 Brothers and Sisters...

Hymns of faith have always had the power to inspire and comfort believers in times of challenge, difficulty and grief.  This has been abundantly clear to me whenever I have led or attended a funeral or memorial service.  It was true once again this past week when we gathered together to celebrate the life and witness of one of our long-time members...Kaye Zippilli.

In preparation for her final service of worship, Kaye had selected texts of scripture to be read and three of her favorite hymns to be sung.  Her family and friends sang the words, "I fear no foe, with thee at hand to bless; ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.  Where is death's sting?  Where, grave. thy victory?  I triumph still, if thou abide with me!" from "Abide with Me".  After the lessons were read, we sang, "When the darkness appears and the night draws near, and the day is past and gone, at the river I stand, guide my feet, hold my hand.  Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home." from "Precious Lord, Take My Hand".  In our our sending song, we raised our voices and repeated the refrain, "And he will raise you up on eagle's wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of his hand." from "On Eagle's Wings".

Each of these hymns of faith brought us closer to the church's understanding of what it means to be a child of God...abiding with the Lord in this life until he leads us home and we rest in the palm of his hand.  Kaye claimed these truths for herself.  As these songs were voiced, I sensed a fellowship growing among those in the room; even in the midst of this sad / glad occasion.  Through prayers, words of scripture, creed, holy communion and hymns, God was providing hope and healing for this community of faith.  Truly something worth singing about at a time like this!

Years ago, Fred Wilfrid shared a newsletter article with me which had been written by his son, Pastor Dan Wilfrid.  At the time, Dan was serving Grace Lutheran Church in Mendam, New Jersey.  It was the Epiphany season and Dan was revealing why he loved to sing in church.  Here's a portion of what he wrote...

"I sing because I like to.  I sing because I grew up learning that Christianity is a faith to be sung.  If we work at it, we can learn to speak of our faith.  If we try, we can write about what it means for us to be a Christian.  But to me, nothing gets the Gospel message across better than music, better than singing it.  We talk about our hope of eternal life, but nothing can compare to singing "The Strife Is O'er, the Battle Done" at a funeral service.  There is nothing like singing resurrection hope defiantly in the face of death with tears in your eyes and a lump in your throat.  Not all anthems go well.  Not all hymns are easy for congregations to sing.  It's work for new members to learn to sing our liturgy.  But Christianity is a faith to be sung.  Nothing communicates the Gospel quite effectively as a song."

"This Epiphany season, we are called to sing of the light that Christ brought to the world.  We are called to sing that light in the darkness of a world that is often at war.  We are called to sing songs of God manifest in human existence to a community that faces economic uncertainty and fear.  We must sing this season of our faith in Christ, of our vision of a world made new, of a world ruled by the Prince of Peace.  We must sing of hope to a world caught up in despair."

I couldn't have sung it, I mean said it, any better.  So sisters and brothers, let us sing with Kaye, Dan, and all the faithful of the God of Love and Light and Life!

Your Brother in Christ,    Pastor Jones

From the Church Council President

Is This YO_ _   CH_ _CH?

You look at the above title and you think, "Boy someone really goofed and didn't proof read this article".  But look at it again -- what's missing??  UR (you are).

Is this really your church???  Where do you fit in?? Are you doing your part to keep things running?  Are you a greeter, usher, communion assistant, on altar guild, sing in the choir, play an instrument, teach Sunday school, teach confirmation class, help at VBS, coordinate the mission trips, help or attend the PEP group?  If not --why not??  Or do you just come for the service and leave and not think about what it takes or how many people it takes to keep our beautiful church doing all it is doing.

Listed above are only a few of the ministries that you can be involved in.  Make it your resolution for the new year of 2015 to become involved at Lord of Life.  It takes U----U--- and U to keep our church functioning.  We need everyone's talents to thrive.  No amount of help is too small!

So think about where YOU fit in and volunteer where you feel your talents are.  Contact Lu Hourihan-Lu@lordlife.us, 856-988-2089-or the church office, 609-268-0262, and someone will be in touch! We really do need YOU!!!!!

