, and knick knacks to use on that day. As always, stuffed animals and nail polish continue to be at the top of the list for needed items by the Activities Department.
|
A word from Madelyn Mears-Sheldon, Director of the Christian Caring Center.
Several of you have reached out recently to ask about our current volunteer needs. We have just had to reduce our staff due to funding issues, so we are in need of volunteers with office skills more than ever.
There are two areas where we are hoping to build new teams of volunteers:
1. Case management -- helping guests and clients get connected with needed services. This involves learning how to use a software program called HMIS, which is used by many Burlington County socia l services agencies to connect people and services. It is not difficult to learn, but does require that you have computer and Internet literacy. The ideal volunteers will be able to commit a minimum of one shift per week.
2. Telephone receptionists -- I won't lie to you, folks, this can be the toughest job in the house. The people who become our phone team will form the first point of contact with every possible kind of visitor to the center, from clients in crisis, to donors, to vendors, to other agencies..... We will teach you how to serve the Lord in this vital post. You will learn about all the services we offer as well as how to give some on-the-spot referrals to other services. If you are already experienced in phone work, you'll build new skills into your repertoire. If you are learning phone work for the first time, you will build your resume, gain all kinds of professional confidence, and be a blessing to many in the process! The ideal volunteer will be able to commit at least one shift every other week.
