Thoughts in Print from Pastor Sue
|
By now most of you have rid yourselves of the Christmas decorations and the tree and the wreaths and the lights are nothing but a memory until next Christmas rolls around. I suppose at this point that's probably appropriate since even the "Twelve Days of Christmas" have come to an end. But just because the trappings of the season have been put away doesn't mean that the hope and love and joy and peace that the seasons of Advent and Christmas bring need to be put away as well.
As a matter of fact, if you have a nativity set, I hope it's still out somewhere prominent. Because the seasons of Advent and Christmas give way to another season of importance in the story of our Lord and Savior Jesus. You see this last Tuesday, Jan. 6th, was the day of Epiphany, the day we celebrate the arrival of the Wise Men, the Magi, and their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, at the home of Mary, Joseph, and a very young Jesus. This is the time to place the Wise Men in the nativity scene and remember why it is that we even give gifts on Christmas; in imitation of the Wise Men and their gifts to Jesus.
Just as the Wise Men were on a journey, we too are on a journey during this season after Epiphany; a journey that challenges us to seek this Jesus again for ourselves as if for the first time. The season begins with the visit of the Wise Men but takes us all the way to Ash Wednesday, passing through Jesus' baptism this weekend and His Transfiguration on the last Sunday before Lent begins. It is a time for us to remember that Jesus came in light, was named and claimed by His heavenly Father in the waters of the Jordan and then again at the Transfiguration in the presence of some of His disciples.
In a way, celebrating Christmas means celebrating God's gift to us, while celebrating Epiphany means celebrating what it means to be on a journey to offer gifts, the gift of ourselves, to Him. It is a season of light in which we are reminded to search for this newborn king again in our lives and to reflect on what we have to offer in response to what has been given to us. And the greatest gift we can offer is just to tell His story, to share His light and love with others.
May this season of Epiphany fill you once again with the light and warmth of the eternal love and grace of God in Jesus Christ. And in closing let me share with all of you the Prayer of the Day for Epiphany. I hope you will pray and reflect on this prayer as you take your journey during this season of light.
Peace - Pastor Sue
O God, on this day you revealed your Son to the nations by the leading of a star. Lead us now by faith to know your presence in our lives, and bring us at last to the full vision of your glory, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen!

From the Finance Team:
In 2014, the church received (in addition to regular giving):
==> $8,593.77 from the sale of the Solar Panel SRECs (we receive these monies based on the solar power we produce; these are then sold in the open market)
==> $4,655 from Thrivent Choice Dollars (Anyone with a Thrivent account who has these funds can direct them to the church, at no cost to the individual)
==> $106.69 From Amazon Smile shopping (shopping at smile.amazon.com and directing the 'free' 1/2% donations to our church at no cost to the individual)
==> $25.75 from Igive donations (using the igive website to direct donations to our church, again with no cost to the individual)
Thanks for supporting these efforts!

Starting in January and running through the end of March, our social ministry team is asking members of Lord of Life to dump their spare change into a water jug in the Narthex. Proceeds from these collections will assist in defraying the costs of the Penny Miller Sewing Academy in Haiti.
About the Sewing Academy:
The sewing academy is an opportunity to change a life in Haiti. School is expensive for the average Haitian and there is no assistance from the government for education. However the people are eager to learn, especially a trade where they can earn enough to feed themselves and their families, as daily survival is their focus.
Once enrolled, the students attend sewing classes twice a week for a year. They are taught by Madame Francois who assesses their abilities and divides the students accordingly. At the end of a year graduation is held and family and friends are invited to attend, refreshments are served and each student is given a treadle sewing machine to keep as their own. They now have the knowledge, training, and equipment to earn a living and possibly start a small business.
The cost to operate the school for a year is approximately $6000. The teacher earns $75 US a month. The administrator earns $80 US a month. A gentleman in Delaware supplies us with treadle sewing machines at a cost of $75 each. Shipping costs $100 a box. One machine and some boxes of fabric fill a box. We send 12 to 14 sewing machines each year. Fabric and notions are donated but are not always appropriate for the climate in Haiti, where it is warm all year. Additional fabric is purchased and shipped. The yearly rent for the school building is $1800 a year. The school has been operating successfully for 4 years.
Cookie Tray Sale:
The cookie tray sale was a huge success with $400 raised by the Women's ministry for the Penny Miller Haiti Sewing Academy. We had a tremendous outpouring and variety of cookies donated by the women of LOL. Thank you to everyone who ordered and purchased trays, baked cookies and prepared the trays!

New ADULT BIBLE STUDY
Wednesdays, from 10:00-11:30
"Baptized, We Live - Lutheranism as a Way of Life"
Start off the new year with a new venture. What is Lutheran Christianity? This study answers the question in a manner which avoids defining Lutheranism as primarily a system of doctrines. Instead, the text, images, and video focus on Lutheranism as "A Way of Seeing, Hearing, Teaching and Following." If you've never been part of a study, have been for years, or anything in between, please know all are welcome! All questions are valid and relationships are built as we learn and share together. No experience necessary!
PEP "FESTIVAL ITALIANO LUNCHEON" FRIDAY, JANUARY 16TH, Noon
Join us as we begin our new year Italian style! Whether you're Italian or not, everyone will be on the 16th! Special food, music, a little history, and lots of good fellowship and laughter are always part of our time together.
OUT TO LUNCH AT THE EVERGREEN DAIRY BAR
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21st, Noon
While the temperature outside may be freezing, it's always a good time for ice cream, with a bit of lunch beforehand!
THANK YOU
...to all of our angels who helped to share the joy of the Christmas and Epiphany seasons with our friends at Lutheran Crossings, with special thanks to the Celebration Ringers
Check out pictures of some of our events on the link to the website!

Just a quick reminder that Confirmation Learning sessions started Sunday, Jan. 4th. Look for further information in the near future on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day retreat and the Chili Cook-Off. For Confirmation youth who missed learning sessions in the fall, there will be an opportunity for make-up work posted on the Faith Formation web site during the first week of January.