Children's Ministry

YOU'RE INVITED! To a conversation about Children's Ministry at Lord of Life. During the second week of February, Pastor Sue will be hosting two different opportunities to begin a conversation about how we can re-energize our Children's ministry. We hope to see you at ONE of the following opportunities:

  • Sunday, 2/8 at 11:15AM (immediately following worship)
  • Thursday, 2/12 at 7:00PM

YOUR thoughts and ideas are vitally important to this conversation. See you there!

Upcoming Trip to Haiti

On February 16th, I will be taking my 7th trip to Haiti. I will be staying in the dormitory at the clinic in Mariani. While there I will work with patients at the clinic and may travel to another clinic in Tricon, but that has not yet been confirmed. I have noticed each year that the people I have seen in Mariani, appear to be healthier compared to my first trip. A primary reason for this is that the clinic is now open every day as opposed to 3 or 4 days a week. More people are able to be seen. But whichever clinic I work from, I will be helping the very poor who have no money for the expensive medical care in Haiti.

I will meet with Libertin, the administrator of the sewing school. I will review the reports that he keeps and share some new ideas to improve the school. I hope to investigate some sources where items that the students make could be sold. The long term plan is to have this school be self sufficient.

Usually I get some time to visit an orphanage or two and play with the children. It amazes me how happy they are when they have so little and how glad they are to see me. This year I gave a treadle machine to each orphanage to enable the caregivers of these children a way to keep up on the mending that 50 plus children can produce. I will give them more thread and buttons.

I also shipped a basketball court to Haiti for Christmas specifically for Madame Rhodes Orphanage. Thirty one boys live there and although soccer is the favorite sport in Haiti, I thought they might like to learn how to shoot baskets. I am hoping that it has arrived so that I can see if they are enjoying it and get some pictures.

I will take some sidewalk chalk as the girls really like hopscotch. I will take some jacks, hair ties, tennis balls, and of course the favorite of the little boys, Matchbox cars. The loving smiles of these children are hard to describe, but they sure make you feel good.

While gone, I ask that you keep me and the Haitian people in your prayers. I want them to feel the love I bring them from the people at Lord of Life.

     - Penny Miller

THANK YOU!!

Social Ministry

Our change jar ministry is beginning to fill up. Thank you to everyone and please keep it coming. The proceeds of the jar will go to the Penny Miller Sewing academy to help defray the cost of shipping supplies and sewing machines to Haiti.

The social ministry committee will meet on February 2, at 6:30 p.m. to continue the planning for the upcoming year. We encourage everyone to come out and assist us in the planning process. We are doing some fun and exciting things and the more who get involved will help us make it a bigger success!

Confirmation Ministry Update

Confirmation learning sessions are ongoing. Please note that learning sessions continue until 11:30. Parents are requested to remain in the Narthex or the Sanctuary until classes are dismissed.   Thank you for encouraging your children in their learning and being such an important part of their faith development.

We had a great retreat on Martin Luther King Day! Following a video, Linda Jagiela captured the attention of all by sharing her vast knowledge and the fascinating history of Dr. Still and his family.  Everyone joyfully departed LOL with rakes and gloves to tackle the yard work for the day of service at the Still Center on Church Road in Medford, looking forward to meeting descendants of Dr. Still.

In the afternoon, Chuck Bubeck shared his and Fran's personal experiences as part of a Bosnian mission trip and Synod guests Cindy and Don Henry , members of St. Paul's in Hainesport, shared information on many of the trips and on the Synod's Peace Puppet ministry. Tote bags were creatively decorated by the Confirmation attendees and will be distributed to the children of Bosnia on the upcoming 2015 trip.  Thanks to all of our students, parents, and guests who made this a wonderful learning and serving event!

The Souper Bowl Chili cook-off will be January 31st beginning at 2 pm.

The youth from Bridge of Peace will be joining us once again for a fun-filled agenda! There will be opportunities to help cook chili, to decorate the Narthex, to play minute to win-it games together, and to help lead the 6 pm service in conclusion of the events of the day. Parents and family members are invited to join the fun at 5 pm to enjoy the chili and to attend worship at 6pm. All proceeds from the event will go to support the food pantries of Bridge of Peace and Shawnee and Seneca High Schools. This event is both a service and an enrichment opportunity!
