Thoughts in Print by Pastor Sue

Do you remember the old American Express slogan "Membership has its Privileges"? Basically the idea was that having an American Express card in your wallet was somehow a status symbol unto itself, but in particular there were special services provided to those who carried an AmEx card. Even though AmEx has moved on from this slogan and marketing approach, they clearly were a draw in their day.

I remember during my previous career when I was traveling all over the US and Europe that I racked up enough frequent flyer miles to earn a number of perks, things like being able to move ahead of other people in the security line, taking advantage of the frequent flyer lounge at the airport, and an occasional upgrade to First Class. Being a member of that club became about status and convenience. I have to admit that it was nice while it lasted. Clearly carrying that nice silver frequent flyer card had its privileges.

This idea of membership appeals to the human desire to be comfortable and possibly even set apart from, or even set above, others, not to mention the seemingly endless human desire to think we are getting as much as we can for as little as we can. And ultimately there is little demanded of us in terms of relationship or commitment. After all, it's all about what we can get...

Membership in the family of Christ, and in particular in a community of faith such as Lord of Life, is a little different. First of all there is far more to it than simply carrying a card. As a matter of fact there is no card you can flash to show you're a member. What identifies us and sets us apart as members of this club is how we mirror the one whom we follow; how we reflect the love of Jesus in word and deed. Second, the ultimate privilege we receive as members is the one that Jesus came to bring all those who believe - forgiveness and the promise of eternal life. It's a privilege that we receive a glimpse of it in the here and now, but that can only truly be realized someday in the future. It's something that has the power to transform our lives but that will never make our lives perfect here on earth.

This idea of membership is often anything but comfortable and it can demand a great deal of us in terms of relationship and commitment. It calls us to a daily commitment of heart and soul to the continuing of God's work in the world and to caring for and nurturing each other and serving others. It's about what we've already received in Jesus that inspires us to give without thought to what we might get in return even though, in the end, we receive far more than we give. It's about the privilege of being those who serve on behalf of the one who gave all for us. It's about standing together in the good times, and even the not so good times, proclaiming the perfect love of Jesus Christ.

Lord of Life has over 900 members. And we are being challenged, maybe as never before in our history, to a renewed sense of what it means to be members of this community of faith. I pray that each and every one of us will spend some time as we continue into this new year to re-examine our sense of relationship and commitment to the mission and ministry that we share; to what it means to be a member of Lord of Life. I look forward to sharing this journey with all of you.

6 'No Cost' Ways To Help Your Church

Did you know there are some simple, no-cost ways that you can help support your church ministries in 2015?  Here are a few to consider:

1)  Volunteer to help - There are plenty of opportunities to help for an hour or longer if you are available.  Contact your church council or the pastors or Ministry team leads for a list of suggestions!  Or fill out the 'time & talent' form online to get connected!

2) THRIVENT CHOICE - If you have a Thrivent account, check it now for any available funds that are free to you to direct to any charity (our favorite is Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Tabernacle NJ !).  CLICK HERE for a .pdf tutorial on how to do this.  We recently received a donation of $1024 from Thivent - thanks to YOU!!

3) SHOP ONLINE - If you like to shop online, and would like a 'no-cost' donation to come from your shopping, check one of these organizations!
  • Smile.Amazon.com - by using this link (add 'smile' to Amazon.com) and directing your purchases you will donate 0.5% of every purchase without any cost to you.

  • www.iGive.com - by registering and using this service to purchase online items from hundreds of stores, you could contribute 0.5% or more without any cost to you.

4) Create a Thrivent Action Team - each Thrivent member is able to form 2 'Action Team' grants each year, to which they will donate $250.  The form is easy to fill out, available through your www.Thrivent.com account, and easy!  Some suggested Ministries would be:

  • Helping Hands - meet monthly to make sandwiches for the homeless
  • Bridge of Peace Dinners - Women's ministry organizes dinners in Camden
  • Campaigns for Malaria, World Hunger, Lutheran World Relief
  • Support of Vacation Bible School
  • Support of Junior High Mission Trip and/or Senior High Mission Trips
  • Campaign for Food Pantry support, or to help with Christmas Gift Donations
5) Return your EOS and signup for Simply Giving - to make your giving easier and so the church has a reasonable income estimate.  The EOS can be submitted or updated online at this link.  And the form for Simply Giving is available at this link  (.pdf file).

6) Include the church in your will - this is easily accomplished when creating or updating your will.

IF YOU ARE A THRIVENT MEMBER and would like to help out, please CLICK HERE so we can get more information and help to 'hook you up' with the opportunities for providing extra support for our ministries at no cost to you.  THANKS!

Congregational Meeting  - Part 2

Due to the need to address a number of questions and provide time for discussion, the Jan 25th Congregational Meeting unfortunately extended longer than planned. As a result, we lost our 'quorum' when a number of people left the meeting before the conclusion of the business agenda, and the final votes were unable to be completed.  We have scheduled the completion of this meeting for Sunday Feb 22 at 9:30am.

The remaining items to be voted on include:
   1) Election of the new Church Council for 2015 (and 2016 for 2 year terms)
   2) Approval to use the Building/Capital fund if required to cover shortages during the year.
   3) Election of the Nominating Committee.

Feel free to discuss any of these items with our finance team, your council members, or the pastors prior to the meeting if you need more information.

Please make every effort to attend this meeting in order to help support this important work of our church!

Thanks for your participation and prayers!

Haiti Sewing Academy

I am extremely thankful for all those with a sweet tooth for holiday cookies. Because of you, $400 was raised for the sewing academy in Haiti. Each year between 10 and 14 machines are shipped at a cost of $100 each.   This money will help defray the cost of that shipping.

It is truly a blessing to have such support for this project. The students and I thank you!

=========================================

Dear Church Family,
'How thoughtful and kind you are to bless me as you do.'  We are very grateful for the prayers lifted up for Walter and me.  God is good and without the prayers the medicine is no good by itself.  We take one day at a time and thank God and all who pray each day.
   In Christian love,  The Faucetts
