Thoughts in Print - from Pastor Sue
|
When I was much, much, younger, my mom was an "Avon Lady". And I can remember actually teasing her a little about it from time to time. There were always boxes and bags being sorted and packed for all the folks she had orders for and frequently there would be new things appearing in our house because she would get a discount or a sales award of some kind.
One of those things that appeared over time in our house and came out this time of year was a nativity set. It was made of white porcelain and had a wooden stable. I remember that nativity would find its way to the top of the piano most of the time because it was about the only safe place for it. You see, in a house with six kids and their associated friends and a dog or cat or two, there really weren't too many places where anything breakable had a fighting chance.
When my mom passed away more than twenty years ago, that nativity ended up packed in the things that I claimed when my siblings and I took on the sad job of dividing her worldly possessions. That nativity has moved many times since it became mine. And it has been forgotten more years than I can count. But in the last few years it has found its way into the lives of lots of people - all of you as a matter of fact.
My mom's nativity is the one that you will see growing before your very eyes on the altar at church through Advent and Christmas. And every time I look at it on our altar I remember it sitting on the piano in our house so many years ago. I remember the singing and the laughter and the Advent devotions we did together at that piano as my mom would play and we would sing carols and light the candles on the Advent wreath. And I especially remember the unique looking stable. A stable without walls. One that invites people in to see what will take place there; who will fill the space.
As we placed that stable on the altar this last weekend, even though I know who will come and what will take place there, the season of Advent never ceases to fill me with hope and love and joy and peace. That stable is inviting us in. It is inviting us to make room in our hearts and minds for a baby born in the most humble of circumstances to touch our lives once again as if for the first time. I invite each and every one of you to take that journey with me.
Come and see!

There are still several tags on the Giving Tree. Please put a smile on a child's face this Christmas by taking a tag or as many as you would like. All of the gifts will be taken to the Christian Caring Center in Browns Mills where families in need are able to "shop" for their children. Please have all unwrapped gifts to the church NO LATER than Sunday - December 14th. Thank you for your tremendous support of this ministry every year.

God Rods
Hello? Is anyone out there with an interest in leading or performing in the God Rods? Everyone has been blessed, inspired, and yes, shed a few tears, during past performances at our Christmas and Easter worship services. The God Rods youth team has interpreted and brought to life contemporary Christian music as beautiful moving art using dowel rods! Are any past members home from college and want to again be a part? High school members interested? Thanks to all who have been a part of this incredibly moving performance team in the past and those who would like to see it continue. Please let Pastor Sue know of your interest as soon as possible.
================================
We are seeking members to serve as Worship Assistants for the 6 pm and 8:30 am services and as Altar Guild (set up communion and altar and clean up after service - scheduled rotationally) and Communion Assistants (serving congregants wine from tray or common cup) for the 6 pm service. Qualifications required: Love for the Lord and a grateful heart. Prior experience not necessary as training will be provided.
=====================
Also always looking for someone with ability to click a mouse to help run the AV during the services. Full training is of course available! We have many openings at the 6pm Sat, 8:30am Sun and 10am Sun services to fit your schedule!

The Social Ministry Committee met last month to begin planning for 2015. Social ministry encompasses all of the outreach we do at LOL which is pretty incredible. We will be putting together a booklet describing the various projects and ministries we support as well as a calendar to help everyone plan. We will be starting the year with a change drive which will benefit the Penny Miller Sewing Academy in Haiti. From January through March there will be a container in the narthex to collect Pennies for Penny to help defray the cost of keeping this school active and growing. We will be holding a meeting on December 9th at 7 pm to continue the planning we are doing for 2015. Everyone is welcome to attend and give their thoughts and input on the projects we will be working on during the coming year.

Please return EOS (Estimate of Sharing) cards for 2015
 MANY THANKS to everyone who has been able to return their EOS cards for 2015 - we have about 1/2 of the families returning their cards so far. These are important for our 2015 planning; even if you cannot make a commitment now please return with that indication, so we know where we stand.
EOS cards (available in the Narthex) can be put in the box at church, at the office, in the offering plate, or just enter online at our website www.lordlife.us ("This Week" page)
If you are using Simply Giving in 2015 and if you made a change of any kind, a NEW Simply Giving form must be received by the church in order for the change to be implemented (these can be printed from the website or are on bulletin board outside the church office).
THANK TO EVERYONE for your support of the Ministries of your church!

Well December came upon us very quickly!!! The Grace Place is so excited to be practicing for the Christmas play. The children will be ready with costumes, song, and cheer. The play is December 19th at 6:30. Hope to see everyone there!
|
Many thanks for your continued support and generosity throughout 2014, and especially recently. There were many wonderful items that have been donated in the last few weeks that will be placed in the upcoming Holiday Shoppe for the residents to choose from (for free) as gifts for their family members. I'm still collecting 2015 calendars and greeting cards for the residents. And, as usual, there is an on-going need for nail polish, polish remover, cotton balls, candy bars for Candy Bar Bingo, and stuffed animals of all sizes.
