From the desk of Pastor Dave
|
In the Apostle Paul's letter to Philemon he writes, "Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, to Philemon our dear friend and CO-WORKER, to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ." (Philemon 1: 1-3 NRSV)
Brothers and Sisters...
This past week, associates in ministry, diaconal ministers and clergy gathered in Hightstown, New Jersey for a Bishop's Convocation. This is a time for CO-WORKERS in the ministry of the gospel to focus on issues of concern for the Church as they spend time together around worship, presentations, meals and conversation. Our speaker for the event was Dr. Rollie Martinson whose topic was "Ministry Across the Generations: From Infancy through Elderhood". With his guidance, we explored the challenge of being "faithful to our calling" at a time when there are six different generations of people under one roof in the American church.
I found the presentation helpful. But just as helpful was the opportunity I had to talk briefly with numerous ministerial colleagues about their own situations; especially the marvelous ways God is sustaining and partnering with them and their congregations....using their hands to get His divine work done!
+ Pastor Janet Blair eagerly shared the work her congregation (Zion Lutheran Church in Ridgefield) is doing with the Korean American community through an English as a Second Language (ESL) Bible Study in a new multicultural ministry with the name...Morning Star.
+ Pastor Karen Bernhardt spoke lovingly of a monthly ecumenical women's worship experience she has been leading for 2 years entitled "Cross and Crumbs" which this past summer added a mission trip component that found the sisters in Christ serving in Washington, D.C.
+ Pastor Carmine Pernini revealed the struggles of being a new pastor in a congregation (Zion Lutheran Church in Rahway) that has been unable to worship in their sanctuary over the last 6 months because of severe structural challenges.
+ Pastor Beth Orling, visiting from Washington state, told the story of a joint ministry that she and her husband, Pastor Bob Zimmerman, are leading in "Marriage Enrichment" with a retreat scheduled with Holy trinity Lutheran Church in Manasquan at Camp Crossroads in January.
+ Assistant to the Bishop Jason Reed fielded my questions about a youth led "Peace Puppet Ministry" that will share its witness this summer at the National Youth Gathering in Detroit, Michigan and throughout the synod beforehand.
+ Pastor Andy Gordon invited us to become more engaged in a chaplaincy program at Medford Leas that will provide an ecumenical witness to the residents and workers at this nearby continuing care community.
+ Pastor Gary Stiegler puzzled over how his congregation (Lutheran Church of the redeemer in Vineland) might respond to the receipt of two million dollars from the sale of Luther Acres; formerly owned and managed by his congregation as they consider future ministry possibilities.
+ Pastor Gary Woodruff, both a little frustrated and greatly excited about his first call to serve Atonement Lutheran Church in Asbury Park, strategized about ways to cultivate opportunities for mission and ministry among youth in his church...down at the shore.
+ Soon-to-be Pastor Ryan Paetzold pondered new options for several of the ELCA congregations along the Route 30 corridor in Camden County as he does the work of pastoral care for Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Audubon in the wake of their former Interim Pastor Ed Schmidt's death and in the hope of a more dynamic future ministry.

|
Indeed, as Pastor Aaron Richter proclaimed this past weekend. "God is doing something here!"...in His church. And Lord of Life is not alone in understanding that it is "God's Work - Our Hands!". Thousands of sisters and brothers in Christ are being "Spirit Fed and Spirit Led" as we act as CO-WORKERS in the gospel ministry.
Your Brother in CHRIST, Pastor David Jones

Oh What a Night!
On Friday night Team 345 evaluated scarecrows in downtown Medford and then met in the Fellowship Hall to continue activities. Marlise Patterson explained and displayed artistic pumpkin carving (by herself and daughter Marie) to the group and carved a new pumpkin to reflect the devotional by Pastor Jones. Pumpkin creations were on display inside the vestibule for all to enjoy over the weekend. Also during the evening the children decorated gourds for Halloween to take home with them. The gourds were donated by Linda Baechler and paints and yarn were donated by Carolyn Cuviello. About two dozen attendees (children and parents) also enjoyed a flashlight led introduction to the meditation walk by Pastor Jones. Thank you to everyone who helped make this Team 345 event a wonderful night.
Blessings, Lu Hourihan
