Thoughts in Print, by Pastor Sue
|
As I write this to all of you this week I am sitting in my family room on the couch with a crackling fire trying to be as warm and cozy as possible in the midst of yet another winter blast. Hopefully most of you are home warm and safe as well. This has been a difficult winter, especially the cold temperatures coupled with the ICE. I don't know about you, but I've had just about all the chopping and tossing ice-melt I can handle for one winter.
Even though it's the dead of winter, there has been a lot of activity lately looking forward through spring and even into the summer and fall months. All of that energy is focused on planning for our programs with Children and Youth. I want to thank those of you who made it a priority to be part of our recent Children's Ministry forums. Our conversations were lively and creative and collaborative and I for one have felt very energized by them. In 3 John 1:4 it says:
4 I have no greater joy than this, to hear that my children are walking in the truth. (NRSV)
This verse speaks collectively to all of God's children whether young or old. But for me, it helps me to focus on what I think is at the core of why ministry with our children and youth is so important to us here at Lord of Life. It's about helping them, and by extension all of the rest of us, to know what it means to walk in the truth of Jesus Christ; to know who this Jesus is and for that to make a difference in their lives in all they say and do.
The next step in our planning process will be for several of us who attended the forums to get together on Tuesday, March 10 at 6:00 PM to take the next steps in making our conversations reality. I anxiously await that opportunity and I would ask all of you to keep this process and those of us who are part of it in your thoughts and prayers. You will be seeing the results of that work over the next weeks and months.
One last thought I wanted to share with you is that there seems to be a groundswell these days surrounding the idea of changing our worship service schedule on Sunday mornings to allow for study and fellowship time between the services. This idea has been expressed a number of times over the last year or so by a good number of people and was a common theme during our children's ministry conversations. So here's your chance to share your thoughts. I have created a survey on our Faith Formation web site and would love to hear from you. Please let me know what you think about the idea of changing things up on Sunday morning. Simply click on the link below and take the survey. Peace - Pastor Sue = )

Meet Your Council Members
|
Many people don't know who the council members are at Lord of Life, so we are having a series for the next several months on each of the members and a short bio on them. Our first one is the President of Council - Barbara Wagner.
Barbara has been a member of LOL for 13 years - she lives in Leisuretowne and has 2 children, Jamie and Jeff, and 4 grandchildren, all who live in Medford. Over the years Barbara has been involved in many activities at LOL. She is enjoying the activities of the PEP group, and the Women's ministry and attends the Women's study. She is working with the quilting group, has been on the Senior Hi Mission trips, is in charge of our lovely Memorial Gardens, serves on the Altar Guild and also a communion assistant. She sets up the schedule for the ushers every week for all 3 services and does the same for altar guild. She painted all the murals in the FDC (with help from Sheri Perkins). This will be her last year as President on council. She has served for 3 years now (plus served several years ago as secretary of Council). She is always available to talk with you with any concerns you may have about the church.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the last "Helping Hands" sandwich making for the Christian Caring Center! In addition to your donations, this time some of the supplies were donated through a "Thrivent Action Team" project. Please note that ANY Thrivent member may sponsor an 'action team' (and we have a LONG list of projects to be funded!). For more information on this please contact 'lifelines@lordlife.us' and we will get you started!

Thank you to everyone who participated in our impromptu collection of casseroles for the Christian Caring Center's Code Blue Shelter. We asked at Bunco on Friday night and Betty M. sent out an email to the Women's ministry email chain. By Monday morning, our master chefs had cooked up 30 casseroles. These were not the small pans but large tins full of great dishes. We took the casseroles along with the Helping Hands folks who made their regular 300 sandwiches (this too is over the top). We also collected other goodies such as muffins, brownies, bagels, and a bunch of canned goods. I know there are many others who would have helped if you had known about it, but do not dismay. We were extremely successful and will be doing it again next month. The shelter will be supporting these folks as long as it is cold. The need is there and if we can help, it will be appreciated. Lord of Life's generosity continues to be over the top.

The Auxiliary is working on their next big project........Spring Fling which will be held on Saturday, May 16th from 10:00-3:00. Look for more information as we get closer to the date. The auxiliary is looking for donations of gently used items such as toddler toys, women's purses, jewelry, and knick knacks to use on that day. As always, stuffed animals and nail polish continue to be at the top of the list for needed items by the Activities Department.

Praise God for the "Casserole Brigade!" Thanks to your swift responses, our larders are starting to look a bit plumper already [larder is a pantry - old fashioned term!]. The need is ongoing, so please keep up the great work! If the weather reports for the next ten days stay on track with what's playing now, we might have little, if any, gap in Code Blue services.
Even *if* the weather warms up sufficiently to call off Code Blue shelter, we hope that our guests will still stay close by and continue to get shelter and sustenance, so that we can help many folks in need to get into more stable situations.
That means your home-cooked meals will continue to be an important part of our work. Please continue to spread the word, and THANK YOU for your help. When you come to drop off your casseroles, would you please consider leaving your name and contact information so that we can thank you personally? A notification here would be great as well!
Several of you have reached out recently to ask about our current volunteer needs. We have just had to reduce our staff due to funding issues, so we are in need of volunteers with office skills more than ever.
There are two areas where we are hoping to build new teams of volunteers:
1. Case management -- helping guests and clients get connected with needed services. This involves learning how to use a software program called HMIS, which is used by many Burlington County socia l services agencies to connect people and services. It is not difficult to learn, but does require that you have computer and Internet literacy. The ideal volunteers will be able to commit a minimum of one shift per week.
2. Telephone receptionists -- I won't lie to you, folks, this can be the toughest job in the house. The people who become our phone team will form the first point of contact with every possible kind of visitor to the center, from clients in crisis, to donors, to vendors, to other agencies..... We will teach you how to serve the Lord in this vital post. You will learn about all the services we offer as well as how to give some on-the-spot referrals to other services. If you are already experienced in phone work, you'll build new skills into your repertoire. If you are learning phone work for the first time, you will build your resume, gain all kinds of professional confidence, and be a blessing to many in the process! The ideal volunteer will be able to commit at least one shift every other week.
